[sdpd] Problems running Crysfire under WinME (2)

Further to my posting yesterday, I now have further details of the
difficulties reported by Hassan Zahedi-Niaki in Quebec

1) His problem refers to WinME not Win2000.

2) He reports that it is confined to TREOR, and doesn't affect ITO,
DICVOL, KOHL or TAUP.

The behaviour of FJZN6, LZON and LOSH has not been checked, but in my
opinion they are less likely to be affected, since, like KOHL and TAUP,
these were all compiled by me under MSF77. By contrast, the version of
TREOR90 in Crysfire is Per-Eric Werner's original EXE distribution.

3) He reports that TREOR90 hangs his system consistently for any dataset.

4) He has 556K available for running EXEs, so this is probably not an
execution memory limit problem, as the size of Werner's TREOR90 EXE is
under 200K.

However, TREOR90 might perhaps try to use extended memory for its arrays
and fall foul of WinME in that way, but as I didn't compile it, I have no
information regarding that possibility.

5) Apparently WinME doesn't support CONFIG.SYS properly, so might not
provide enough environment space, but I don't think that can be the
explanation here, since it would affect other indexing programs and
anyway the symptoms would be different.

6) I seem to remember reading that WinME still allows one to boot from
its boot menu to a separate DOS environment with comes closer to having
proper DOS support, as distinct from the more restricted environment
that it provides in a DOS box under Windows. If correct, this could be
the answer.

Can anyone confirm point 6, or throw further light on this problem
generally?

Best wishes

Robin
