There are several things that people can do to reduce unwanted messages.

* Make sure your return email address is valid before you subscribe.
I routinely remove subscribers whose email address generates errors
(but can't catch them all). If this happens to you, simply resubscribe
(after checking your return email address eg by sending a message to
yourself) by sending "SUB Rietveld_l" (_l for list) to <listserv@ill.fr>

* Sign off by sending "SIG Rietveld_l" before you activate auto email
answering systems, or configure them not to auto-answer to the list.

* Address personal messages to individual subscribers, not to the whole
list eg if a given ftp address does not work, everyone should not complain
to the whole list. And of course, check ftp/http addresses before posting.

* Don't repeat verbatim earlier messages, just enough for people to
make the connection - they already have the earlier message.

You will still receive some unwanted messages, but that is the price
to pay for using a mail list instead of an internet newsgroup. Just
hit the delete key :-)
