[sdpd] Re: SDPD: Robin Shirley (1941 to 2005)

Hi,

Hard to believe ! Robin was a Figure of this SDPD mailing
list. He was always ready to help and to give advice on indexing
problems. This was probably only the iceberg visible part,
since he answered to many questions about CRYSFIRE
directly to the students of the SDPD Internet Course.

I was also at this Egypt Assiut meeting, November/
December 2004. I can see Robin in plenty of my souvenirs,
struggling with the PC arabian windows version during the
computer lab sessions, taking pictures on the boat during
the trip on the Nile, etc. We had just received reprints of a
common paper (Z. Kristallogr. 219 (2004) 783-790.)
in which one can find something like his scientific testimony
about indexing : "It is demonstrated how not restricting
oneself to a single indexing program can considerably
increase the chances of success." We can hope that his
CRYSFIRE package integrating so many independent indexing
programs will continue to give practical illustrations of that
sentence. Taking his route and maintaining CRYSFIRE
seems an absolute necessity to the Community of Powder
Diffractionists. I am afraid that the task will not be easy. He
was undoubtedly the Giant in that topic. I completely agreed
with his global views.

He will especially miss me.

Armel

PS - Robin on a few pictures taken at this egyptian meeting.
On the Nile, with Karimat El-Sayed, and during a visit of the
sport installations of the Assiut campus after his performance
(he run a 400m !):
