PhD fellowships vacancies: training in crystallography

The Italian National Research Council (CNR), through IC (Institute of Crystallography) is offering some fellowships mainly focused onto the study and development of crystallographic methods. An opportunity of training in this area will be offered to post-graduate fellows in Physics, Chemistry, Geological Sciences, Material Science, Biotechnologies to improve their knowledge of methods and techniques in crystallography.

Their activities will be focused mainly on crystal structure solution, powder diffraction data analysis, properties of policrystalline materials, quantitative analysis and study and development of

Techniques for proteins structure determination.

The fellows will be hosted at CNR-IC, an institute of the Italian National Research Council, where they will join a group of researchers and PhD students. Fellows will be expected to attend and to give seminars and to be fully integrated into the scientific activities of the Institute, having thus the opportunity of joining one of the major European groups in crystallography, with an outstanding research reputation.

Research and training opportunities will be offered in the following areas:

Ø      development of new methods for ab-initio crystal structure solution (small- and macro-molecules);

Ø      study and development of MIR (Multiple Isomorphous Replacement) and MAD (Multiple Wavelength Anomalous Dispersion) techniques for proteins;

Ø      development of innovative techniques for the treatment of powder diffraction data. Methods for crystal structure solution, completion and refinement are also developed;

Ø      Powder Diffraction from nanocrystals;

Ø      Development of crystallographic software aiming at the implementation of new theoretical approaches;

Ø      development of crystallographic instruments (hardware and software) building the electronic  logic circuits and writing control programs;

Ø      development of WWW interfaces, providing a user-friendly environment for the remote control of instruments following the evolution of the networking technology and distributed computing;

Ø      the use of synchrotron radiation, in order to:

§        Increase the efficiency of diffraction data collection for protein crystallographic studies.

§        Study single crystals and crystal powders for material science and minerals using facilities for high pressure and low temperature.

Ø      Protein crystallography

These fellowships will be offered on behalf of the "Marie Curie Development Host Fellowships Programme" available under the Fifth Framework Programme funded by the European Community.

The fellow must be pursuing studies for a PhD-level degree and the stay must be directly relevant to the doctoral studies pursued. The stay at CNR-IC or CNR-ISC (Institute for Structural Chemistry) must be recognised as an integral part of the  doctoral studies as confirmed in writing by the supervisor of the doctoral studies in the home university.

The duration of each fellow's project is between 3 and 12 months and fellows must be nationals of a Member or Associated State or able to provide proof of having resided in one of the Member States for at least the last five years prior to their selection. In case of non EU/Associated State national, he/she is not eligible if he/she was residing in Italy for more than two years in the last five years immediately prior to the selection date.

The training activities are expected to be carried out at CNR-IC (Bari) and at CNR ISC (Montelibretti, Rome), under the co-ordination of Prof. Carmelo Giacovazzo.

The indicative gross monthly subsistence allowance will be 1200 Euro plus some allowance for travel.

Eligibility Criteria for Fellows[1]

The fellows selected by the hosts must meet the following criteria at the time of selection:

1. Nationality or residence

Fellows must be nationals of a Member or Associated State (see lists of Member and Associated States in section 3.1), or be able to provide proof of having resided in Member States for at least the last five years prior to their selection by the host (e.g. national residing permits; employment contracts, university registration, etc.). Fellows should ensure that they are able to fulfil the immigration and visa requirements for the Member or Associated State in which the host institution is located.

2. Mobility

Fellows may not carry out their fellowship in the country of their nationality and his/her recent centre of  activity. Hosts cannot appoint researchers who have carried out their normal activity  (work, studies etc.) in  the country where the research is going to take place for more than 12 months in the two years immediately  prior to their selection by the host. For Marie Curie Training Sites, fellows may not carry out their fellowship in the country where they normally pursue their doctoral studies. Additionally, nationals of an Associated State may only carry out their fellowship in a Member State.

3. Age limit

The fellow must be of age 35 years or less. However, allowance, in this respect, is made for time actually served in compulsory military or civil service and for childcare with a maximum of 2 years per child for the actual time spent off work.
