Just one counter-example : RASMOL is a very used software, the
source of which is distributed freely. I have not heard about multiple
versions. Another one maybe : seems to me that the GSAS source
was distributed with the VAX VMS version, and there is still one
unique GSAS (if I am not wrong).

Yes and one can create VRML objects with a text editor, no
problem. Nevertheless, a good freeware is welcome :-). Is the
commercial xtal-3d release ready ?
