Hi,
I've heard of PSD's that have to be filled once in a while, but the one
I use (linear 50mm from Braun) works with a constant flow of gas.
Gas consumption can be as low as you can possibly set it. I routinely
operate at 0.1 liters per hour (half a division at my flow gauge) and a
standard size bottle serves me half a year. Filling it costs around $100.
I can think of two situations when burning the PSD wire is possible:
1. Exposure to the direct beam - therefore you must set a beam-stop
2. Placing a strongly reflecting single crystal (like silicon) in the
sample position and driving it (and the detector) to the right angle.
Most students I have worked with have neither enough knowledge nor
enough imagination to do the trick.
Of course the PSD controls and in particular the HV potentiometer must
be well secured - a thick steel plate and a couple of ordinary (not
digital) locks will do the trick.
