Yes, you would see more counts. We also have a Stoe cap. geom set up, but Stoe
have done away with the scinti counter because of too small a count rate due to
the Ge primary monochromator. The easy, neat, but probably not cheap answer is
to fit their straight wire 6deg PSD. One looses marginally in resolution
(eg FWHM 0.11 cf 0.07), but you gain so much in counts that it's easily worth it.
Filling the beam path with helium is going to be a tricky fiddly affair - worth
doing as a one off if you have the time. I'd be interested in the results!
