vacancy in our Division - full details follow:-

As one of Australia's leading research facilities, CSIRO Minerals seeks an
X-ray diffraction services officer to manage the safe and timely delivery of
X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) services to internal research project staff.

The role involves:-

· Maintenance of equipment and associated sample preparation facilities

· Providing technical advice and training to users

· Developing XRPD 'best practice' guidelines for XRPD facilities at other
CSIRO Minerals sites

· Providing a consultancy service to external clients, as required, with
particular emphasis on phase identification and quantification

The successful applicant will possess a sound knowledge in the latest XRPD
technology developments and possess significant experience in the collection
and analysis of XRPD data.

A strong interest in the application and development of full profile
(Rietveld) XRPD data analysis techniques in complex mineralogical problems
is crucial. Similarly,applicants should possess a primary degree in
chemistry, physics or metallurgy with a strong focus on crystallography,
structural chemistry and/or mineralogy.

FUNCTIONAL AREA: RESEARCH PROJECTS

LOCATION: MELBOURNE

TENURE: INDEFINITE

LINE MANAGER: IAN MADSEN - PROJECT LEADER

JOB DESCRIPTION

The XRD support person will be a member of both the Research Resources Team
(60%) and the Mineral Phase Analysis Team (40%). Technical direction and
training will be provided by the Mineral Phase Analysis Project Leader - Ian
Madsen.

The duties are to:

1. Manage the safe and timely delivery of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD)
services to internal research project staff through provision of a booking
service for access to general purpose equipment, maintenance of that
equipment and associated sample preparation facilities.

2. Provide technical guidance and training to users in XRPD equipment
operation and data interpretation.

3. Keep abreast of the latest developments in XRPD technology for
recommendation of equipment purchases.

4. Provide leadership in XRPD 'best practice' to the XRPD equipment
facilities at other sites within the Division.

5. Keep reference data and analysis software up to date and distributed
across the Division's sites.

6. Provide a consultancy service to external clients, as required, with
particular emphasis on phase identification and quantification.

7. Contribute research input to the Mineral Phase Analysis project in
accordance with its aims and goals through the application of up to date
powder diffraction techniques.

SELECTION CRITERIA
--------------------

Essential

1. A primary degree (minimum) in chemistry, physics or metallurgy with a
strong focus on crystallography, structural chemistry and/or mineralogy.

2. Experience in the collection and analysis of XRPD data.

3. A strong interest in the application and development of sophisticated
XRPD instrumentation.

4. A strong interest in the application and development of full profile
(Rietveld) XRPD data analysis techniques in complex mineralogical problems.

5. Strong PC skills, particularly in data collection from modern
instrumentation, the presentation of graphical data and maintenance of
databases.

6. A thirst for knowledge and an enthusiasm for working as part of a team.

Desirable

1. Demonstrated innovation ability in a research environment.

2. Experience in managing an X-ray laboratory.

3. Desire and ability to move quickly to a role of leading the delivery of
XRPD services across the Division.

4. Experience in computer programming, preferably C++ or FORTRAN.

XRD FACILITIES WITHIN CSIRO MINERALS

At the Clayton laboratories

1. Two Philips X'Pert PW3020/PW3710 system with 42 position sample changer
with an additional PW3020 goniometer fitted with a high temperature camera.

2. A Phillips PW1050/PW1710/PW1730 system with 42 position sample changer

3. Three data logging PC's plus three data analysis PC's with colour printers.

4. A Phillips PW1050/PW1710/ENRAF system configured with an incident beam
monochromator for single wavelength patterns.

5. An INEL CPS120 Position Sensitive Detector with sample holders for
capillary, flat plate and transmission modes.

6. A range of single crystal equipment, including Weissenberg and Precession
cameras as well as an automated single crystal diffractometer.

At the Perth laboratory

1. A Phillips X'Pert PW3020/PW3710 system with 42 position sample changer.

2. One data logging PC plus one data analysis PC.
