Abstract: Recent developments in the chemistry and properties of both oxovanadium IV and V phosphates are reviewed. Synthesis pathways and known crystal structures are presented. Preparative chemistry is rationalized on the basis of the aqueous vanadium-phosphate complex equilibria, and the thermal transformation of V(IV) phases into vanadyl pyrophosphate is described. Topological features are used to establish a structural classification which in turn facilitates the analysis of their magnetic properties.

Abstract: Precise high-resolution x-ray-diffraction measurements of the lattice parameters as a function of temperature are reported for the mixed system KMn(1-x)Ca(x)F3 in the concentration range x < 0.05. From the splitting of the cubic (0,0,4) Bragg reflection it is possible to determine the transition temperatures of the structural phase transitions which occur in this system and to establish the phase diagram in the concentration range x < 0.05. Three structural phase transitions are observed in this system and the transition temperatures at which they occur are enhanced when Mn2+ ions are substituted by Ca2+ ions. The enhancement rates are, respectively, 5.8, 18, and 14 K/at. % Ca2+ ions. This shows that a crossover between the T(c1) and the T(c2) transitions should occur at the extrapolated critical concentration x = 0.075.

Abstract: The longitudinal vibrations of the PtCl linear chain and those of various valence defects are described by a one-dimensional model in a first-nearest-neighbour interaction approximation. The analysis is performed as a function of the K2/K1 ratio (K1 and K2 representing the PtCl(IV)-Cl and Pt(II)-Cl force constants, respectively), which is shown to play an important role in the vibrational characteristics of the defects while the infrared frequencies are not strongly dependent on a particular ratio. A coherent description of the frequencies of the modes of the perfect chain and those of the polaronic defects is obtained for K2/K1 = 0.3. For this ratio the electron polaron and the electron bipolaron give rise to one Raman-active mode while at least two are predicted for the other investigated defects. The shapes of the Raman bands associated with the electron and hole polarons are explained by the chlorine isotopic effect. The vibration associated with the electron bipolaron is predicted to be at about 210 cm-1 where a broad line grows upon photolysis. An elementary calculation based upon a Born-Mayer potential for short-range interactions, adjusted from the interionic distances, leads to force constants of the same magnitude as those adjusted from the experimental frequencies.

Abstract: Cathodoluminescence (CL) examination of Recent biogenic carbonates shows that they are often luminescent regardless of their mineralogical composition (calcite v. aragonite), habitat (marine v. fresh water), way of life (sessile v. vagile) or environment (hyper- v. hyposaline water). Thus, the presence of luminescence in biogenic particles is not a reliable indicator of diagenetic alteration as some authors have suggested. In addition, CL can reveal variations in the mineralogy of shell material (e.g. regenerated calcitic v. primary aragonitic) and can highlight growth-related structures. Manganese (Mn2+) is the most likely activator of this luminescence, and its content in the shells of benthic organisms seems to be linked to growth rate, ontogeny, open sea conditions, bathymetry and salinity. In neritic environments the Mn2+ content and the CL of molluscs and foraminifera appear to increase with decreasing salinity. This study indicates that CL may be an important tool for the determination of environmental and ontogenetic parameters in biogenic carbonates in addition to its current use in diagenetic studies.

Abstract: The optical properties of Cr3+ ions in lead-based fluoride glasses (PBI, PZG) have been investigated. Optical absorption, emission, lifetimes, and time resolved spectra were measured. The thermal quenching of the broadband emission is discussed in terms of the quantum mechanical single configurational coordinate (QMSCC) model using the Struck and Fonger method, and a good agreement with the experimental results is obtained. In order to correlate glass matrix composition with emission spectral properties, detailed time-resolved measurements have been performed. The obtained results provide a first insight into a possible site distribution of Cr3+ in these glasses.

Abstract: The Mossbauer spectra of the two crystallographic forms alpha- and beta-(NH4)2FeF5 have been studied in the temperature range 4.2-300 K. The alpha-form presents typical one-dimensional behavior showing a transition to magnetic ordering at T(c) = (7.5 +/- 0.5) K. The spectra of the beta-form indicates the presence at low temperature of two different iron sites, while the room temperature crystal structure shows only one site for the iron ions. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements evidence the presence of a reversible structural phase transition at T(s) = (168.0 +/- 1) K on heating and T(s) = (187.0 +/- 3) K on cooling. This form also exhibits a magnetic ordering phase transition at T(c) = (13 +/- 1) K.

Abstract: The modification of isotactic poly(propylene) by nitrogen plasma treatment was studied in comparison to the use of a carbon dioxide plasma, which was reported earlier. The effect of the modification was characterized with secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) to a depth of 3 angstrom, with electronic spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) to a depth of 20 angstrom and with attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to a depth of 10-mu-m: the nitrogen plasma modification seems to be milder than the CO2 plasma treatment. Surface degradation is a minor reaction, and in an opposite manner, crosslinking and functionalization (formation of primary amino groups) are the most important reactions. Radicals, probably originating from the elimination of [methyl groups] along the polymer backbone, could induce these reactions.

Abstract: A new form (noted Ib) of polymorphic Ba3AlF9 is evidenced with the same space group (Pnma) than the first form (noted Ia), but it has a twice smaller cell volume: a = 10.063(9) angstrom, b = 5.567(6) angstrom, c = 14.88(1) angstrom, Z = 4. The structure was solved from single crystal data using 862 independent reflections (R = 0.028, R(w) = 0.028). The two forms exhibit similar structures with isolated [AlF6] octahedra separated by barium and "independent" fluorine ions. The main difference arises from the barium tetrahedra around "independent" fluorine ions which build up (2 x infinity) stripes along the b axis in the polytypic form Ib instead of (4 x infinity) stripes in form Ia.

Abstract: The magnetic structure of the tetragonal bronze-like KMnFeF6 is solved by means of neutron powder diffraction. The structure (space group Pb' a2') consists of a non-collinear arrangement of spins lying in the (a, b) plane of the crystal cell. Spins belonging to triangular platelets adopt a star arrangement very close to the ideal 120-degrees configuration, whereas the arrangement in square platelets is almost exactly antiparallel. The magnetic structure of KMnFeF6 has been successfully simulated with the program MCMAG by assuming isotropic AF interactions between nearest magnetic neighbours (superexchange interactions).

Layers are built up from distorted [CoO3Cl2(H2O)]6-octahedra, with Cl atoms in cis positions, sharing an edge of two O atoms, forming dimers connected together by corners (Cl atoms only). The (H2PO2)-tetrahedra connect two octahedra dimers and their O atoms are directed towards the next layer. The water molecule forms intralayer hydrogen bonds only. The sheets with formula CoCl(H2PO2)(H2O) are connected by weak (van der Waals) H-H, H-O and H-Cl bonds.

Abstract: The ternary system BaF2-CuF2-GaF3 is investigated by X-ray diffraction experiments. It exhibits seven quaternary phases: six of which correspond to types previously evidenced in other BaF2-CuF2-MF3 systems (three "polytypic" phases obtained by adding small amounts of GaF3 to BaCuF4, a tetragonal non-stoichiometric phase: Ba3+xGa2-2xCu2xF12 and two stoichiometric fluorides: triclinic Ba2CuGa2F12 and monoclinic Ba10Cu12GaF47); the seventh compound Ba3CuGa2F14 hitherto unknown, corresponds to a new structural type. It is monoclinic (pseudo-orthorhombic) space group P2(1)/n with a = 7.402(3) angstrom, b = 27.88(1) angstrom, c = 5.521(2) angstrom, beta = 90.12(3)-degrees, Z = 4. The structure was solved from single crystal data using 5133 independent reflections (R = 0.047, R(w) = 0.051). It is built up from infinite cis-chains of GaF6 octahedra linked by monocapped trigonal prisms CuF7.

Abstract: Measurements of the small-angle neutron scattering by polymer clusters near the gelation threshold have been made possible, in the bulk state, using mixtures of deuterated and hydrogenated polyurethane samples. The exponent which links the scattered intensity to the transfer vector q is predicted to be (3 - tau)D(p), where tau is the exponent which characterizes the mass distribution and D(p) the fractal dimension of polymer clusters in the bulk state. This exponent is found to be equal to 2.00 +/- 0.05. Using this result and the tau-value determined in a previous experiment on the same system, we verify the hyperscaling law and deduce D(p) = 2.50 +/- 0.06.

Abstract: A full topological description of gelatin gels requires knowledge of the number, size and functionality of the helical segments, which act as effective junction zones. Selective enzymatic attack on renatured gelatin has allowed us to isolate the helical segments by size exclusion chromatography. For sharp fractions, the size of the helical segments is almost independent of initial molecular weight and is about 100-200 amino acid residues for each strand. This size does not depend very much on concentration, but increases slowly with renaturation time and with temperature. We believe that helical segments are always formed by the same process: in accordance with previous kinetic studies, the starting point would be a bimolecular nucleation. For such nucleation, two strands are necessarily antiparallel, and this can explain the limited length of the helices.

Abstract: Ultrasonics measurements were performed during the cure of epoxy resins. The results show some different comportments if there is only the gelation process which passes through the frequency window of the study or if there is also a vitrification phenomenon. The last case occurs with a high glass transition temperature epoxy resin like DGEBA-DDS, with which the increasing glass transition temperature of the resin is rapidly higher than the study temperature. The former case happens for low Tg epoxy resin like BDGE-HMDA. But in any case the method is very sensitive to the mechanical properties evolution of the material.

Abstract: Let A = (A(vw): v, w epsilon-V) be a symmetric binary matrix. For W is contained in or equal to V, let A[W] = (A(vw: v, w epsilon-W). The set F = {W:W is contained in or equal to V, A]W[ has an inverse or W = empty set} satisfies the following symmetric exchange axiom (SEA): for F', F" epsilon-F, for chi-epsilon-F' DELTA-F", there exists y epsilon-F' DELTA F" such that F' DELTA {chi, y} epsilon-F. A DELTA-matroid is a pair (V, F) with a finite set V and empty set not-equal F is contained in or equal to P (V) satisfying (SEA). We characterize those DELTA-matroids which can be obtained, as above, by means of a symmetric binary matrix.

Abstract: A diminutive species of Aglaothamnion (Ceramiaceae, Rhodophyta), A. diaphanum sp. nov., is described from Brittany (Atlantic France), the Isles of Scilly (off S.W. England) and western Ireland. Aglaothamnion diaphanum is confined to the sublittoral zone, where it grows almost exclusively on algae and sessile animals attached to hard substrata. Thalli are delicate, and branched distichously in one plane. The main axes are ecorticate but may form loose non-corticating rhizoidal filaments. The lateral branches bear a characteristic, regularly alternate distichous series of branchlets, the first of which is always adaxial. All vegetative cells are uninucleate. The majority of field-collected plants bear only bisporangia, but a few bisporangial plants also form spermatangia; some male plants and a single female specimen have been collected. The spermatangial branchlets consist of 3-5 spermatangial mother cells each bearing 2-4 spermatangia, which are constricted around a central nucleus. None of the U-shaped carpogonial branches showed any sign of fertilization, and the gametangia appear to be non-functional. The bisporangia are ovoid and contain two uninucleate spores separated by an oblique curved wall. The occurrence of bisporangia and the lack of adherent cortication distinguish A. diaphanum from two similar species, Aglaothamnion bipinnatum (P. Crouan et H. Crouan) Feldmann-Mazoyer and Aglaothamnion decompositum (J. Agardh) Halos. The life history in culture of French and Irish isolates of A. diaphanum consists of a series of bisporangial generations, a single plant of which also formed spermatangia. Apical cells of bisporophytes are haploid (n = c. 32), but the first division of meiosis, with chromosome pairing and crossing over, occurs in dividing bisporocytes. The germinating bispores are haploid. Endodiploidization may occur in the early stages of sporangium development, as in some phycomycete fungi, or in vegetative cells that subsequently give rise to bisporocytes. This is the first demonstration in the red algae of meiotic bisporangia on plants of which the apical cells, at least, are haploid.

The [NdO7(OH2)2] units share an edge (two O atoms from two acetate groups). The resulting dimeric entities are linked one to another through one (CoO6) octahedron, which shares one corner with each prism. This gives an (NdNdCo) sequence in the chains, which are interconnected by rather weak hydrogen bonds involving the six lattice water molecules.

Abstract: In June 1976, tabular and lenticular gypsum crystals were collected from the supersaturated Casamance ria. They are composed of an ordered association of fibres (diameter from 1 to 2-mu-m), having the same crystalline orientation, stacked parallel to (001) and (010). The distribution of straight or curved faces is determined by the local disposition of the fibrous frame, which reorganized in a few weeks forming monocrystals.

Abstract: The Queyras ophiolite and its pelagic sedimentary cover originate from the Ligurian Tethys ocean, which opened in the Late Middle Jurassic and spread during Late Jurassic and Cretaceous times. Three superimposed sequences are distinguished in the obducted units. (A) Ultramafic sequence: its lower part (A1) is mainly made up of mantle-derived tectonite lherzolite which are intruded by a few gabbro bodies (dykes and small magma chambers); the partial melting and the intrusion of the gabbro magma seem to have occurred inside the subcontinental mantle during the continental, preoceanic rifting (+/- Liassic). Both the lherzolites and the gabbros are sealed up by a major discontinuity (d1) that marks the base of the sedimentary upper part (A2) of the sequence, which is made up of ultramafic breccias, namely the sedimentary ophicalcites OC2 (serpentinite pebbles in a carcareous matrix). (B) Basaltic sequence: thin (a few metres to a few tens of metres, exceptionally a few hundreds) and above all discontinuous tholeiitic pillow lavas. (C) Pelagic sedimentary sequence (Late Middle Jurassic to Late Cretaceous): radiolarian cherts, shales, limestones, calcschists, with numerous intercalations of ophiolitic arenites, breccias and olistoliths; these detrital intercalations which occur especially in the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous beds witness a repeated tectonic activity of the ocean floor during its spreading. Similar peculiarities are known from other ophiolites that derive from the Ligurian ocean, especially those of Corsica and of the Northern Apennines. Therefore, a significant part of this ocean was characterized by a thin and very discontinuous basaltic layer and by the lack both of a continuous gabbroic layer and of a sheeted dyke complex. Sediments (serpentinite breccias OC2 and pelagic deposits) and/or local, thin basaltic submarine lava-flows were emplaced above an already uncovered mantle-derived ocean floor. If the radiometric dating of the gabbros is accepted without any discussion, the two magmatic events (gabbros in sequence A and Basalts B) were separated by a rather long time span, possibly 30-40 my, which sets a problem. During this interval, however, a complex suite of tectonic, metamorphic (e.g. foliation and metamorphism of the gabbros) and sedimentary events occurred. Nevertheless, other ophiolite massifs of the Alphs display different features; for instance, the Viso ophiolite comprises a continuous (40 km long) gabbroic layer overlain by a continuous basaltic layer; but without a sheeted dyke complex.

A comparison with the axial part of the Central Atlantic ocean shows both similar features and variations: Queyras-type successions are known close to the mid-Atlantic ridge, and, conversely, the outcrops surveyed along the Vema escarpment exhibit a 3 km thick ocean crust with a gabbroic layer overlain by a 1-1.5 km-thick sheeted dyke complex. Such variations between two parts of the same ocean recall the differences known in the Ligurian vanished ocean, e.g. between the Queyras-Northern Appennines type ophiolite and the Viso-type ophiolite. Genetic models might account for such "patchwork" features.

Abstract: Stand and ecophysiological data sets from 20 maritime pine plots, have been compared. These plots were stratified into 2 groups by degree of vitality: healthy and declining. Using a stepwise multiple regression we found a negative correlation between the radial growth index of one year and wet winters of the previous year. Another observation was that these forest are compound in origin, with 2 kinds of provnance, "Aquitaine" and "Iberian". The foliar calcium/sodium and potassium/sodium ratio in the needles differentiate both the healthy vs declining populations and the 2 provenances. Results of a principal components analysis suggested that maritime pine forest decline is a climate provenance interaction phenomenon due to sodium toxicity.

Abstract: The vicinal Si(100) faces have a reconstruction with double or single steps, depending on the miscut of the surface. In our He-atom-scattering experiment, the reconstruction of the Si(1117) face is investigated versus temperature. The miscut (4.76-degrees) is chosen in such a manner that it is above the threshold where the double steps are always formed. A strong structural modification is observed at high temperatures (above 800 K), and is interpreted as the appearance of the single-step reconstruction. Recent theoretical models predicting the transition are considered and a calculation is done on this basis using recently published experimental values of the energy of kinks on steps.

Abstract: The magnetic structure of alpha-KCrF4, presented in a previous article of this series is re-examined. It appears that, due to the pseudosymmetry of the crystal cell, two magnetic models are quasi-equivalent. Although these models are impossible to differentiate from magnetic neutron diffraction only, detailed examination of the superexchange configuration allows one to discriminate in favor of the new model without any ambiguity. As a consequence, the frustrated magnetic structure of alpha-KCrF4 allows one to derive the dependence of the coupling constants via superexchange path Cr3+ -F- -Cr3+ on the superexchange angle theta, namely J-theta/J180-degrees = 0.69 + 1.69 cos2-theta.

Abstract: Several solid solutions of the mixed fluoride series Fe(1-x)Ga(x)F3 with 0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 1 were synthesized by solid state reaction. They crystallize in space group R3BARc, identical to that of r-FeF3 and r-GaF3. The presence of six-fold coordinated trivalent high-spin iron atoms is evidence by Mossbauer spectroscopy. The magnetic ordering temperatures decrease linearly with increasing gallium content and vanish at the extrapolated value 1 - x = 0.31, close to the theoretical percolation threshold. High field Mossbauer spectroscopy and susceptibility measurements give a clear evidence for antiferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract: Many papers or reviews present the percolation theory as pertinent to the chemical gelation problem. But most of these studies are related to the critical behaviour of standard bond or site percolation models. Such approaches ignore totally the specific chemical features which allow the large variety of structures and properties exhibited by chemical networks. The ideal would be to have a model able to mimic realistically the chemical gelation process by taking into account the specificities of each chemical system investigated. But then a basic question arises: do the singularities change the universal behaviour? This study aims to contribute to answer this question in the particular case of the gelation made by stepwise polymerization. In such systems, gelation may be avoided by introducing monofunctional monomers which are killing the cluster growth. This case is examined in this paper and corresponds to a site-bond percolation problem. Phase diagram is established and the different ways to cross the critical line of this diagram are investigated. The results outline the fact that topological constraints applied to the monomer connection may prevent the system from having a universal critical behaviour. Deleting these topological constraints, by giving a fictive mobility to the monomers, allows us to find again a universal behaviour for the system. This work justifies a posteriori experimental studies on the critical behaviour of the chemical gelation run with quenched systems. It also confirms that chemical stepwise gelation and standard percolation belong to the same universality class and illustrates how this model may be modified to be more realistic.

Abstract: Single crystals of the fluoride compound KY3F10 (O(h)5) were studied by Raman scattering from 40 to 950 K. Group theory analysis predicts 3A1g + 4E(g) + 6F2g Raman-active modes, but the experimental spectra show two F2g modes missing. Over the whole temperature range the frequency shifts are negligible whereas the line widths show a strong increase with temperature. Both reversible and irreversible line width behaviour are exhibited for different temperature runs, indicating a complex microscopic phenomenon underlying the creation of defects responsible for these line widths and their interaction with the different phonon modes. An approximate activation energy for defect creation of DELTA-E almost-equal-to 0.3 eV can be obtained from the temperature behaviour of the line widths. This activation energy may be connected with the high-temperature ionic conduction mentioned previously for this crystal.

Abstract: The magnetic behaviour of Fe3F8(H2O)2 has been simulated with the program MCMAG which uses a Monte Carlo algorithm. The magnetic structure of the compound has been successfully reproduced and the ratio between nearest magnetic neighbours interactions has been determined, namely J(Fe)2+-Fe3+/J(Fe)3+-Fe3+ = 0.75. From this coupling constant ratio, the "idle spin" behaviour of Fe3F8(H2O)2 has been reproduced, as well as the effect of a magnetic field on its structure. The magnetic field induced transition observed in the compound has thus been explained by means of the simulation. The unusual magnetic behaviour of Fe3F8(H2O)2 is mostly due to the presence of magnetic frustration in the compound.

Abstract: Continuous seismic profiles across the E-W southern Guinean margin have been analysed, in order to better understand the structure of this margin and its evolution; in this paper, we analyse the transverse component of the successive movements that took place along this margin: a short compressional event has occurred at the end of the early Cretaceous synrift extension; it was just followed by an overall collapse of the margin and by the subsequent opening of the Sierra Leone oceanic basin probably in Cenomanian times. The compressive event, the origin of which remains hypothetical, resulted in inversion tectonics; at that time, were formed the main characteristic structures of the present day margin: (1) a marginal ridge overhanging the abyssal plain and (2) within the continental slope, an almost parallel, hanging, elongated basin. Because of unusual inversion processes, we may speculate if the first order margin faults (created during the rifting stage), were not more steeply dipping than in more classical passive margins; this could be related to the general transform setting of the southern Guinean margin.

Abstract: We propose the name Aglaothamnion westbrookiae sp. nov. for the alga referred to as Callithamnion byssoides Arnott ex Harvey in Hooker by Edwards and others from the eastern coast of North America. A. westbrookiae differs from the European A. byssoides (Arnott ex Harvey in Hooker) L'Hardy-Halos et Rueness (= C. byssoides, type locality Cornwall, England) by having fronds branched pinnately, not spirally as in A. byssoides. The gonimolobes in A. westbrookiae are rounded, not conical and lobed as in A. byssoides. The spermatangia are in dense hemispherical clusters whereas in A. byssoides the equivalent structure is elongated. The two taxa are sexually incompatible. Aglaothamnion westbrookiae also differs in morphological features and is not interfertile with A. pseudobyssoides from France. We suggest that A. westbrookiae and A. feldmanniae Halos from Europe are similar in most features, including the involucral branches subtending carposporophytes. However, crossability tests demonstrated that they are not interfertile, and differences in vegetative structure suggest that they should be treated as two different species.

Abstract: Isotropic systems are structures which unify some properties of 4-regular graphs and of pairs of dual binary matroids. In this paper we unify the properties of the symmetric Tutte polynomials (i.e. with equal variables) of binary matroids and of the Martin polynomials of 4-regular graphs. For this purpose we introduce the orienting vectors of an isotropic system in order to generalize the eulerian orientations of 4-regular graphs.

Abstract: The succession recovered in ODP hole 107-651 in the young oceanic Vavilov basin (Tyrrhenian Sea) comprises, beneath a thick Pleistocene to Upper Pliocene sedimentary cover (chiefly volcanoclastics), four basement units: (1) MORB-type basaltic pillows and breccias; (2) a complex succession made of dolerites, albitites, basaltic breccias, metadolerite pebbles (including an intercalated sandy layer with periodotite clasts); (3) MORB-type basaltic pillows and breccias; (4) highly serpentinized peridotite. Between units 3 and 4, granitoid pebbles occur.

This sequence is surprisingly similar to successions known in the Western Alps' Tethyan ophiolites. There, the sediments (Callovian-Oxfordian radiolarian cherts) lie stratigraphically upon breccias mostly derived from underlying serpentinite, and sometimes gabbroic basement. At some places, thin basaltic (tholeiitic) pillows and breccias occur between the radiolarian cherts and the breccias.

From the comparison between a present day setting (the central Tyrrhenian Sea) and a formerly emplaced basement succession (the Western Alps), we stress the following (a) both the here-discussed ophiolites and oceanic basement are different from classical ophiolite sequences; (b) both occurrences imply unroofing of mantle rocks that therefore were directly outcropping on the seafloor; (c) such a comparison may indicate a very slow spreading rate for the Alpine Tethyan ocean.

Abstract: A formalism for calculating the surface phonon dispersion curves in surface alloys, is presented, using the matching technique and an effective field approach that goes beyond the virtual crystal approximation. Numerical results are exemplified for the [010] direction in the Pt(c)Cu1-c first layer alloy on a Cu(001) substrate, for random and Ising correlated distributions of Pt and Cu atoms. For different Pt concentrations, the surface alloy is characterized strongly by different mode signatures in the window of the projected bulk phonon distribution on the Cu(001) surface, at energies of approximately 20 meV. The initial Rayleigh mode shifts are significant, and another Rayleigh mode appears, with increasing Pt concentrations. This second mode distinguishes between random and correlated distributions within instrument resolution of He scattering and EELS.

Abstract: A scale of confinement in the recent paralic environments of western Africa can be proposed based on the distribution of foraminiferal assemblages. It is thus possible to describe the gradual evolution from an oceanic environment, where marine species are dominant, to a continental environmental characterized by the disappearance of foraminifers and the development of the thecamoebians. The peculiar environments of athalassic salt lakes are not considered here. This scale, based on four characteristic assemblages and extended to 90 species can be applied to recent or fossil paralic ecosystems. However, it must be used with caution as its significance may change with hydrological properties.

The hexagonal Z phase belongs to a family of intermetallics Al-Li-(Cu-Zn-Mg) which have relationships with the icosahedral Al-Cu-Li phase. By using a description proposed by Samson [Structural Chemistry and Molecular Biology (1968), edited by Rich & Davidson, pp. 687-717. This polyhedron is directly related to the complete Samson polyhedron determined in the b.c.c. structure of R-Al5CuLi3. Such a result suggests that the Friauf polyhedron could be the only structural unit common to quasi-crystalline and related crystalline Al-Li-(Cu-Zn-Mg) phases.

Abstract: The occurrence of chain transfers has been studied during the anionic polymerization of protic thiiranes in dimethylformamide initiated by tetramethylammonium dithiobenzoate. Results on polymer molecular weights and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra as well as polymerization rates have been used in a comparative study of hydroxymethylthiirane and mercaptomethylthiirane polymerizations. We have demonstrated that chain transfers occur significantly with mercaptomethylthiirane while they may be considered as non-existent with hydroxymethylthiirane. This is due to the equilibrium between 'thiolate' and 'olate' ions being more favourable to thiolate because of the relative acidity of thiols and alcohols.

Abstract: Addition of carbon tetrachloride to carbon-carbon double bonds of 1,2-polybutadiene (MBAR(n) < 10,000), when performed in dichloromethane and catalysed by dichlorotris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium II, proceeds differently from addition for terminal alkenes in which case a selective anti-Markovnikov 1:1 addition is found. In order to understand the processes which occur during the chemical modification, a study on model molecules for 1,2-polybutadiene has been carried out. Two models have been selected: 3-ethyl-1-pentene (a) and 1,6-heptadiene (b). It has been shown that CCl4 adds selectively to a to form essentially the 1:1 adduct with high yields, whereas its addition on b leads mostly to 1:2 cyclic derivatives of cyclopentane type. The spectroscopic information obtained from model studies has allowed a precise characterization of modified 1,2-polybutadiene microstructures and, then, to check the importance of the prominent part played by cyclization during the addition. A general interpretation of CCl4 addition mechanism to 1,2-polybutadiene, including the cyclization phenomenon, is given.

Abstract: The magnetic structures of Fe3F8(H2O)2 are solved at 40 and 2 K from neutron powder diffraction data. At 40 K, the magnetic cell is identical with the nuclear cell (a = 7.544(3) angstrom, b = 7.4324(5) angstrom, c = 7.387(3) angstrom, beta = 117.26(2)degrees, C2/m, Z = 2); the Fe3+ magnetic moments (mu = 3.98(4)mu-B) lie along b with a G type antiferromagnetic mode while Fe2+ spins remain paramagnetic. At 2 K, the magnetic cell is doubled along c: (a = 7.543(3) angstrom, b = 7.4314(4) angstrom, c = 14.773(5) angstrom, beta = 117.26(2)degrees); the Fe3+ magnetic moments (mu = 4.30(12) mu-B) tilt apart from b axis while the Fe2+ spins (mu = 3.97(13)mu-B order in the (a, c) plane. Neutron diffraction experiments confirm the "idle spin" behaviour, due to magnetic frustration, of Fe2+ in Fe3F8(H2O)2.

Abstract: The late Jurassic and earliest Cretaceous sediments of the eastern Rif foreland are represented by four formations of terrigenous and carbonate platform. From middle Oxfordian to early Kimmeridgian, a deltaic complex was bounded northward and eastward by a sandy strand plain with a barrier made of oolitic and bioclastic limestones. From late Kimmeridgian to early-middle Berriasian a carbonate rimmed shelf and ramp were developed and characterized by a fine grained sedimentation in very shallow water favouring the life of green algae and benthonic foraminifera. In the successive palaeogeographic reconstructions, isopic lines are mainly oriented N045-070 and N110-130 and interpreted as the result of the synsedimentary reactivation of deep seated inherited fault zones. Extension along the N045-070 trend seems to be linked with a general divergence between Africa and Iberia; the N110-130 trends are considered as transfert faults in the Mograbin Tethys transform system.

Abstract: The tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition in RbAlF4 at almost-equal-to 290 K has been investigated using x-ray scattering techniques. For temperatures above almost-equal-to 290 K, the wavevector dependence of the critical scattering at the X point was measured and was well described by an anisotropic Lorentzian, with no evidence for a second Lorentzian-squared component as has recently been reported close to the anti-ferrodistortive transition in several perovskites. The critical exponents describing the temperature dependence of the primary and secondary order parameters, inverse correlation length and static susceptibility were determined and found to be consistent with those expected for the isotropic n = 2, d = 3 model.

Abstract: We propose a new transect across the deep Sardinia Channel and the Tunisian Shelf, which respectively display a failed rift, at the SW tip of the Tyrrhenian marginal basin, and the buried extension of the Maghrebides collision belt. The structural relationships between these ensembles suggest they both developed during the Middle-Late Miocene drifting of the Calabria-Peloritan-Kabylia (CPK) island arc towards SE, just after the Early Miocene drifting of the Sardinia-Corsica bloc.

Abstract: High-resolution x-ray scattering experiments have been performed on single crystals of the incommensurate system Rb2ZnCl4 with emphasis on the kinetics of the lock-in phase transition. The nearly perfect single crystal (mosaic spread congruent-to 0.6 min) displayed a large hysteresis of 20 K. As the sample was cooled quickly from the paraelectric phase into the commensurate phase, via the incommensurate phase, the time evolution of the disappearance of the incommensurate peak intensity was monitored. The time becomes longer when the sample is quenched to lower than the lock-in temperature, which is contrary to the expected kinetic behaviour of nucleation and growth. The characteristic time of decay exhibits an Arrhenius-like behaviour with an energetic barrier E(b) to overcome of the order of 0.37 eV. The origin of the energetic barrier is interpreted in terms of an order-disorder process of the ZnCl4 tetrahedra network.

Abstract: Faraday rotation measurements, performed at 1150 nm wavelength on single-crystal platelets of CoFe2O4 with two different crystallographic orientations [100] and [111], are presented under magnetic fields up to 20 kOe, in the 5-580-K temperature range. A high anisotropy of magnetic origin is observed particularly at low temperatures (T < 230 K) where saturation cannot be obtained along the [111] direction in a 20-kOe magnetic field. The high Faraday rotation measured at 1150 nm and 300 K ( -5700-degrees/cm) is about twice that of Bi-substituted garnet films at this wavelength. The results are interpreted on the basis of contributions proportional to the magnetization of each magnetic sublattice.

Abstract: The conformation of monodisperse branched polymers in a good-solvent semi-dilute solution is investigated by small-angle neutron scattering. The results are compatible with a pair correlation function of Ornstein-Zernike type. The correlation length-xi is found to be inversely proportional to the concentration, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Semidilute solutions behave as closely packed systems of blobs of size-xi having locally the conformation of a single polymer (fractal dimension D equal to 2).

Abstract: To locally complement a simple graph F at one of its vertices v is to replace the subgraph induced by F on n(v) = {w : vw is an edge of F} by the complementary subgraph. Graphs related by a sequence of local complementations are said to be locally equivalent. We associate a system of equations with unknowns in GF(2) to any pair of graphs {F, F}, so that F is locally equivalent to F' if and only if the system has a solution. The equations are either linear and homogenous or bilinear, and we find a solution, if any, in polynomial time.

Abstract: Unsaturated polydienes with trichloromethyl pendant groups have been synthesized by tetrachloromethane addition to carbon-carbon double bonds of 1,4-polybutadiene, with dichloro tris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium II [Cl2Ru(PPh3)3] as catalyst. The study has been performed on a 1,4-polybutadiene (91 % of - 1,4 units) of low molecular weight (MBARn <10,000) and on model molecules (4-octene; 4,8-dodecadiene). The structural analysis can explain the chemical modification process. The main mechanism is a -1,2 addition including, after introduction of -CCl3 group, a cyclization step involving the carbon-carbon double bond of one of the side units. Besides the described mechanism and the 1:1 addition which is also noted, another secondary addition process leading to the formation of unsaturated adducts has been identified and described. From the cocatalyst point of view, the positive action of water on the yield of the chemical modification has been analysed and confirmed.

Abstract: In studying the effect of point defects on structural phase transitions in fluoroperovskites, we have characterized the Li defect in KZnF3. The dielectric-loss measurements on KZnF3:Li have revealed that the lithium defect possesses an electric dipole moment and therefore sits in an off-center position approximately 0.15 angstrom from a normal K site. Complementary ultrasonic measurements of the sound velocity indicate that Li constitutes a <100> orthorhombic defect. The delta-upsilon/upsilon results indicate that, similar to the KBr-KCN system, the strain ellipsoid is not an ellipsoid of revolution. The shape factors of the ellipsoid are found to be lambda-a - lambda-b approximately 0.013 and lambda-b - lambda-c approximately 0.006. This translates into two distinct relaxation processes at high and low temperatures, respectively, primarily associated with the reorientation of the major and minor axes of the ellipsoid. The dielectric-loss peak is then associated with the relaxation of the lithium defect between the three cube axes, i.e., the major-axis reorientation. The above interpretation is consistent with the large anharmonicity and anisotropy that have been found in the motion of the fluorine ions in KZnF3 and other related fluoroperovskites exhibiting a soft mode.

Abstract: Photocrosslinking of polymers, prepared from cinnamic acid derivatives, by chemical modification of poly(vinyl alcohol) or polycondensation of difunctional cinnamic acid derivatives has been studied. With Michler's ketone (sytem. name: 4,4'-bis(dimethylamino)benzophenone), crosslinking of copolymers is improved. 2-Nitrofluorene or 9-xanthenone have little effect on the crosslinking rate. Photocrosslinking of poly(alpha-cyano-4-vinylcinnamic acid), poly(ethyl alpha-cyano-4-vinylcinnamate) and their copolymers is enhanced in the presence of 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone, but the effect is lowered in the case of its acrylic esters or their (co)polymers.

Abstract: In order to improve the permanence of the plasticizer in a poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) compound we have studied the free radical polymerization and grafting of decyl methacrylate (DMA) onto PVC in the presence of a lead stabilizer. The influence of different parameters has been investigated and homogeneous PVC-g-PDMA copolymers have been obtained. Their molecular weights and the glass transition temperatures were consistent with the grafted nature of the copolymers.

Abstract: Within the external zone of the pan-African Dahomeyide orogenic belt, the epimetamorphic quartzites of the Atacora structural unit have many fractures. This fracturation led to identification of several paleostress fields corresponding to the main deformation phases, which are described by the authors.

A dextral S-C type mylonitic zone has been identified on the eastern border of the external zone.

Abstract: Pd(NO3)2(H2O)2 is orthorhombic: SG: Pbca, Z = 4, a = 5.0036(3)angstrom, b = 10.6073(7)angstrom, c = 11.7223(8)angstrom. The crystal structure was determined ab-initio from X-ray powder diffraction data and refined by the Rietveld method (37 parameters refined, 377 reflections, R(B) = 0.031, R(WP) = 0.079). Pd2+ adopts a square planar coordination, the nitrato-group is unidentate. The structure consists of isolated Pd(NO3)2(H2O)2 building units connected by hydrogen bonding in order to form two successive layers parallel to the ab plane. Layers are held together by van der Waals interactions.

Abstract: The Mossbauer spectrometry analysis of a diabase dyke from the Rocroi Massif reveals an internal iron oxidation-reduction gradient. Reduction increases from centre to walls; the borders are as much reduced as the surrounding pelites. This gradient could result from percolation of reducing fluids buffered within the surrounding rocks.

Abstract: The authors obtain the equilibrium figure of a cable fixed at its extremities (conditions of points and tangent) with a fixed length, under gravity and obeying coupled flexion and torsion laws of any form.

They use a finite element method with a circular element. The solution corresponds to a minimum of a nonquadratic function of variables coupled by nonlinear conditions.

The program applies an iterative process which at each stage uses a projection onto the space formed by the coupled variables. It brings in a correction, termed here the "rehanging correction" which firmly secures the fixation conditions of the cable.

In the first part, the solution of the plane (2 D) problem is explained with flexion law only.

Abstract: The modification reaction of poly(vinyl alcohol) with diethyl chlorophosphate and ethyl dichlorophosphate is studied in homogeneous phase using tertiary amines as catalysts. The structure of the modified polymers was determined by means of H-1 and P-31{H-1} nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as well as by chemical analysis. The structure of the polymers resulting from the reaction with diethyl chlorophosphate greatly depends on the reaction temperature as well as the catalyst. For lower reaction temperatures (less-than-or-equal-to 25-degrees-C) only acyclic phosphate ester groups were observed. The activation energy was found to be 24,9 kJ/mol. The presence of cyclic phosphate ester groups was found, when higher reaction temperatures (> 25-degrees-C) were used. These results can be interpreted considering the existence of transesterification reactions. Crosslinking structures were obtained in case ethyl dichlorophosphate was used instead of diethyl chlorophosphate.

Abstract: A formalism for calculating the shift of surface phonon dispersion curves due to the presence of defects in surface alloys is presented, using the matching technique and an effective field approach that goes beyond the virtual crystal approximation. Numerical results are examplified in the form of surface phonon dispersion curves for random distributions of defects, shifted as a function of defect concentrations, (0 less-than-or-equal-to c* less-than-or-equal-to 1), defect mass (light and heavy), and realistic model values for defect-crystal and defect-defect interactions. Significant shifts approximately 30% are found, that would be measurable within instrumental resolution of He atom scattering and EELS.

Abstract: Polymers containing cinnamic acid units were obtained by chemical modification of poly(vinyl alcohol) by cinnamic acid derivatives with a carbon-carbon double bond in para position. The reactivity of the acid chloride is lowered by the inductive effect of the double bond. Polycondensation of these derivatives, when difunctional, leads to low-molecular-weight polyamides and polyesters with good yields. The introduction of acrylic or methacrylic groups on photosensitizers has also been studied, leading to monomers which can be polymerized by a radical process, or copolymerized with the previous monomers, the polymer bearing then the photosensitizer and the cinnamic double bond on the same chain.

Abstract: The Peierls distorted quasi one-dimensional solids [Pt(II)(en)2][pt(IV)(en)2Br2](ClO4)4 and [Pt(II)(en)2][Pt(IV)(en)2l2](ClO4)4, referred to as PtBr and Ptl, respectively, are weaker CDW solids than the chloride analogue, PtCl. The resonance Raman (RR) data for PtBr exhibit a broad feature at 130 cm-1 that has been assigned to an electron bipolaron. Most of this signal is lost upon warming the sample from 12 to 50 K but can be largely recovered upon recooling. This demonstrates interconversion of defects that we suggest is "melting" of electron bipolarons into electron polarons. PtBr undergoes a first order phase change near room temperature (28.7-degrees-C) that dramatically effects the resonance Raman (RR) data acquired with excitation energies below the charge transfer band edge, i.e., the intragap defect absorption region. Crystals grown at 40-degrees-C exhibit higher intensity for defect vibrational features when compared to data for crystals grown at 5-degrees-C. Ptl cannot be probed within the defect region, but RR data acquired above the band edge indicate that ultragap defect states are present, which is consistent with 3/4-filled two band description.

Abstract: CsBaFe3F12 is isostructural with CsBaCr3F12 (monoclinic, C2/c, cell parameters at 130 K: a = 17.402(2) angstrom, b = 9.994(1) angstrom, c = 14.928(2) angstrom, beta = 124.76(2)degrees, Z = 4). The structure is built up from [Fe3F12] layers of vertex-sharing octahedra separated by cesium and barium ions. The magnetic susceptibility measurements show an antiferromagnetic behaviour below the Neel temperature (T(N) = (55 +/- 2)K) accurately determined by Mossbauer spectroscopy. The first calculated simulations of the magnetic structure give evidence for a magnetic cell (a, 3b, c) with a 120-degrees rotation angle of the spins which corresponds to a frustrated magnetic configuration.
