solving intergrowth defects

Hi, all.

I have been trying to solve a
powder XRD pattern with a considerable
amount of intergrowth defects.
The method I am trying is to
just simply let an atom be replaced
by another atom with a different scattering
factor.
Does anybody have experience in solving profiles
with intergrowth defects? I would like to know
any papers published or the reliability of such
a method.

Thanx in advance,
