Re: [sdpd] Comments on SDPD by anonymous reviewers

Continuing in this series of mortal comments about SDPD
manuscripts.

A title for this one : 3D is obsolete, use 4D.
(well, maybe the reviewer is right, damn !)

In 2008-9 for the SDPD of La18W10O57 (The SDPDRR3 sample 2) :

The anonymous reviewer says :
...
"Furthermore, one of the authors being internationally recognized for his
skill with powder data, the structure refinement should be correct, at
least in its main features, according to a treatment of diffraction data.
However, I also think that a more clever way to treat it would be to
benefit of the strong similarity existing in this part of the system with
1D-hexagonal perovskite materials of
formulaA3m+3nAâ¬"nB3m+nO9m+6n which are generally treated using the
4D-formalism.
...
"To me, a better way to treat the crystal structure (ccording to a
reasonable number of
ref. parameters) would correspond to a commensurate 4D-treatment of the
data (using powder
data, several softwares are available free of charge). Here, the
observation of satellites of
every order, according to TEM images, indicate modulation of occupancies
according to
Crenel-like functions ( = present or absent along the 4th dimension) rather
than smooth
sinusoidal-like functions. It would probably fix the problem of disorder
over the W6 position,
probably falsely generated by the -6 axes. In a 3D treatment, the P31c
space group should be
more exact, but leads to a prohibitive number of refined parameter. The 7xc
supercell could
also be handled in this way.
So to conclude, I do not think the paper publishable in its actual form in
inorg. Chem. :
Important elements of discussion are missing and the 3D-treatment appears
obsolete. At least,
a less prestigious solid state journal, with addition of discussion about
the size and nature of
empty sites, and comparison with analogue systems."

PS - This series for showing you that you are not alone in the dark
SDPD world to have to resist to anonymous decapitation/hanging.
Or is this treatment reserved to some "internationally recognized authors ?"
The more the hanged are famous, the more the hangman feels
satisfaction ?
