He's probably keeping his head down and adopting a low profile :-

...
This is no a dignified way of using the mailing list and has
nothing to do with science. You are somehow indicating that we are
not confident of our position. We are VERY CONFIDENT INDEED. As
yet we have a limited number of papers in the literature and we
will stand by our publications both present and future.

For the benefit of the mailing list, Alan was present in December
1997 at an ESRF workshop at which I spoke on these very topics. I
presented our scientific case and work in hand. The talk was
received well as *high* profile work. Solving torsionally flexible
molecules with large number of non-hydrogen atoms is a serious
scientific goal.

We have been drawn in a discussion earlier than we would have
wanted but for those of you who wish to check the veracity of our
work you should contact Andy Fitch at the ESRF who was the
instrument scientist when we did the ESRF work in October or
perhaps Tony Cheetham, Dave Cox, Lynne McCusker, Christian
Baerlocher, Henk Schenk, Hartmut Fuess or Bob Cernik - I could go
on... who were all present at the Workshop.

Polemics and insinuations are not the way to conduct a scientific
discussion. Now, if you will excuse me I shall get down to writing
some papers!!!

Best wishes

Bill
