APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR BURSARIES FOR BSR 2007

Applications are now open for bursaries to support delegates attending the 9th International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation (BSR 2007), which will take place 13-17 August 2007, at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, UK (www.bsr2007.com). The bursaries will provide grants for travel and accommodation and will be awarded to applicants in two categories: young scientists including post doctoral fellows and new lecturers from any country including UK; and delegates from less economically developed countries (LEDCs) or member countries of SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East).

The bursaries have been made available through sponsorship from The Canon Foundation, the International Union of Crystallography and the Wellcome Trust. Travel grants of up to US$500 will be available for applicants from countries such as China, India, Pakistan and Brazil; $300 for the Middle East, Europe and Russia; and $100 for theUK. The bursaries will also contribute towards the registration fee and accommodation during the four day conference. The deadline for bursary applications is 15th May 2007.

"This conference offers the opportunity to meet and hear from the world’s leading researchers in structural biology, structure-based drug design, and computational biology and we are delighted to be able to make the event accessible to researchers and students from all over the world, through the award of these bursaries,” said Professor Samar Hasnain and Dame Louise Johnson, the Conference Chairs and Senior Scientist at Daresbury Laboratory and Life Science Director at DIAMOND, respectively.

The 9th International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation will bring together the world’s leading authorities in the biological applications of synchrotron radiation for a 4 day programme which includes lectures by leading academics: Nobel Laureates Professor Johann Deisenhofer and Hartmut Michel; Professor Janos Hajdu based in Sweden at Uppsala Universitet; and from Japan, Professor Shigeyuki Yokoyama, RIKEN Genomic Sciences Centre.
