Abstract: The detailed behavior of the phase transitions was mapped out for the series RNiO3 as a function of the rare earth (R). A sharp insulator-metal transition is observed, which depends strongly on R. For small R it occurs at a higher temperature than the antiferromagnetic ordering (measured by muonspin relaxation). By increasing either the temperature or the size of R, an insulator-metal transition is observed, most probably caused by the closing of the charge-transfer gap, induced by an increase in the electronic bandwidth.

Abstract: In the R NiO3 series (R = La,Pr,Nd,Sm), the metal-insulator (M-I) transition temperature rises systematically as the size of the rare earth decreases and as the subsequent distortion from the ideal cubic perovskite increases. For R = La the system keeps its metallic character down to 1.5 K, while for R =Pr, Nd, and Sm electronic localization occurs at 135, 200, and 400 K, respectively. High-resolution neutron-powder-diffraction experiments have been performed to investigate the structural anomalies across the first-order M-I transition in the orthorhombic PrNiO3 and NdNiO3 compounds. The cell volume undergoes a subtle increase when the compounds become insulating, due to a slight increase of the Ni-O distances. This effect is accompanied by coupled tilts Of NiO6 octahedra, which imply changes in the Ni-O-Ni angles (DELTA-THETA-O-Ni-O almost-equal-to -0.5-degrees) governing the transfer integral between Ni e(g) and 0 2p orbitals. These changes are sterically driven by the observed increase of the nickel-oxygen distances (DELTA-d Ni-O almost-equal-to +0.004 angstrom) in the insulating (low-temperature) phase. The results of valence-bond calculations suggest the existence of Ni3+(d7) and R3+ states for nickel and rare earth.

Abstract: Experimental results are presented concerning the dynamic behavior of a cross-linking polymer near the gel point. Attention is focused on the exponents which govern the frequency dependence of the real and imaginary parts of the shear modulus. It is found that there is only one moment during the network formation at which these two exponents are identical, while this behavior is predicted during a time period including the gel point. Nevertheless, the exponent value found is not far from the percolation and Rouse model theories.

Abstract: Acetorphan is an orally active inhibitor of enkephalinase (EC 3.4.24.11) with antidiarrhoeal activity in rodents apparently through protection of endogenous enkephalins and a purely antisecretory mechanism. Its antidiarrhoeal activity in man was assessed in an experimental model of cathartic induced secretory diarrhoea as well as in acute diarrhoea. of presumed infectious origin. In six healthy volunteers receiving castor oil and pretreated with acetorphan or placebo in a crossover controlled trial, the drug significantly decreased the number and weight of stools passed during 24 hours. About 200 outpatients with severe acute diarrhoea (more than five stools per day) were included in a randomised double blind study of acetorphan against placebo. The significant antidiarrhoeal activity of acetorphan was established using a variety of criteria: (i) the duration of both diarrhoea and treatment were diminished; (ii) no acetorphan treated patient withdrew from the study whereas five dropped out because of worsening in the placebo group; (iii) the frequency of symptoms associated with diarrhoea - for example, abdominal pain or distension, nausea and anorexia - remaining after two weeks was nearly halved; (iv) using visual analogue scales acetorphan treatment was found more effective than placebo by both investigators and patients. There was statistically no significant difference between acetorphan and placebo in respect of side effects, particularly constipation, which often accompanies the antidiarrhoeal activity of mu opioid receptor agonists this difference is attributable to the lack of antipropulsive activity of acetorphan in man. The efficacy and tolerance of acetorphan suggest that enkephalinase inhibition may represent a novel therapeutic approach for the symptomatic management of acute secretory diarrhoea without impairing intestinal transit.

Abstract: New expressions are given that can be used instead of the phenomenological equations of Delany and Bazley. They provide similar predictions in the range of validity of these equations, and in addition are valid at low frequencies where the equations of Delany and Bazley provide unphysical predictions. These new expressions have been worked out by using the general frequency dependence of the viscous forces in porous materials proposed by Johnson et al. [J. Fluid Mech. 176, 379 ( 1987)], with a transposition carried out to predict the dynamic bulk modulus of air. The model used suggests how sound propagation in fibrous materials can depend both on the diameter of the fibers and on the density of the material.

Abstract: Photoinduced defects in the bromide-bridged platinum linear chain [Pt(en)2][Pt(en)2Br2](ClO4)4 (PtBr, where en=ethylenediamine) yield Raman, absorption, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals that have been examined as a function of temperature in order to determine the kinetics of the decay of these metastable defects in an intermediate-strength low-dimensional charge-density-wave (CDW) solid. Both diamagnetic and paramagnetic defects are photogenerated with the initial excitonic transient primarily decaying to form electron bipolarons and hole polarons. The photogenerated Raman signal is indicative of the former and the EPR signal of the latter. The type and stability of these photoinduced defects are dependent on the sample history, with PtBr crystals grown in the orthorhombic phase (above 30-degrees-C) leading to greater variety and stability of defects as compared with those photoinduced in crystals grown in the monoclinic phase (below 10-degrees-C). The temperature dependence of the photogenerated spectroscopic signals reveals complicated decay routes, with the eventual recombination of valence defects mediated by lattice pinning potentials of various strengths, interconversion of defect states (including the possible "melting" of electron bipolarons into electron polarons) and a strengthening of the CDW as the crystals are warmed toward room temperature. The observation of bromide hyperfine splitting in the EPR data and the reversible intensity changes in the Raman defect signals indicates that these defects are spatially quite disperse, with ten or greater platinum sites revealed in the EPR signal, and demonstrates that the weakening of the CDW in PtBr relative to the strong CDW solid PtCl has a significant effect on the ground- and defect-state properties.

Abstract: We determined the conditions of preparation and growth of pure and lead doped BaLiF3 crystals for a simple pulling equipment without diameter control. We utilized an empirical step temperature program which is compared with a theoretical non-linear program proposed to BaLiF3 crystals growth. To improve the optical quality of crystals obtained we realized a study of the macroscopic shape of the growing interface and growth direction. The distribution coefficient of Pb in BaLiF3 was estimated as 0.05.

Abstract: The effect of disordered interfaces on the phase diagrams of a bilayer A and B, spin-1/2 system, is analyzed, where A and B possess different bulk properties. An effective field theory is employed. In particular, the mean bulk-like transition temperature T(c) of the considered system is calculated in general as a function of the different exchange constants of the system and as a function of the concentration p in the randomly disordered interface layer A(p)B1-p. It is shown that the existence of disordered interfaces may severely affect the phase diagrams of T(c).

Abstract: Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the kinetics of the free-radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in toluene, initiated with azobisisobutyronitrile at 70-degrees-C. The decrease in the intensity of the 1636 cm-1 C=C stretching band compared with a solvent band as an internal standard allows an accurate determination of the rate of conversion of monomers to polymeric chains. A careful quantitative study of the evolution of the C=O stretch band profile, interpreted in terms of intra-chain dipole-dipole interactions, gives a similar dependence for the conversion.

Abstract: The results of "in situ" measurements of the electrochemical and optical properties of tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films obtained by vacuum evaporation, anodic oxidation of W and chemical vapor deposition, are presented. Optical measurements were performed at lambda = 633 nm with a He-Ne laser. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry have been used as electrochemical techniques. The determination of the variation of the chemical potential of the inserted species (ions and electrons) during insertion into the oxide has been carried out using an electrochemical method. This variation is of great importance in electrochromic kinetics. Based on the assumption of a double injection of electrons and ions into the oxide and on experimental observations, we propose a model to describe the electrochromic phenomena and the different reactions leading to the coloration of the oxide. From this model and from the experimental curves, J = f(t) and OD = f(t), the ionic diffusion coefficient into the oxide is obtained.

The electrode-electrolyte interface was also investigated in this study. We used the technique of impedance spectroscopy to analyse this interface. Both charge transfer and diffusion coefficient have been determined from the Nyquist diagrams. The values obtained were in good agreement with those obtained from the above proposed model.

Abstract: Intramolecular oxidative couplings of phenylalkyltetrahydroisoquinoline precursors in aporphinic and homoaporphinic alkaloids by using RuO2,2H2O in fluoro acidic media were performed. A comparative study of our reagent with TTFA has been made with different precursors. The procedure was also extended to the synthesis of one dibenzazocinic alkaloid. Then, we attempted to synthetize the azafluoranthenic ring, using phenolic and non phenolic isoquinoline precursors.

Abstract: The synthesis of a new monomer holding a carboxylate function and a thiirane ring, is described in this study. Its homopolymerization through thiirane ring opening, using as initiator, tetramethylammonium (di)thiobenzoate in DMF and affording polysulfides with pendent carboxylate groups is investigated. The copolymers with methyl thiirane are identified by 13C NMR spectroscopy. The corresponding polyacids can be easily obtained through saponification.

Abstract: Both the temperature and the pressure dependences of the b4(0) spin-Hamiltonian parameter for RbCaF3, CsCaF3, RbCdF3 and TlCdF3 doped with Gd3+ have been reported. On the assumption that b4(0) depends on the metal-ligand distance according to a law b4(0) is similar to r(k) the following values of k were obtained: -20.9, -27.1, -24.9 and -29.3, respectively. It was found that the temperature dependence of b4(0) is predominantly caused by spin-phonon interactions which were estimated to contribute about 68% to the total dependence observed. The effectiveness of some theoretical models predicting the role of vibronic contributions is also discussed.

Abstract: The crystal structure of BaTiOF4 has been determined by X-Ray diffraction data from a single crystal grown by hydrothermal synthesis. The symmetry is orthorhombic: Pbcm, Z = 4, a = 5.1719(2) angstrom, b = 13.7555(7) angstrom, c = 5.5178(2) angstrom (R = 0.0264 and R(w) = 0.0313 for 1030 independent reflections). The structure, characterized by infinite kinked chains of cis connected TiO2F4 octahedra, running along [001], is also described in terms of stacking of quasi hexagonal compact planes of Ba2+, O2- and F- ions. Ba atoms, located in a classical cubooctahedral coordination (12), connect the chains to one another. The location of the O2- anions is discussed using the bond valence method.

This structure is compared to those of the A(II)M(III)F5 compounds (BaGaF5, BaAlF5, BaMnF5, SrNiF5).

Abstract: A film of cellulose acetate was submitted to a cold plasma of tetrafluoromethane or of sulfur hexafluoride. The interactions of these cold plasmas and cellulose acetate lead to a material whose surface has been modified by fluorination. Comparison of CF4 or SF6 plasma treatment shows that fluorine atoms provided by each-kind of plasma induce degradation and grafting of fluorocarbon radicals on the surface. As a consequence, the surface energy decreases and offers the possibility of a better response of plasma-modified cellulose derivatives used as biomaterials (e.g., hemodialysis membrane).

Abstract: The crystal structure of Li2PdP2O7 has been determined from X-ray powder diffraction data using direct methods combined with Rietveld profile refinement principles. The cell is orthorhombic (Space group Imma, Z = 4) with a = 12.5858(9) angstrom, b = 7.4955(5) angstrom, c = 5.8116(4) angstrom. The refinement of 25 parameters using 237 reflections leads to R(B) = 0.051 and R(WP) = 0.126. The structure of Li2PdP2O7 consists of alternative (1 0 0) stacking of layers containing LiO6 octahedra, and ribbons formed by P2O7 groups with twofold internal symmetry and PdO4 square planes. In the layers, oxygens exhibit [3.4.5.4,(3.4.5(2))2] plane nets, but in contrast to Na2PdP2O7, the cationic network in the layers does not adopt a honeycomb plane net. LiO6 octahedra layers can be described as infinite rutile chains running along the c axis, connected one to the other by corners along b, leading then to a pseudo-ReO3 network.

Abstract: (-)-alpha-Conidendrin 1 was synthesized according to a general reaction scheme that could be applied to other retrolignans as well. Thus, treatment of the optically active beta-benzyl-gamma-butyrolactone (R)-(+)-4 with NBS, followed with benzyl alcohol selectively introduced a benzyloxy group in the benzylic position and afforded the mixture of epimers 7. alpha-Alkylation of the lithium enolate of the corresponding silyl ethers 10, with O-benzylvanillyl bromide 11, gave the trans disubstituted lactones 13 (2 epimers). Catalytic hydrogenolysis (Pd-C) of 13 selectively split the aryl benzyl ether linkage, and gave the compounds 14. Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts cyclization of the latter, using the benzyloxy group as the leaving group, was induced with BF3.Et2O and afforded (-)-alpha-conidendrin 1 in 36% overall yield from methyl alpha-vanillylhemisuccinate (R)-(+)-17.

Abstract: The F and CF2-CF2+ excited states have been detected by emission spectroscopy in CF4RF plasmas used for TMPTA polymerization. These excited states are related through electron collision to F and CF2 ground states. The temporal variation of the F and CF2-CF2+ radiative states near the substrate reveals that the F atoms disappear first by incorporation in the monomer during the polymerization phase and, then, by a third body recombination process enhanced by the polymer surface. The CF2-CF2+ radiative states are varying as the inverse of the F states indicating a strong destruction mechanism of CF2 radicals by F atoms.

Abstract: To determine their magnetic texture, Mossbauer spectrometry is applied to metallic amorphous wires obtained by the in-rotating-water spinning process. Inhomogeneous thickness effects associated with a magnetic texture govern the line intensities of the Mossbauer spectrum. So we have developed a method which consists in simulating standard densities of resonant absorption from a powder Mossbauer spectrum. Then, the fitting of the experimental spectra leads to the values of N(z), N(r) and N(t) representing, respectively, the mean discrete axial, radial and tangential spin populations. Finally, the analysis on wires of different diameters shows that the magnetic texture is preferentially radial (axial) in the skin (bulk).

Abstract: Real time dielectric measurements are reported on the cure of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and diamino diphenyl sulphone (DDS) over a temperature range from 393 to 443 K. The measurements were performed over a frequency range from 10(-1) to 10(5) Hz and spectra were collected at regular intervals during the period of cure. Analysis of the dielectric data was carried out in two parts; firstly, consideration of low frequency relaxation which dominates the initial stages of the cure and, secondly, analysis of the longer time higher frequency dipolar relaxation processes which can be associated with vitrification of the matrix. After cure has been completed a dipolar relaxation process remains which is associated with dipolar reorientation of the pendant hydroxyl group generated during the course of cure.

Further insight is gained into the nature of the processes occurring during the cure of the matrix by a comparison of dielectric data with mechanical and thermal data obtained using a curometer. A good correlation appears between the various transition points identified from the different measurements. Comparison of the data from the various methods and also that from previous workers is made using a TTT diagram.

Abstract: The filamentous and branched thallus of Antithamnion plumula is constitued of two different kinds of branches with apical growth: the cladomial axes with a continuous or indefinite growth, and the pleuridia with a limited growth. The size of the pleuridia depends on their position with respect to the lateral cladomial axes.

The growth kinetics of 35 pleuridia were analysed using Nelder's generalized logistics. Each sigmoidal curve, which was divided into four growth stages from the instantaneous acceleration variations, was thus characterized by ten kinetic parameters: lengths at the time of the changes in growth stage, durations of the growth stages and maximum growth rate.

The data showed that all curves displayed a marked left dissymmetry which reflected the brevity of the accelerated growth stage (1/5 of total growth duration). The maximum acceleration stage occurs between the individualization of the pleuridial initial cell and the first mitosis. Previously known experimental data were related to this quantitative result so as to put forward a biological meaning. New research pathways were suggested.

The kinetic parameters investigated were used for a classification of pleuridia. The smallest ones displayed the slowest growth: they needed twice more time to reach their maximum size than the largest pleuridia whose growth was the fastest. This association of traits was related to the occurrence of acropetal fluxes along the main axis of the thallus.

Abstract: The amorphous-to-crystalline transformation of the as-received Metglas Fe78B13Si9 (Metglas(R) 2605S2) was studied by transmission and reflection Mossbauer spectroscopy in order to compare shiny and dull surfaces and bulk crystallization mechanisms. In agreement with previous results, the onset of crystallization occurs on both surfaces, simultaneously to the out-of-plane anisotropy. Higher kinetics of crystallization is observed at the dull surface. Then, primary and eutectic crystallization processes seem to be evidenced for the shiny and dull surfaces respectively. It is proposed that these different phenomena originate from the presence of structural and chemical inhomogeneities induced during the solidification process.

Abstract: Prognosis of esophageal cancer is very poor. Five-year survival does not exced 20% after radical surgery, the best available treatment. Unfortunately, only 40% of the patients are amenable to surgery because of poor general status and/or locoregional extension. Adjuvant treatment did not yield survival improvement. Preoperative radiotherapy (three randomized trials) or postoperative radiotherapy (one randomized trial) showed only a decrease of regional relapses, perhaps only for the nodes negative patients. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy obtains some interesting response rate (20 - 60%), but there has been no evidence yet for survival improvement. Recently, promising results were presented after combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In this paper, we review the present status of combined treatment for esophageal cancer. Our multicentric group (OSOF) is now completing a phase II trial, that should soon form the basis for a phase III prospective study.

Abstract: In an attempt to capture the essence of reverberation, the wave equation in a room has been developed into a statistical process that exhibits all the properties of reverberation: the distribution of the number of reflections along one sound ray travelling through the room. This development makes use of three domains of mathematics: thc theory of characteristics, that allows a rigorous definition of sound rays from the wave equation, the theory of ergodic dynamical systems, such as billiards, the leads to a unique reverberation time, and the theory of probabilities, that gives the most general form of the reverberation process. Ultimately, a generalization of Sabine's formula is proposed.

The use of mathematical theories makes it possible to state the hypotheses under which reverberation is defined. These hypotheses amount to two: the limit of high frequencies, necessary to define sound rays; and diffusion. The latter is redefined as equivalent to mixing, together with a method for computing a diffusion index: the mixing time. Finally, the consequences of relaxing the hypothesis of diffusion are analysed.

Abstract: We discuss the properties of the solution of polymeric clusters obtained near the gelation threshold by measuring their structure factor using small-angle neutron and light scattering experiments. The distribution of randomly branched clusters, described by percolation theory, leads to a hierarchical interpenetration of clusters. We point out the existence of a length dependent on concentration and characterizing the crossover between fractal and homogeneous structures. Intensity and concentration reduced variables allow us to plot a single master curve for both neutron and light scattering results. The asymptotic behaviours obey scaling laws and are analysed considering recent theoretical arguments.

Abstract: Six young-adult patients (19- to 32-years-old) are described : 3 men with temporally localized systemic vasculitis (thromboangiitis obliterans 2, Churg-Strauss angiitis 1) and 3 patients (2 men, 1 woman) with isolated temporal arteritis. Temporal arteritis in subjects under 40 years of age consists of either a temporal localization of systemic vasculitis (thromboangiitis obliterans or Buerger's disease, Churg-Strauss angiitis or polyarteritis nodosa) or a distinct entity of which only 12 biopsy-proven cases have been reported to date. The latter is differentiated from temporal (giant cell) arteritis of the older patient by a higher incidence in men, and the absence or rarity of general symptoms, ocular complications and an accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Two types of temporal arteritides in young adults seem to be distinguishable : an asymptomatic form with an isolated temporal nodule and a more symptomatic one. In some cases, temporal artertitis in young adults corresponds to a unique entity << juvenile temporal arteritis >>, which seems to be different from Takasayu's arteritis, localized forms of polyarteritis nodosa and Kimura's disease. Although its treatment remains difficult to define, therapy of the symptomatic form could include steroids, whereas the asymptomatic one seems to require only simple monitoring.

Abstract: The Raman spectra of the trigonal LiCaAlF6 crystal were recorded st room temperature and 10 K. Three A1g and eight E(g) Raman lines are expected according to group theory. Based on the polarized Raman spectra, symmetry assignments were made for the 11 predicted Raman-active phonon modes. Throughout the temperature range studied, no drastic evolution of the Raman spectra was observed, which suggests that there is no structural phase transition in LiCaAlF6. Analysis of the Raman spectra was made by comparison with previous studies of several crystal fluorides such as Li2ZrF6.

The crystal structure have been solved from single crystal X-ray diffraction data (R=0.022 and R(w)=0.026). The structure is built up from [Zr2F11]n3- layers formed by corner sharing of [Zr4F24]8- planar units (built from 4 edge sharing [ZrF8]4- square antiprisms); the shifted layers are connected via [LiF4]3- tetrahedra and [BaF12]10- polyhedra. Abstract: Thin films of transition metal oxyhydroxides containing W and Nb (HNbWO6, H2O) or Ti (H2Ti3O7) Obtained by 'soft chemistry' have been prepared using vacuum evaporation. These films exhibit electrochromic behavior in aqueous acid electrolyte and in non-aqueous electrolyte such as 1M LiClO4/propylene carbonate. It was found that the coloration efficiency of the films may be improved by coevaporating mixtures of these two oxyhydroxides. Moreover, the presence of Ti and Nb in the films has been shown to be directly connected to the nature of the oxyhydroxides precursors.

Abstract: The crystal structure of Li3ThF7 has been refined by Rietveld analysis of neutron powder diffraction data at several temperatures. Li3ThF7 exhibits a phase transition between 295 and 350K, and becomes tetragonal (P4/ncc). Moreover, Li3ThF7 becomes ionic conductor above 500K. Fourier maps revealed that conducting lithium ions move in the a,b plane at the surface of a double layer, and, to a lower extent, between two double layers.

Abstract: The consequences of the convention associated with the contraction of the indices of the elastic constant tensor components C(ijkl) are discussed. It is shown that, in order to be handled like the matrix of an operator, the elastic constant table must be written with new conventions : C(alpha-beta)u = C(ijkl) if alpha, beta = 1, 2, 3, C(alpha-beta)u = square-root 2 C(ijkl) if (alpha = 1, 2, 3, and beta = 4, 5, 6) or (alpha = 4, 5, 6 and beta = 1, 2, 3), C(alpha-beta)u = 2 C(ijkl) if alpha, beta = 4, 5, 6. The C(alpha-beta)u are the components of 6 x 6 table [C(u)]. Using for the strains epsilon(ij) the convention u(alpha) = epsilon(ij) if i = j and u(alpha) = square-root 2 epsilon(ij) if i not-equal j, the usual for E = 1/2 C(alpha-beta)u u(alpha) u(beta) for the elastic energy is preserved. It is shown that the terms C(alpha)BAR of the elastic energy written in a diagonal form E = 1/2 SIGMA(alpha=1)6 C(alpha)BAR[E(alpha)]2 where the E(alpha) are the symmetry-adapted strains) are the eigenvalues of the table [C(u)] that can be called matrix of the elastic constants ; the << eigenvalues >> of the elastic constant table defined with the usual conventions do not lead to the right diagonal form in the cases of the tetragonal 4/m, 4BAR, 4 groups and in the cases of the trigonal groups. This result has consequences in the studies of the proper and pseudo-proper ferroelastic phase transitions since they are associated with the softening of one of the C(alpha)BAR. Some arguments showing the advantage of an extension of the conventions proposed in this paper to other kinds of tensors are given.

Abstract: The Langhian basalts near Dellys (Great Kabylia, Algeria) are interbedded in neogene "post-nappes" formations. The microtectonic analysis of the many streaked slickensides in these basalts shows a multidirectional distensive period. This is probably the first tectonic event after the main overthrustings, here considered to be contemporaneous with the opening and filling of the "post-nappes" Tizi-Ouzou basin. Some of the later compressive events, identified in the Tizi-Ouzou basin, are also detected in the basalts.

Abstract: The layered compound KFeF4 that exhibits a structural phase transition at T(c) congruent-to 380 K from Bmmb symmetry (phase I) to Pcmn symmetry (phase 11) is studied as a function of temperature by polarized Raman scattering. All the Raman lines are attributed on the basis of (i) symmetry analysis of the normal modes of vibration in the aristotype phase (phase I) and the compatibilities relations with the symmetries in phase II; (ii) comparison with RbFeF4 in which the phonon spectrum can be calculated. The phase transition is clearly associated with a soft mode but a residual Raman signal is still observed above T(c); this is attributed to the existence of a disordered phase. Two additional modes exhibit a soft behaviour connected with a (virtual) martensitic transformation.

Abstract: The need for polymers with various specific properties has lead to development of surface treatment. Chemical or mechanical methods are well developed and, for most polymers, adhesion to metal or an adhesive is increased. This paper deals with the activation of polycarbonate, polyamide-66 and polysulphone surface by cold plasma treatment, followed by metallization (deposition of nickel, copper, chromium) through chemical attack in appropriate baths. Many experiments both on activation and on metallization have been performed. For plasma treatment, dependence on gas nature, discharge power and duration of treatment has been studied; for metallization, various industrial baths have been tested. Adhesion measurements indicate that metallization of plasma modified polycarbonate and polyamide was not successful. Polysulphone has been metallized, leading to a peeling strength of 300 gcm-1. Treatments with nitrogen or Ar/O2 plasma with 2 min duration, and with CO2 plasma (duration: 5 min) are efficient. Drastic activation leads to chemical or physical damage of the polymer surface, prejudicial to adhesion.

Abstract: The magnetic properties of the two-dimensional antiferromagnet KFeF4 have been studied by inelastic neutron-scattering. The spin-wave dispersion curve is measured in the (hhl) plane at 15K. The existence of a gap (0.65THz) is confirmed. The dispersion along the [00-xi] direction, normal to FeF6 sheets is smaller than the experimental accuracy; on the other hand a strong dispersion is observed along the [xi-xi-0] direction. The dispersion curves are well described by a simple spin-wave theory (H(E) = 211 T, H(A) = 1.3 T, \J\ = 9.8 cm-1 alpha = 6.2 x 10(-3)).

The beta-NaSrCrF6 structure is characterized by isolated [CrF6]3- octahedra and is related to that of NaSrAlF6. In the NaSrFeF6 structure, sodium and iron ions are located in octahedral sites whereas strontium ions show a sevenfold coordination. Infinite chains of edge-sharing octahedra [Na2Fe2F16]n8n- along the b-axis are interconnected by vertices to build up a three-dimensional network, the strontium atoms being located between the chains. An isotypic series of NaSrFeF6 (M3+ = Ti, V, Ga) is evidenced. Finally the NaSrFeF6 structure is compared to those of A2MF6 compounds.

Abstract: A one-dimensional model is presented for surface phonon scattering into surface phonon channels by atomic inhomogeneities along a high symmetry direction in a solid surface. The model yields characteristic resonances over the full Brillouin zone of the model linear chain, for a monoatomic step and an adatom, at the limit of low concentrations where the approximation of an isolated inhomogeneity holds. Additional resonances are found near the step edges for a symmetric double step, these indicate weak localization of surface phonons on a slightly disordered surface. The theoretical results can, in principle, be tested by electron energy loss spectroscopy and He atom surface scattering.

Abstract: "Pure" and mixed Bridgman crystals Rb2ZnCl4 and [Rb(1-x)Kx]2ZnCl4, doped in the melt with Mn2+ ions, are studied by E.P.R.and X-rays. In the multisoliton regime,we measure the density of the Mn2+ ions which occupy nearly the same sites as in the commensurate phase, and we obtain an estimation of the thermal evolution of the soliton density Ns(T).Nevertheless, these local measurements do not give any information about their long range ordering and involve measurements on the site occupied by an impurity. Therefore, using samples cleaved from the same Bridgman batch, only doped with Mn2+ ions, we compare the results of X-rays and E.P.R. investigations .

Abstract: Transmission of plane sound waves through elastic or porous layers involves longitudinal and transverse waves and can be described by equivalent multiport circuits. Different ports on each face of the layer are related to the normal and the tangential strains and velocities. The form of the impedance matrix of the circuits indicates that the coupling between normal and tangential conjugate variables is antireciprocal. This is due to the fact that the angle of incidence changes sign under time reversal.

Abstract: A long tradition of research has now established that early reflections improve speech intelligibility: there exists an integration time of about 35 ms within which all reflections contribute to increasing the loudness of the direct sound and thus improve the speech intelligibility. Yet, careful review of the literature shows that most investigations were carried out in the absence of background noise.

A series of tests was set up to check whether the "35 ms fusion" rule still holds in the presence of background noise. The listening conditions are similar to those found in a car cabin (low-frequency noise, strong reflection arriving within 10 ms). The tests reveal that the actual word spoken and the speaker's voice dominate over other sources of influence on the results, even for a reflection following 5 ms after the direct sound. Although its energy is actually integrated with that of the direct sound, an early reflection never improves the intelligibility to the same extent as simply raising the voice to the same level.

A second series of tests was therefore conducted to investigate the word effect: it was found that this effect is also listener dependent, but no physical correlate could explain it. Nevertheless, the experiments agree in showing that the "fusion" rule does not hold in the presence of background noise.

Abstract: The tectonic evolution of the Appalachian platform is still not well understood. The Montreal area, however, shows evidence of major fracturing events, some of which cut the Cretaceous intrusions. The history of the different stress events recorded in the platform was studied by the analysis of brittle faults and dykes, followed by the calculation, by way inversion of tensors, of the corresponding stresses. The tectonics represented is polyphased and its analysis allows a historical reconstitution of the carbonate and flyschoid platform since the Lower Paleozoic. Five tectonic stages are recognized, corresponding to the major geodynamic events characteristics of northeast North America: (i) early north-south distensional events; (ii) Appalachian compression in a west-northwest-east-southeast direction; (iii) terminal Appalachian compression oriented north-northest-south-southwest; (iv) Cretaceous north-south distension; (v) a Cenozoic to Recent compression in a northwest-southeast direction.

Abstract: In order to obtain compounds similar to EDTA and DTPA, with properties appropriate for medical use, the synthesis of chelating molecules containing aminoacetic groups was investigated. This chelating structure was obtained on organic molecules containing heavy groups (for example on chlorambucil) or on reactive molecules (bis 2-chloroethyl amine) allowing the fixation of a polymerizable group. Chelating ability was investigated with technetium-99m (scintillation camera imaging) and gadolinium (for NMR).

Abstract: A measuring probe has been built that is comprised of an electrostatic transducer as a source and two receiving microphones. This probe allows measurements of acoustic impedance to be made over a wide range of values and over a larger frequency range than hitherto possible in waveguides by separating the contributions of the plane and first helical modes to the impedance.

Abstract: An exact evaluation of the acoustic field created by a point source in a semi-infinite fluid above a layer of another fluid of finite thickness is worked out. A method of measuring the characteristic impedance and the propagation constant in a layer by a two-microphone technique is presented. An example is given where the semi-infinite fluid is air and the layer is a fluid equivalent to a porous material.

Abstract: Faraday rotation measurements have been performed on single crystals of CoFe2O4, CoFe2-xAlxO4 (x = 0.27) and Co1-yCdyFe2O4 (y = 0.25) at 1150 nm wavelength as a function of temperature (5 less-than-or-equal-to T less-than-or-equal-to 580 K). The magnetic field up to 2 T was applied along two crystallographic orientations [100] and [111]. Results show a very strong anisotropy of magnetic origin due to Co2+ and/or tetrahedral site occupancy. Crystal structure determinations show that Al3+ substitution in pure CoFe2O4 increases the tetrahedral Co2+ amount, leading to a strong decrease of the absolute FR.

Abstract: We report the observation of one-magnon and two-magnon Raman scattering in the two-dimensional antiferromagnet KFeF4. The magnetic exchange and the anisotropy field values are derived from the experimental data. The exchange interaction slightly but significantly differs from the measured one using inelastic neutron scattering. The high value of the anisotropy field, compared to the predicted one, is confirmed.

Abstract: Background. Much progress has been made in the last ten years in the treatment of non Hodgkin's lymphomas by increasing drug schedules and by using non cross-resistant regimens.

Methods. So we decided in 1984 to test a new multiple drug procotol (Tours-Poitiers-Limoges = TPL protocol) which used a sequence of three courses of classical high-dose induction therapy, three courses of consolidation therapy using Teniposide, Cytosine Arabinoside, L Asparaginase and high-dose Methotrexate, and three courses of late intensification using the same drugs as induction therapy.

Results. Thirty-eight patients younger than 60 years were included. Complete remission was obtained in 27 patients (71%). The median follow-up was 3 years and 9 months with one third of CR patients having been followed beyond 5 years. Seven patients relapsed (26% of CR patients) and one died of toxicity in complete remission. At present 22 patients (58%) are in complete remission, 19 in first CR, 1 in first CR after allogenic bone marrow transplantation, and 2 in second prolonged CR after autologous bone marrow transplantation. The median survival time is 48 months and the actuarial disease-free survival curve seems to have a plateau at 48.5%, with no relapse after 24 months.

Conclusions. These results confirm the efficacy of alternating high-dose conventional chemotherapy in the treatment of intermediate and high-grade NHL, with about half of the patients being cured. However, more intensive chemotherapy regimens are needed to improve cure rates.

Abstract: Seventy three venous access ports of the same type have been implanted recently in our hospital. We have observed two cases of catheter's rupture. Both accidents show a lot of similarities: material of the same trade mark; same way of implantation: right subclavian vein; rupture before one year; rupture at the point of entry of the subclavian vein; migration of the distal part of catheter; withdrawal of this part by right femoral vein's catheterism. Both broken catheters and another not broken (implanted during more than one year) were tested. It appears that those catheters were weakened, especially around the rupture. The reason is the long-standing compression of the catheter at the narrow space between clavicle and first rib. Then, the rupture of this weakened catheter could have been produced by the high pressure due to injection with small syringes.

Abstract: We consider a generalization of finite matroids called delta matroids. This structure has been introduced simultaneously by A. Bouchet and, with pseudomatroids, by R. Chandrasekaran and S. N. Kabadi. It turns out that generalized matroids of E. Tardos and the metroids of A. Dress and T. Havel are just special cases of delta matroids. Let delta = (V, F) be a delta matroid. For any F is-an-element-of F, the fundamental graph G(F)delta is the simple graph on the vertex set V whose edge set is {xy:x not-equal y, F triangle {x, y} is-an-element-of F}. Given an even delta matroid-delta and an element F of F, A. Bouchet proved that G(F)delta is bipartite if and only if delta is equivalent to a matroid. We extend this result to general delta matroids in two natural ways, and we characterize the corresponding delta matroids by excluded minors.

Abstract: An accurate method for the determination of the in-plane shear modulus G(xy) of machine-made paper is given here. This work is the extension of an earlier paper, where it was shown that G(xy) and the in-plane Poisson ratio upsilon(xy) are recoverable from measurements of the Young modulus E(THETA) and the shear modulus G(THETA) conducted at various orientation angles. However, reliable values for G(xy) are very difficult to obtain. Here we show that G(xy) can be accurately extracted with only a few data for E versus orientation angle plus one good value for upsilon(xy). The latter may be measured by a laser speckle photography technique. The influence of the number of data, the precision of these data, and the angular spacing between data points are described by numerical simulations based on large perturbation analysis. Also, a simple criterion is established for the optimum angular region (the so-called minimum error boundary) where the needed measurements should be performed to achieve the very best accuracy in the determination Of G(xy).

Abstract: An osmotic stress induced by addition of 86 mM NaCl in root medium enhanced a transient increase of transpiration rate of the rye in presence of oxygen both in light and in darkness. When the shoot was swept by moist N2 and 15 Pa CO2 atmosphere, photosynthetic oxygen produced in light was sufficient to permit an increase of transpiration flux after the stress application. In darkness and under anoxia (N2 + 15 Pa CO2), osmotic stress application did not induce stomatal supraopening in dry or moist atmosphere. Oxygen was not requisite to stomatal closure after osmotic stress application.

Abstract: We report on the pulsed neutron powder diffraction study of the high and low temperature phases of [Pt(en)2][Pt(en)2Cl2](ClO4)4 (where en=ethylenediamine), referred to as PtCl, that undergoes a structural phase transition at 19.8-degrees-C. It is shown that the high and low temperature phases are orthorhombic and monoclinic, respectively. The transition is associated with a very large shear (3.9-degrees) and the translational group of the low temperature phase is not a subgroup of the high temperature phase translational group ; this supports the first order character proposed earlier.

Abstract: This work is concerned with the modeling of percussive acoustical signals, and focuses mostly on the sound's non-stationary onset. The original signal is modeled by a resonating filter fed with a short excitation-signal. The resonating filter reflects the acoustical properties of the instrument's body (frequencies and damping factors of the vibration modes), and the excitation signal models the way the instrument was set into vibration, The resonating filter is calculated by use of a cumulated time-frequency representation of the original signal. The excitation signal is obtained by use of inverse filtering with an optional regularization procedure. Analysis examples are given and some applications are proposed and discussed.

Abstract: We present a family of resonators which have harmonic resonance frequencies but in which some resonances are missing. Each resonator is composed by a succession of N cylinders of the same length. The cross-section area of each cylinder is equal to i(i+1)/2 times the cross-section area of the first cylinder (for i=1 to N) and the last cylinder in open. All the resonance frequencies are harmonic with F1 the lowest resonance frequency. However all multiples of (N+1)F1 correspond to antiresonance frequencies.

Abstract: First we present the equipment used for objective measurements both in the hall and in the 1:50 model, the accuracy of the measurements, and the results of the measurements. Examination of these results lead us to distinguish between two possible uses of models in room acoustics corresponding to two levels of precision in model realisation.

Results of the subjective tests carried out in the theatre are looked at in terms of their correlations with objective measurements, and observations on the relevance of such tests for characterising a hall are derived. Specially, we believe the audition-vision interaction can't be ignored.

Abstract: We consider a model of "small diffusion" which is applied to the continuous time autoregressive process. This model is defined by the stochastic differential equation with delays. We describe the asymptotics of the nonparametric estimate of the trend coefficient and then apply this results to the minimum distance parameter estimate of the delays.

Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to discuss some aspects of the methods that are most appropriate for the clinical assessment of new expectorants. Expectorants are drugs devised to help in the removal of bronchial secretions. The evaluation of these drugs is aimed at demonstrating, in controlled trials, their efficacy, safety and, if possible, mechanism of action. Unfortunately, there is no universally accepted assessment technique available. Evaluation of symptoms with the use of self-reported measures is imprecise. Studies of quality of life can assist as a means of assessing the usefulness of this class of drug for patients. Lung function tests evaluate only the possible indirect effects of expectorants; the changes observed are often minor and they do not correlate with other methods of evaluation. Mucociliary clearance studies evaluate bronchial drainage by mucociliary transport and cough. They are a useful pharmacological approach but they cannot replace therapeutic trials. In vitro and ex vivo studies of bronchial secretion, while improving knowledge of the mechanisms of bronchial secretion, fail to predict the modifications of bronchial drainage produced in vivo by cough or mucociliary transport. To be considered efficient, expectorants should not only ease the removal of bronchial secretions, but also improve the patient's condition for the duration of treatment.

Abstract: New u.v.-absorbing stabilizers for polymers have been synthesized by using cooligomerization. The u.v.-absorbing structure (2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone) has been converted into a monomer by reacting it with acryloyl chloride; the reactivity of the resulting monomer has been studied and cooligomerization condition have been optimized when using n-butyl mercaptan as transfer agent.

Abstract: In the field of old recordings restoration, we compare two interpolation methods in order to remove degradations causes by impulse noises. The first one, worked out by Janssen et al, is the adaptive interpolation. The autoregressive model on which it is based, is assumed to be a good model for the signal. The second one based on wavelet transform has been developped by using an orthogonal function base. The interpolation is performed not on the signal but on the wavelet coefficients. In the present paper we evaluate and compare these methods in terms of objective criteria. The database used for the evaluation consist in real and synthetic signals with different signal to noise ratio corresponding to many situations encountered in the field of old recordings restoration.

Abstract: Li+ ions can be exchanged for protons in Li2TiTeO6 (S.G. Pnn2, Z = 2, a = 5.072(1) angstrom, b = 4.903(1) angstrom, c = 8.402(2) angstrom) giving the series Li2(1-x)H2xTiTeO6.

The powder diffraction patterns are close to that of Li2TiTeO6. For x < 0.8, the orthorhombic symmetry of the starting material and the initial Ti/Te ordering are maintained (S.G. Pnn2, Z = 2). But, for x > 0.8, we observe a migration of Ti atoms in a preserved anionic network, involved by the departure of the last Li atoms.

In a first step, the structure get settled in a trirutile system with cationic vacancies (centric space group Pnnm). Then, a concerted migration of Ti atoms, obtained by further heating, gives an ordered trirutile phase (acentric space group P42nm).

The structures are refined by a modified Rietveld method applied to the X-Ray diffraction patterns. This study illustrates a new example of topotactic mechanism involved in the Li+/H+ exchange reactions on complex oxides.

Abstract: By dehydration of Cs[AlF4(H2O)2], three new forms of CsAlF4 are clearly evidenced. Structures of the crystallized beta and gamma forms are determined from X-ray powder diffraction data. The third new form is amorphous and gives by heating beta-CsAlF4 (I4c2BAR), Z = 20, a = 11.8101(4) angstrom, c = 13.3741(6) angstrom) isotypic with beta-RbAlF4. This beta form transforms irreversibly into gamma-CsAlF4 (Pnma, Z = 12, a = 10.5576(6) angstrom, b = 6.7500(4) angstrom, c = 17.5954(9) angstrom, the structure of which presents a new type of infinite and condensed (AlF4)n(n-) chains, built up from (AlF6) octahedra.

Abstract: A case of candida meningitis occurring in a child treated for a lymphoma is reported. Diagnosis was made with Candida albicans culture in the CSF. Blood cultures were negative. Cerebral CT scan was normal. No other localization was found. The child was successfully treated by amphotericin B (initially with 5-fluorocytosin). Fluconazole was continued orally later on. This case is noteworthy by the absence of other localization, the favourable evolution and its occurrence in childhood. The therapeutic attitude and prevention are discussed.
