I agree, perfection is not in that world. However, I would not say
NOT reliable, I would say only slightly imperfect.

And about imperfection, it is also the case of many primary beam
monochromators... If you look at the Kalpha-1 CeO2 pattern
proposed by Ian Langford for the Size-Strain Round Robin, you will
find a residue of 1.5% of Kalpha-2 ;-)). Let me add that nobody
proposed a transmission powder pattern for this compound, but
this is another story.

Which imperfection is the worst is a matter of personal choice.

About the primary beam monochromator extra cost, it can be also
considered as a big problem in several countries.

Manufacturers propose now versatile machines. So that if you
find one which allow to change fast the geometry without any need
for recalibration, buy it !
