School Program:

The School program is now available on the web as an Adobe Acrobate
PDF file at:

-----------------------

Aim of the school:

The Teaching Commission (TC) of the International Union of
Crystallography (IUCr) proposes to organise an International School on
Basic Crystallography. Recognising that basic crystallographic curricula
is regressing in the academic bachelors and masters formation, the TC
expects to fill this formation gap by organising an intensive one week
course possibly on a periodic basis.

The organisation of the school will be close to the successful model
adopted by the British Crystallography Association (BCA), which has
acquired an excellent popularity since its existence.

-----------------------

Topics covered by the lectures:

After a general introduction to crystallography, the student will first
acquire elementary notions on matrices and group theories in order to
get familiar with the concept of crystal symmetry. The concept of
isometry will lead to point and space group symmetries. The student will
be able to understand the description of crystalline structures on the
basis of its space group, lattice constants and atomic coordinates.

The student will then be introduced to diffraction, which is fundamental
for the study of matter at the atomic level. The various X-ray and
neutron diffraction techniques, based on single crystal and powder
methods, will be introduced. The techniques of data acquisitions,
structure solutions and refinements will be followed by the derivation
and the interpretation of the results. Finally, the student will be
introduced to information retrieval from the numerous crystallographic
databases, which are of prime importance for any research in the field
of crystallography.

-----------------------

Organisation of the Course.

The topics will be presented to students in two equally distributed
forms, namely ex cathedra teaching during the morning and tutoring
during the afternoon. The lecturers are experienced crystallographers
with excellent international reputation and a long experience in
teaching. Following the presentation of each topic, tutors will lead the
students by working in small groups with the aim to solve practical
exercises.

The organisers are very happy that some of BCA lecturers and tutors have
accepted to participate in the present school.

-----------------------

Prerequisite

The prerequisite for the participation are limited to basic knowledge in
algebra, physics and chemistry at the bachelor's degree.

Documents

Each student will receive a set of lecture notes and exercises covering
all the presented topics.

-----------------------

Lecturers

The following scientists have already accepted to act as lectures in the
school: Alexander Blake (Nottingham, UK), Gervais Chapuis (Lausanne,
Switzerland), Jacqueline Cole (Cambridge, UK), Giuseppe Cruciani
(Ferrara, Italy), Robert Gould (Edinburgh, UK), Giovanni Ferraris
(Torino, Italy), Anthony Linden (Zurich, Switzerland), Peter Main (York,
UK), David Watkin (Oxford, UK)

The Venue

The Certosa di Pontignano has its origins as a medieval 14th century
monastary. It now belongs to the University of Siena. Attractively placed
on the top of a hill, it is surrounded by vineyards; with a direct view
to the town of Siena, and a famous Chianti winery.

The City

Siena is described as one of the finest examples of a Medieval city. It
is in the Italian province of Tuscany and has direct bus connection to
Florence (1 hour) and Rome (3 hours). Siena can be reached by
plane+train via Rome, Milan, Florence and Pisa. Cheap flights can be
booked from the North of Europe to Pisa.

-----------------------

Registration

Applicants should register using the registration information via the
school website

     http://www.iucr.org/iucr-top/comm/cteach/siena2006/registration.html

The registration fee is 500 Euros and includes full board and lodging
(shared room) from the evening of Sun. 27 August till the morning of
Sat. 2 Sep. 2006. A few single rooms may be available, with a 50 Euros
surcharge, (to be paid in Pontignano).

A full set of lecture notes is also included in the registration fee.

The attendance is limited to maximum 60 students.

Deadline for registration is June 30th 2006.

-----------------------

Bursaries

Thanks to the support of the School Sponsors a limited number of
bursaries are available for young scientists (graduate students,
post-graduate students or post-doctoral fellows with a maximum age of
30).

The bursary is 300 Euros, dedicated to pay the accomodation cost (which
includes shared accomodation and meals), thus reducing the fees to 200
Euros.

Application deadline for bursaries is May 30th. A short CV, including
full address, age, gender and position together with a letter from the
supervisor should be sent to Marcello Mellini (mellini...@unisi.it) and to
Paola Spadon (paola.spadon...@unipd.it).

After confirmation, applicants will be required to pay the due amount
within the normal registration deadline, June 30th.

IUCr Scientific Freedom Policy Statement

The Organising Committee of the "Basic School in Crystallography" shall
observe the basic policy of non-discrimination and affirms the right and
freedom of scientists to associate in international scientific activity
without regard to such factors as citizenship, religion, creed,
political stance, ethnic origin, race, colour, language, age or gender,
in accordance with the Statutes of the International Council for
Science.

At this School no barriers will exist which would prevent the
participation of bona fide scientists.
