Problems/Glitches with Writable CD-ROMs and Mastering Software
- The combination of PC, Win95, CD-Writer and mastering software can be
quite finicky to use.
- Resulting in anywhere from 0 to 100% failure rate to burn CD.
- Personally have probably averaged overall 40% to 60% (wing and prayer no help)
- When making upgrades that have added large amounts of files, CD-writer
tends to fail. At approx $10 each failed CD, can easily lead to a world of pain
before the problem is solved.
- Need a good complete setup that is supported by the vendor. Though even
this might be out of the vendor's control as the software and hardware
available does not seem to be a 100% there when dealing with large file
and directory structures. (>15,000 files and convoluted that go outside
the bounds of what the system normally likes).
- Error messages like Can't mount '(' or Buffer overruns
(despite adequate hard-disk speed) that give no indication of the
source of the problem are not much help.
- Problems can be SCSI cable too long, buggy software, CD-Writer
design faults, incompatible IDE CD-ROM, disk fragmentation, incompatible SCSI cards,
and devices, too many files, too many sub-directories, CD mastering
software does not like too many files combined with too many sub-directories
combined with going over 600 Meg.
- Fixed by using a PC exclusively for the CDR with it's own SCSI
card, updating software and going to a different brand of CD-Writer
recommended by a colleague.
