Abstract: PURPOSE: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a rare condition, which is mainly reported as isolated cases either antemortem or at autopsy. The role of AIDs itself is controversial, because many of the reported patients exhibited the classic risk factors such as neutropenia and steroid therapy. The aims of this study were to report 33 patients with IA during AIDS and their outcome, focusing on the risk factors and the value of diagnostic procedures.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-three patients from 17 different medical centers in France were retrospectively included in the study. For pulmonary IA, we defined two types Of patients: those with ''confirmed IA,'' describing all the patients with histologically proven disease, and those with ''probable IA,'' who had the development of a new pulmonary infiltrate on chest radiograph and a positive bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid culture for Aspergillus species without identification of other pathogens. For extrapulmonary IA, the diagnostic criteria included both positive histology and culture.

RESULTS: Of the 33 cases included in this series, 91% were recorded during the last 3 years (1989 to 1991), suggesting that aspergillosis is an emerging complication in AIDS. Approximately 50% of the patients did not exhibit any classic risk factor, i.e, neutropenia and steroid treatment; almost all patients had a CD4 cell count less than 50/mm3. The mycologic culture from BAL was the method of choice for the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary disease because it was known to correlate well with histologic findings obtained either antemortem or postmortem. Of 28 patients with a positive BAL culture for Aspergillus, 15 underwent a biopsy or autopsy and 14 were positive at histology. Serum antigen detection was positive in only 4 of 16 tested patients. Clinical and radiologic signs did not differ from those observed in neutropenic patients without human immunodeficiency virus, except for the higher incidence of neurologic complications in AIDS. Interestingly, we observed three cases of invasive necrotizing tracheobronchial aspergillosis with acute dyspnea and wheezing. The use of amphotericin B (0.5 mg/kg/d) and/or itraconazole (200 to 600 mg/d) was most often unsuccessful. Only four patients experienced clinical and radiologic improvement. The mean interval between the diagnosis of IA and death was 8 weeks (range: 3 days to 13 months).

CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that aspergillosis is an important life-threatening condition in the advanced stage of AIDS. It requires an early diagnosis with BAL fluid culture and careful therapeutic evaluation.

Abstract: The strongly correlated and nominally trivalent Ni oxides RNiO3 (R = Pr, Nd) show a sharp metal to insulator transition at T(M-I) = 135 and 200 K, respectively. Rare-earth (3d), Ni (1s, 2p), and O(Is) x-ray absorption measurements have been performed above and below the transition temperature in order to investigate (a) the valence of Ni and O atoms and (b) the changes in the electronic structure across the transition. Our results suggest that, in contrast to hole-doped Ni1-xLixO and La2-xSrxNiO4+delta, the electronic structure is characterized by a strongly hybridized ground state of mainly 3d7 character. The differences between the absorption edges at low (insulating) and high (metallic) temperatures are discussed in terms of the possible mechanisms responsible for the metal-insulator transition.

Abstract: X-ray reflectivity is a powerful technique to study electron density profiles in the direction normal to the surface of a flat sample. As usual in scattering experiments, where the phase information is lost, it is necessary to build a model that can be used to calculate the reflectivity for comparison with the measured reflectivity. In the calculations, it is necessary to correct the calculated reflectivity from geometrical and resolution-function factors, which play a major role at low angles of incidence. These factors are presented in this paper and the corrected calculated intensity is compared with the measured reflectivity of a commercial silicon wafer and of a niobium film on a sapphire substrate.

Abstract: The structure of two thin films of Nb grown epitaxially on sapphire has been studied using high-resolution x-ray-scattering techniques. The films, of nominal thickness 400 and 150 angstrom, were grown using molecular-beam epitaxy on a (1120BAR) sapphire substrate. They were of exceptionally high quality, with rocking curves of almost-equal-to 0.004-degrees for the (110)Nb Bragg peak. The x-ray scattering observed in transverse scans of the wave-vector transfer through the (110)Nb Bragg peak exhibits two other unusual features. First, weak satellite Bragg peaks are observed. These are shown to arise from a regular sinusoidal distortion of the Nb thin film. Using a frozen phonon model for this distortion, we relate the position of the satellites to the length of a terrace on the vicinal sapphire surface, and the intensity of the satellites to the lattice mismatch between the two materials in the surface normal direction. Second, in addition to the sharp Bragg peaks, there is a broader, diffuse component. This is isotropic in the plane of the film and has a Lorentzian-squared line shape. The diffuse component is shown to arise from a random network of two-dimensional Nb domains, with the size of domain related to the in-plane lattice mismatch. By combining these results with x-ray-reflectivity measurements from the thin films, and X-ray-reflectivity and crystal-truncation-rod measurements from the bare substrates, we develop a detailed model of the structure of Nb films on sapphire.

Abstract: The title compound was hydrothermally synthezised at 453K for 24 hours in presence of fluorine ions and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) as template. The structure have been determined by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The oxyfluorinated gallophosphate crystallizes in space group I4(1)/a, with cell parameters a = 13.455(1) angstrom and c = 18.902(1) angstrom, Z = 8, V = 3422.2(4) angstrom3, R(w) = 0.048, R = 0.043 for 2187 independent reflections. The cationic framework is built up from the stacking of [(12.3)2.(12.3.8).(12.3.8)]4 gallium-phosphorus plane nets and phosphorus square plane nets along the 4(1) helicoidal axis. Two new types of cages, (3(12)7(4)8(4)) and (3(12)6(4)7(4)) am thus generated and fit together by their identical number-membered ring. The DABCO molecule which exhibits dynamic disorder, is located in the larger cage (3(12)7(4)8(4)).

Abstract: The free-ion parameters for Eu3+ in LaOF, LaOBr, GdOCl, and YOCl crystals and in LaOCl crystals at high pressure (up to 13 GPa) are calculated and fitted to the experimental 'free-ion' energy levels. The Slater parameters F(k) and the spin-orbit coupling parameter zeta decrease with increasing pressure and with decreasing Eu3+-ligand distances along the two host series LaOCl-GdOCl-YOCl and LaOBr-LaOCl-LaOF. The shift of the free-ion parameters along the latter series exhibits an 'anti-nephelauxetic series' and therefore has a positive correlation with the overlap integrals. On the basis of the free-ion calculations and the calculations of the overlap integrals between Eu3+ and the ligands, a combined cloud-expanding model is proposed to explain the behaviour of the free-ion parameters.

Abstract: Objective: To study the androgen receptor gene in a large kindred with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome and positive receptor-binding activity.

Design: Enzymatic amplification coupled with single strand conformation polymorphism and DNA sequencing were used.

Results: In all the affected members, single strand conformation polymorphism showed a mobility shift in exon 2, suggesting a sequence alteration. Sequencing identified a valine into phenylalanine substitution at position 581 in the first zinc finger of the DNA-binding domain.

Conclusion: This valine 581 is conserved in all nuclear receptors and has an important role for the recognition of the androgen response elements by the activated androgen receptor. This amino acid substitution has not been previously described in the androgen receptor in patients with androgen insensitivity syndrome. Moreover, single strand conformation polymorphism allowed determination of the generation in which the mutation appeared and performance of carrier diagnosis in this family.

Abstract: The electron transfer properties of the mixed-valence biferrocenium cation are investigated using the Piepho-Krausz-Schatz (PKS) vibronic theory. Parameters of the model are deduced from both vibrational spectroscopy (stiffness constant) and MO calculations (transfer integral and vibronic coupling parameter); the computed asymmetric distortion agrees with structural data; a specific heat Schottky anomaly, recently reported, is also explained in the frame of that model. The low-temperature transfer rate is also computed. It ranges from 1.5 x 10(10) to 8.7 x 10(12) s-1, according to the nature of the HOMO, and definitively lies higher than the Mossbauer timescale (almost-equal-to 10(8) s-1).

Abstract: Thin liquid films of ordered diblock copolymers deposited on a solid substrate form a multilayer stacking parallel to the solid surface. A multilayer with a finite extend can be stable, metastable, or unstable, depending on the relative values of the surface energies of the various interfaces. The spreading parameter and chemical potential of a n-layer are derived, and used for classifying all possible situations. It is shown that only mono- and bilayers can be stable, and that non-wetting multilayers are subjected to a long-time piling up instability, leading in practice to the formation of characteristic ziggourat-like structures.

Abstract: The slow demixing of block copolymer thin films in relief domains is interpreted as a two-dimensional phase transition kinetics following a quench into a biphasic region of a phase diagram. The associated scalar parameter PSI is a linear function of the local thickness of film. Two samples with critical PSI's have been experimentally studied by atomic force microscopy. At long times, the two stable phases draw spinodal-decomposition-like patterns. At shorter times, the existence of an additional metastable phase is demonstrated and explained.

Abstract: The surface acoustic impedance of a glass wool and a reticulated foam is measured in a free field up to 20 000 Hz. The characteristic dimensions LAMBDA and LAMBDA' can be calculated for the glass wool, and the surface impedance can be predicted with no adjustable parameters. The motion of the frame is not taken into account. The agreement between measurement and prediction is good. For the foam, the characteristic dimensions cannot be calculated, because the geometry of the frame is not simple. A correct choice of LAMBDA and LAMBDA' allows a precise prediction of the surface impedance for a large range of frequencies and different thicknesses.

Abstract: A new perovskite crystal, BaLiF3 doped with lead was subjected to e- irradiation. A metal related color center involving the Pb2+ ion emitting at 880 nm was identified. The excitation spectrum at 70K shows that there are three bands peaking at 744, 487 and 305 nm (also present in the absorption spectrum) that are responsible for this emission. These bands, either in relative transition magnitudes and energy positions, are the expected ones for the lead perturbed color center, Pb+(1), the isoelectronic specie of the laser active Tl0(1) center.

Abstract: Two original 3d transition metal fluorocarbonates are evidenced: BaMn(CO3)F2 and BaCu(CO3)F2. Their hydrothermal growth is performed at T = 740-degrees-C, P=200 MPa, t = 20h. Their crystal structure derives from that of KPuO2(CO3) (hex, a=5.09angstrom , c=9.83angstrom). BaCu(CO3)F2 is orthorhombic a=4.889(1)angstrom, b=8.539(3)angstrom, c=9.588(3)angstrom, Cmcm, Z=4, calculated density d=4.937, MoKalpha, lambda=0.7109angstrom, mu =149.73cm-1, F(000)=524, R=0.0174, R(W)=0.0178, 429 unique reflections. The structure is built up from trans-chains of CuF2O2O2/2 octahedra linked by carbonate ions in the (a.b) plane. They form infinite [Cu(CO3)F2]2- sheets at z=1/4 and z=3/4, separated by Ba2+ ions.

Abstract: Polyolefins and their model molecules, some n-alcanes, have been modified by a tetrafluoromethane microwave plasma. The chosen molecules are high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and hexatriacontane (HTC), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and paraffin, and polycaprolactone (PCL) and octadecyl octadecanoate (ODO). It has been found, except for paraffin, that the model surfaces have the same behavior as the corresponding polymers. Plasma modification is described as the sum of two mechanisms: degradation and fluorination. These reactions seem to be competitive and parallel. Degradation and fluorination rates are dependent on treatment time and are practically independent on substrate position. A domain of fluorination exists near the edge of plasma, whatever the substrate in or outside plasma. (C) 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract: Large Bay2F8 and BaYb2F8 single crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. The structure of the former was determined by X-ray diffraction at room temperature and both crystals were studied by Raman spectroscopy from room temperature down to 20 K. At room temperature, all the results are consistent with the monoclinic structure C2/m as already proposed for Bay2F8, but the structure refinements suggest a slight disorder around one of the fluorine sites. Most of the normal modes of vibration are tentatively identified using the relationships between the irreducible representations of the point group C2h and those of the supergroups D2h and D3d. For BaYb2F8, anomalous electronic lines appear in the Raman spectra below 80 K. The magnetic susceptibility of this compound was also studied in the range 4K-280K. The results are consistent with a large zero-field splitting of Yb3+, as also deduced from the Raman study.

Abstract: In this article, stress and strain distributions in the elementary cell are studied in the case of unidirectional discontinuous fibre composites as functions of the geometrical arrangement of fibres. This arrangement is characterized by the volume fraction of fibres, the fibre aspect ratio and the fibre spacing parameter. Thus, two extreme schemes are analyzed by the finite element method: one scheme with stresses imposed on the elementary cell and another scheme with an imposed deformation field. The first is related to a geometrical repartition of fibres without overlapping of fibre ends. The article shows that the second scheme can be associated with a hexagonal arrangement of fibres with a regular overlapping of fibre ends. The theoretical results obtained for Young's effective modulus of fibre composites show that modulus depends strongly on the geometrical arrangement of fibres, thus Young's modulus of discontinuous fibre composites cannot be derived from an isolated cell scheme. The article shows that the predominant factor is the overlap between the ends of adjacent fibres. For a regular overlapping of fibre ends, each elementary cell (fibre and matrix) stretches the neighbouring cells by a lateral transmission of load. Thus, the effective modulus is quite close to the bound given by the law of mixtures. On the other hand. in the case of a geometrical repartition without overlapping of fibre ends, the tensile load imposed to the composite is transferred by the alternating layers of matrix and matrix-fibre. In this case, the effective modulus then depends on the distance between fibre ends.

Abstract: The crystal stucture of a new fluorocarbonate Na3La2(CO3)4F, obtained by hydrothermal growth, is presented. Na3La2(CO3)4F is hexagonal, P6(3)/mmc, Z=2; a=5.083(1)angstrom, c=23.034(5)angstrom, R=0.021, R(w)=0.024, 531 unique reflections. (LaO9)2F entities are built up from two LaO6+3F polyhedra linked by the fluorine atom. These groups form infinite double layers (LaO6/2+3)2F parallel to the (a,b) plane in which and between which Na(1) and Na(2) atoms are inserted. Carbonate ions share their vertices with three neighbouring LaO9F polyhedra. Such an arrangement is compared to that found in baiyuneboite NaBaCe2(CO3)4F and huanghoite BaCe(CO3)2F minerals. MAS NMR experiments on sodium indicate a static character for Na(1) and a vibrational motion for Na(2), correlated to carbonate motion.

Abstract: Fine particles of FeB of different compositions were obtained by chemical reactions in solutions. Diverse factors, such as initial reactant concentrations, the speed at which the reactants were added, etc., influence the homogeneity of the final particles obtained. Mossbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies evidenced the presence of different phases. The results are discussed as a function of the initial nominal concentrations. It is concluded that only an iron content close to the eutectic in the FeB phase diagram can lead to rather pure amorphous particles.

Abstract: Model polyelectrolyte networks having controllable and independently known structural characteristics were prepared from different molecular weights of alpha,omega-amino-terminated poly(acrylic acid), by cross-linking them with a trifunctional isocyanate coupling agent. The density of cross-links, average molecular weight between cross-links, and the functionality of the cross-link points of these networks have been characterized. The swelling behavior of these novel networks was studied as a function of bath pH and ionic strength and the results were interpreted in term of structure-property relationships of the polymeric compounds. The maximum hydration was achieved at values of pH greater than 7. Hydration was linearly dependent upon the average molecular weight between cross-links, M(c)BAR. The hydration relative to this maximum value, H(rel) = H/H(max), was a function of pH but not of M(c)BAR. The relative hydration, H(rel), and fraction of carboxyl groups ionized, alpha, were similar functions of the pH of the equilibrating solution. In previous studies, on randomly cross-linked polyelectrolyte networks, M(c)BAR, could not be directly characterized by experimental measurements and has been inferred using theoretical models. In this study, we have directly related the network structural parameters, which were imposed by the synthetic route used and confirmed experimentally, to the macroscopic swelling behavior observed without invoking any theoretical models.

Abstract: A number of sharp fractions from low methoxyl citrus pectin have been studied using dynamic and static light scattering and size exclusion chromatography. The efficiency of the dynamic light scattering technique for the characterization of aqueous pectin solutions is demonstrated even when aggregages are present. The measured molar mass dependence of the Stokes radius confirms the semi-rigid structure of pectin. The effect of a number of sample manipulations on the aggregate content has been investigated and a simple but effective purification method is presented.

The mixed-valence species exhibits a quasi-delocalized behavior at the Mossbauer timescale (approximately 10(-8) s), with a splitting of the lines which is interpreted in terms of a partial valence trapping. This in turn reveals intramolecular properties at variance from those of the unbridged cation. SCC-Xalpha MO calculations have been performed; they correctly reproduce the measured quadruple splittings and provide evidence that the HOMO of the mixed-valence complex is of d(xy), d(x2-y2) type. It shows the existence of four phases: a complex quaternary fluoride Ba10Cu12ScF47, two ''polytypic'' phases the structure of which derives from that of BaCuF4 and a tetragonal solid solution Ba5Sc3-xCuxF19-x with 0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 1.

Abstract: Dielectric measurements were performed during the cross-linking reaction of an epoxy/amine system. Two transitions are successively crossed: the gelation which is a transition of connectivity and the vitrification which is a transition of mobility. It is found that dielectric measurements are insensitive to gelation but nevertheless are a powerful method of investigation for the vitrification process. This latter transition is interpreted as a percolation of growing vitreous domains.

Abstract: The structure of Li3Cu2O4 was solved from X-ray powder diffraction data and refined from a multiphase specimen using the Rietveld method. The cuprate crystallizes in C2/m with Z = 2. The compound has a small homogeneity range. Typical parameters are a = 9.946(5) angstrom, b = 2.778(2) angstrom, c = 7.260(5) angstrom and beta = 119.10(2)-degrees. The structure may be described as an ordered intergrowth of slabs of Li2CuO2 and hypothetical LiCuO2 of NaCuO2 type. The formula suggests a copper(II, III) mixture, but there is only one crystallographic copper site which implies a more appropriate formulation as Li3+[Cu(II)O2]2-3/2 with parallel strands of edge-coupled CuO4 units running along the b axis.

Abstract: In this paper, we report the synthesis of telomers of tert-butyl acrylate (tBA) and of acrylic acid using bis(4-aminophenyl) disulfide as ''iniferter'' (initiator-transfer-terminator). Polymers with molecular weights of (20-50) x 10(3) (tBA) and polydispersities of almost-equal-to 2 were formed. We found that bis(4-aminophenyl) disulfide provided significant control over the polymerization of tBA, which also allowing for the formation of alpha,omega-diamino-functionalized poly(tBA). The molecular weight distributions of the isolated polymers were insensitive to changes in temperature between 50 and 90-degrees-C. Telomers of tBA could be hydrolyzed quantitatively to telomers of acrylic acid using p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst in a solution of acetic acid and water.

Abstract: Low-molecular-weight organosilane polymers were prepared by sodium coupling of dichloromethylphenylsilane (1) with chlorotrimethylsilane (2). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), IR and NMR (H-1, C-13 and Si-29) analysis of the crude product (3) were performed and compared with those of the isolated first oligomers, trisilane (3a) and tetrasilane (3b). The GPC characteristics, especially high resolution ones, in accordance with the alpha,omega-bis(trimethylsilyl)oligo(methylphenylsilane) structure are compared with those of hydrocarbon polymers. The relations of the NMR characteristics of the methylphenylsilanediyl unit with the position along the chain and the configuration of the diads are approached. Some spectroscopic indications of the secondary structure are discussed.

Abstract: Endoscopic injection therapy significantly reduces the risk of bleeding relapse in patients with digestive hemorrhage due to peptic ulcers associated with a visible vessel. Profound and sustained acid inhibition by proton pump inhibitors may generate optimal conditions for clotting and prevent bleeding relapse. Over a one-year period, 52 patients presenting with digestive hemorrhage, in whom emergency endoscopy showed a peptic ulcer with a non-bleeding visible vessel, were enrolled in a multicenter randomized study comparing oral omeprazole, 40 mg per day (n = 31) vs adrenaline (1:10 000) plus polidocano1 (1 %) injection associated with oral ranitidine 300 mg per day (n = 21). Rebleeding occurred in 15/52 (29 %) patients: 8/31 (26 %) in the omeprazole group with 6 major hemorrhages (19 %), and in 7/21 (33 %) in the injection group with 3 major hemorrhages (14 %); the differences were not significant. No difference was observed between omeprazole and injection group in terms of volume of transfused blood (2.03 +/- 1.5 vs 3.1 +/- 0.9 blood units), need for hemostatic surgery (9.6 % vs 14.3 %), mortality (19.3 % vs 14.3 %) and mean hospital stay (11.5 days both groups). This study suggests that oral omeprazole, 40 mg per day, has an efficacy comparable to injection therapy in reducing the bleeding relapse from non bleeding peptic ulcers associated with visible vessel.

Abstract: Recent developments in the theory for acoustical properties of porous materials with rigid frames introduced two characteristic dimensions related to the high-frequency behaviour of the viscous forces and the thermal exchanges in addition to the classical parameters of porosity, flow resistivity and tortuosity. These characteristic dimensions are used with recent expressions of the effective mass and the compressibility of the air in porous materials to predict the surface impedance in the high-frequency range. Measurements of the surface impedance performed in a free field are used to evaluate the accuracy of the model. The same model is generalised in the context of the Biot theory to the case of elastic framed materials. The effect of the frame wave on the surface impedance of a layer fibrous material, an on the transmission through a fibrous material bonded onto a plate is studied with this new model.

Abstract: Acoustical measurements using scale models offer a time- and cost-efficient method for determining the acoustical properties of enclosures. In order to listen into the models, measured impulse responses have to be compensated for excessive air attenuation in the model, equalized for transducer response, and their dynamic range has to be extended. The corresponding processing, restricted to monaural signals, is described.

Abstract: Let G=(L,R,E) and H=(L',R',E') be bipartite graphs. A bijection phi:L or R-->L' or R' is said to be a biplacement of G and H if phi(L)=L' and phi(x)phi(y) is-not-an-element-of E' for every edge xy of G. A biplacement of G and its copy is called a 2-placement of G.

We prove that, with some exceptions, every bipartite graph G of order n and size at most n-2 has a 2-placement. We. also give some sufficient conditions for bipartite graphs G and H to have a biplacement.

Abstract: Sound transmission through elastic solids and porous media having an elastic frame involves longitudinal and transverse waves. A modelling of sound propagation through layers of these media by transfer matrices, which is equivalent to a representation by analogous multi-port circuits was performed previously. The different ports of the circuits are related to the normal and the tangential strains and velocities on the two faces of the layers. The use of impedance matrices instead of transfer matrices shows that the coupling between the normal and the tangential conjugate variables is antireciprocal, and is reciprocal for conjugate variables having the same nature. Moreover, it can be proven that the transmission loss through stratified materials in contact with the same fluid on the front and the rear face is the same in opposite directions of propagation.

Abstract: We reviewed bladder contraction evolution after sacral anterior root stimulator implantation in thirty patients operated on from 1984 to 1991. Two patients underwent a complete denervation with a reinnervation within a maximal time of seventeen months. One patient underwent a lesion, like a neuropraxia with a complete recovery at four months. Five patients have undergone a partial denervation with a recovery of miction by neurostimulation within the time of eighteen months. In three patients, bladder contraction disappeared for various reasons.

Abstract: We have discovered a new combination in chemical composition in garnets showing very high values of initial magnetic permeability. These garnets were found by using two magnetic phase transition phenomena in the same crystallographic structure: a spin reorientation transition and a ferrimagnetic paramagnetic transition. The critical temperatures are fixed by the introduction in the garnet Y3Fe5O12 of terbium ions x in dodecahedral sites and scandium ions y in octahedral sites. Values of permeability from 10(3) to 10(4) have been measured in a broad range of temperature.

Abstract: N-Alkylation of (R)-(-)-2-aminobutan-1-ol 1 (a readily available reagent) with ortho-fluorobenzyl chloride, followed by reaction with cinnamoyl chloride, afforded the cinnamamide (R)-(+)-6. Michael addition of n-alkyl magnesium halides to the latter gave the corresponding adducts (R,R)-8a-e whose diastereomeric excesses were higher than 92% as evidenced by F-19 NMR. Acidic hydrolysis of these adducts yielded the corresponding beta-phenylalkanoic acids (R)-(-)-9a-e.

Abstract: A two dimensional system consisting of a half-infinite linear chain of A atoms wedged between two quarter-infinite square lattices of B atoms is considered to be bound. We present a calculation for the localized vibrational states on the extremity of the chain A at the boundary as a function of the system parameters. The chain, regarded as an isolated inhomogeneity extending from the boundary into the bulk of the system, together with the surface boundary, break the symmetry in two dimensions. The matching method is used, and it is shown that it is necessary to generalize the method in two dimensions in order to treat the evanescent vibrational states of the system.

Abstract: The emergence of an autoantibody directed against factor VIII may be responsible for severe, life-threatening haemorrhages. This rare disease is usually idiopathic, but it may be consecutive to an autoimmune disease or to the absorption of certain drugs such as penicillin. The diagnosis rests on the finding of a prolonged activated thromboplastin time with presence of a circulating anticoagulant and deep fall in factor VIII level.

Two cases of severe haemorrhage successfully treated with porcine factor VIIIc are reported. The first case concerned an 80-year ofd woman presenting with a large haematoma of the thigh uncontrolled by injections of human factor VIIIc. The second case was that of a 24-year old woman in a state of shock due to a pleural blood effusion that occurred during heparin treatment of cerebral thrombophlebitis, combined with penicillin treatment of bronchial superinfection. In both cases the high-titer autoantibody to the human factor VIIIc did not, or little, cross with porcine factor VIIIc. Factor VIII rose after the first injection of the porcine factor, and the haemorrhage was rapidly controlled. In both cases, the autoantibody disappeared within a few months, either spontaneously or after treatment with immunosuppressants.

Abstract: Gastro-oesophageal reflux and pneumonia are complications of enteral feeding. We report our experience of a scintigraphic technique in 51 patients fed by percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. The technique was very well tolerated; only one patient (2 percent) had vagal discomfort. A quantitative isotopic study using Tc 99 m labelled enteral infusion demonstrated episodes of reflux in 26 patients (51 percent). The reflux was greater than 6 percent of recording time in 15 patients. All patients with pneumonia had positive scintigraphy. Our study suggests that reflux is frequent after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy and constant in patients with pneumonia.

Abstract: The taxonomic importance of uninucleate vs. multinucleate vegetative cells in the Ceramiaceae is emphasized. It has been possible to make visible nuclei in old material, including type specimens, using aceto-carmine and aceto-iron-haematoxylin stains. The holotypes of Ceramium roseum and Callithamnion fasciculatum (currently known as Callithamnion roseum and Pleonosporium borreri var. fasciculatum) have uninucleate cells and belong to Aglaothamnion. In contrast, the holotype of Callithamnion decompositum, a name that has been applied to collections of at least two uninucleate taxa, has multinucleate cells; its morphological and cytological details agree with those of specimens collected in France and Ireland that were previously thought to represent an undescribed species. Female reproductive morphology (described from a thallus with gametangia in addition to tetrasporangia), in conjunction with habit and vegetative features, indicates that this species belongs to Compsothamnion (Compsothamnieae), as a third species, being distinguished from C. thuyoides and C. gracillimum by its sessile, lateral tetrasporangia. The required new combinations under Aglaothamnion and Compsothamnion are made.

Abstract: Fluoride PZG (PbF2, ZnF2, GaF3) glass layers have been successfully grown on metal, glass, and semiconductor substrates by co-evaporation under vacuum conditions. When doped with a suitably chosen rare earth element, the layer becomes an active medium which can be used for making integrated optical components. In this paper, the surface quality of the layers is inspected by means of a new non-destructive optical technique: phase stepping microscopy (PSM). Interferograms from a reflection microscope are automatically interpreted using computer assisted image processing to give synthesized images of the relief of the film surface and the substrate surface buried below the film. The resolution is 1 nm in the vertical direction and 0.6 mum laterally. Results are presented of the analysis of the quality of a PZG glass layer grown on a gold-plated brass substrate. Preliminary results on ZBLAN, GaAs and InP substrates are also discussed.

Abstract: For many years, all application dossiers sent to the Ministry of Health for use in Alzheimer's disease focused on the correction of cognitive disorders. Discussions were centered on the choice of cognitive evaluation scales and psychometric tests.

The situation has since evolved and in addition to the cognitive disorders, applications must also consider daily life activities and comportmental disorders. Animal experiences remain classical, the use of aged animals not bringing much information and being extremely expensive.

Phase I does not need to be modified at this stage. Phase however, must be done with extreme methodological rigor, and especially with an evaluation of pertinent clinical benefit in the cognitive and non-cognitive fields. The simple statistically significant improvement in one scale or another was not found sufficient by the Commission. The pharmaceutical company there fore has to find the benefit risk ratio that has real therapeutic interest. If this ratio seems pertinent to the Ministry, then phase III studies can be done to confirm longterm efficacy on enough patients.

The study of drug action is very interesting to advance research or even in the application dossier, but in all cases, the ratio of pertinent clinical benefit to the risk of side effects remains the cornerstone of the decision.

The, synthesis of I by hydrolysis of polymers of 3-acetoxy-1-phenyl-1,3-butadiene (2a) and of 1-phenyl-3-(trimethylsiloxy)-1,3-butadiene(2b) have been tested: the polyketones I, are proved to be more easily accessible from 2 b and its polymer (3 b) than from 2 a and its polymer (3 a). The polyketones II, III and IV have then been synthesized from the copolymer (4) of 2 b with styrene, the copolymer (5) of 2b with 1-phenyl-1,3-butadiene, and the polymer (8) of 2-phenyl-3-(trimethylsiloxy)-1,3-butadiene (7), respectively. The photochemical behaviour of these polyketones and copolyketones is in accordance with the previously observed regiospecific alpha-phenyl-side towards the beta-phenyl-side fragmentation and shows that the expected photosensibilisation of the beta-phenyl-side fragmentation by increasing phenyl to carbonyl ratio is not observed.

Abstract: A matricial equation for acoustic horns is derived, based on the modal decomposition in a waveguide with uniform cross section. Mode coupling at infinitesimal step discontinuities is described by a matrix independent of the axial coordinate. Two first order equations are derived, defining a matricial transmission line, then a second order equation is obtained for the acoustic pressure, generalising the classical horn equation.

Abstract: The compound BaNbF7-x(OH)x has been prepared at moderate temperature in a PTFE beaker from HF aqueous solutions. It crystallizes m the cubic system, space group Pa3BAR (n-degrees 205) with a = 9.9259(5) angstrom, Z = 8. The structure has been determined by X-Ray diffraction data from a single crystal leading to R = 0.0199 and R(w) = 0.0194 for 337 independent reflections and 29 parameters. The tridimensional network is constituted of NbX7 (X = F, OH) isolated monocapped trigonal prisms. Two kinds of Ba2+ cations are located respectively in rhombododecahedra (CN = 14) and in cubooctahedra (CN = 12); the connection between these polyhedra and the NbX7 (X = F, OH) groups is discussed.

Abstract: Poly(propylene phosphonate) was treated with 2-picolylamine or 8-hydroxyquinoline via Atherton-Todd reaction to give hydrophilic organic polyphosphate-bound ligands. This was achieved in the presence of carbon tetrachloride and a base in dichloromethane solution. Model compounds derived from diethyl phosphonate were also synthesized. The final polymers as well as the model molecules were characterized by H-1, C-13 and P-31 NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract: A Raman scattering study of the quasi-reversible structural phase transitions observed below room temperature in the perovskite-type layer compounds K1-xRbxAlF4 with x = 0.06, 0.09 and 0.15 is reported. The Raman spectra were analysed with the help of the result of a calculation of the phonon spectrum in the ideal (aristotypic) phase (phase I, P4/mmm symmetry), For all the studied compounds, the spectra collected at room temperature are consistent with the P4/mbm symmetry (phase II), resulting from the condensation of the M3 mode. The phase IIIa Raman spectra for x = 0.06 and x = 0.09 are explained with the P2(1)/m space group and the phase II-phase IIIa transition can be imputed to the condensation of two components of the degenerate X3(1) mode plus one of the components of the degenerate M9(1) mode. The Raman spectra of the K0.85Rb0.15AlF4 Compound, on lowering the temperature, reveal the existence of a new phase (IIIb) between phase II and phase IIIa. An assignment to vibrational modes, in this phase IIIb, is possible in the Pmmn space group and so the phase IIIa-phase IIIb transition could be attributed to the condensation of the X3(1) mode like in pure RbAlF4. The non-reversible martensitic phase transition of the pure compound KAlF4 is no longer observed for x = 0.15.

Abstract: The present Note describes some measurements of elastic wavespeeds obtained in several composite materials by using laser generation of ultrasound The three bulk modes are generally identified at the epicentre configuration. The quasi-longitudinal mode is tracked by using a correlation algorithm, during scanning experiments along principal acoustic axes, up to a large observation angle (typically in the range of 80-degrees). The two transverse modes are more difficult, for several reasons, to obtain with precision. The wavespeeds obtained by using the laser technique are compared with traditional ultrasonic data for two different composite materials. The agreement is generally satisfactory, tending to indicate the fact that the characterization of elastic properties of composite materials by laser generation of ultrasound is possible along arbitrary directions.

Abstract: Ba10Cu12FeF47 is monoclinic (space group: C 2/m): a = 15.447(5) angstrom, b = 11.638(8) angstrom, c = 11.809(2) angstrom, beta = 109.92(2), Z = 2. The X-ray diffraction photographs show satellite reflections indicating a modulated structure. An average structure can be proposed from single crystal data using 1680 independent reflections (R = 0.032, R(w) = 0.036). The complete structure can be described starting from the following hypothesis: three cupric sites, fully occupied, are located in elongated octahedra and five other sites are half occupied. The ferric ions share one octahedral site with cupric ions in order to build up edge-sharing bioctahedra. All these polyhedra containing the transition elements form layers parallel to (010) plane which are separated by barium ions.

Abstract: The mature gametangia, gametes, gamete fusion, young motile zygotes and development of the settled zygotes into unicellular sporophytes (Codiolum stages) are described in Ulothrix flacca (Dillwyn) Thuret var. roscoffensis Berger-Perrot (Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta) using light and electron microscopy. Flagella of gametes narrow to a hair-like point. Gamete fusion takes place near two lateral thickenings of the plasma membrane, which are considered to be poorly differentiated mating structures. The dilated perinuclear space contains an unidentified electron-dense substance. Karyogamy generally takes place 8-24 h after gamete fusion and chloroplasts have fused 12 h after gamete fusion. Flagella are shed approximately 8 h after fertilization. Twelve hours after, abundant osmiophilic droplets are secreted on the plasma membrane of the zygotes prior to formation of the cell wall. Forty-eight hours later, the quiescent zygotes become stalked sporophytes after striking cytological changes. These features are discussed in relation to other members of the Ulvophyceae and other green algae.

Abstract: The experimental study of wave attenuation in concrete has been achieved in the case of the propagation of plane waves in concrete rods. Different mortars and concretes have been investigated. A transmitter transducer coupled to one of the ends of the concrete rod generates the propagation of a plane wave in the rod. The receiver transducer, similar to the previous one, is coupled to the other end of the rod. The experimental results lead to an analytical expression for wave attenuation as function of the concrete composition, the propagation distance, and the wave frequency.

Abstract: A non-destructive method for measurements of rare earth concentrations in doped glasses is presented. It is based on the comparison of the intensity of a luminescence signal from the rare earth ions with the intensity of a Raman line from the host matrix, both measured in a single geometry. The analysis requires the use of a micro-Raman spectrometer. The investigations were performed in neodymium-doped phosphate glasses (in the concentration range 0-8 wt%) and in praseodymium-doped fluoride glasses (in the concentration range 0-1 wt%). In standard use, the relative error on the results does not exceed 10%. The method, punctual (a few mum3) and highly sensitive, is better adapted for low concentration measurements.

Abstract: The layered tetrafluoroaluminates K1-xRbxAlF4 undergo several structural phase transitions, the existence and features of which evolve when varying x.

A study of the temperature variations of the elastic constants derived from Brillouin scattering and ultrasonic experiments is presented for x = 0.06, 0.09, 0.12 and 0.15. At room temperature, like in the pure KAlF4 and RbAlF4 compounds, all the mixed crystals studied show P4/mbm symmetry (denoted phase II), differing from the aristotypic phase (P4/mmm, phase I) by a tilting of the AlF6 octahedra around the c axis. Whereas pure KAlF4 presents a unique martensitic-like transition on lowering the temperature, a small amount of Rb+ ions (x > 0.02) induces an intermediate phase (P2(1)/m, phase IIIa), the existence temperature range of which increases with x. For x > 0.09, a new phase (P2(1)/m, phase IIIb) intercalated between phase II and phase IIIa is evidenced. All the phase transitions are monitored by the softening of normal phonon modes related to the rotation of the AlF6 octahedra. The measured elastic constants suffer pretransitional and transitional characteristic behaviours that are explained according to the various mechanisms involved during the transformations.

Abstract: KCaAl2F9 is described as being possibly orthorhombic (space group C222(1)) with a = 12.343(2) angstrom, b = 7.152(1) angstrom, c = 22.679(4) angstrom and Z = 12. The structure is refined from 2337 reflections to R = 0.079, a value which could be lowered to 0.061 by applying a twinning hypothesis. Aluminum atoms occupy octahedral sites whereas potassium and calcium atoms show respectively ten and eight-fold coordination (hexagonal bipyramid). When considering the calcium atoms as occupying a distorted octahedral site (the two additional fluorine atoms being at large distance), the structure derives from the hexagonal tungsten bronze structure (HTB). It is built up with six tilted HTB layers of composition [CaAl2F9]nn- linked by octahedra vertices. The layer stacking follows a pseudo 6(1) axis parallel to a pseudo-hexagonal tunnel where are located the K+ ions. An isotypic series with the KCaM2F9 formulation is evidenced.

Abstract: Background. The vital outcome for treated medulloblastoma in children is generally positive provided there is no evidence of recurrence 18 months after initial surgery and radiotherapy. Late recurrences have, however, been reported.

Case report. A medulloblastoma in the posterior fossa of a 10 year-old-boy was treated by almost complete surgical excision, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. One year later, the CT scan was normal but, 4 years after surgery, it showed supra-and infratentorial tumors. Progressive hydrocephaly required a ventriculoperitoneal shunt 9 years after the initial surgery, progressive neurological degradation and the presence of cells in the CSF were treated by several courses of chemotherapy, with subsequent improvement of the neurological condition. This boy is in a stabilized condition 11 years after the discovery of the tumor.

Conclusion. The first symptomatic recurrence of medulloblastoma was late, more than seven years after surgery. This recurrence was supra-and infratentorial and responded to non intensive chemotherapy.

Abstract: It is shown that a coupling between elastic deformation and concentration can exist in a two-component nematic liquid crystal. A simple phenomenological extension of the theory of elastic deformations in nematics to this case is presented. An experimental geometry where the strength of this effect may be estimated is discussed. Further, this coupling is shown to lead to lower energies of disclinations and may account for the experimentally observed stability of some high-strength disclinations in a doped nematic.

Abstract: Let m be a double occurrence word (i.e. each letter occuring in m occurs precisely twice). An alternance of m is a nonordered pair vw of distinct letters such that we meet alternatively ...v ...w ...v ...w ... when reading m. The alternance graph A(m) is the simple graph whose vertices are the letters of m and whose edges are the alternances of m. We define a transformation of double occurrence words such that whenever A(m) = A(n), m and n are related by a sequence of these transformations.

Abstract: The present work is an attempt to extend to the acoustics of anisotropic media the basic principles of optics (i.e. Fermat, and Huyghens principles). The acoustical case is much more intricate because of the possibility of existence of the cuspidal caustics. Firstly, one discusses the mathematical transformation between phase and group wavespeeds. Then, the problem of the reflection of a divergent acoustical ray onto an interface is studied with the help of Huyghens construction. A generalization of the classical refraction law is obtained. Such a result can also be derived from Fermat principle. It is possible to numerically verify the absence of precursor on the converted mode, due to the non-existence of caustics after reflection. A discussion on the so-called Cagniard-de-Hoop contours is introduced, as well as a numerical procedure to compute the direction of the reflected ray. Different cases, depending on the source dimension (point-like or line) and on the orientation cut of the anisotropic solid, are discussed. The extension of the study to several reflections is proposed. Special attention is also devoted to the analysis of the head wavefront reflection. Last, some experimental results dealing with the measurements of group wavespeeds in a transversely isotropic composite material are described. The present study will be followed by the computation of the Green functions and the comparison with experimental displacement fields for various anisotropic solids.

Abstract: Implantation of a sacral anterior root stimulator in spinal cord injured patients must achieve two main goals to maintain a vesicosphincteral balance: complete bladder voiding and correct continence.

During the postoperative period, difficulties may arise or persist with either an incontinence due to an insufficient deafferentation with bladder hyperreflexia or an incomplete voiding because of an insufficient contraction of detrusor and/or too high urethral resistances (vesicosphincteral dyssynergia).

A third of our patients required specific therapies after implantation to promote interstimulation continence and complete bladder voiding.

Regarding continence, adjuvant therapies are effective for bladder hyperreflexia in connection with a too-partial deafferentation. On the other hand, these therapies have little effect on low bladder compliance.

In regard to bladder voiding, nonsurgical treatments are equally effective. These treatments (parasphincteral infiltrations, alpha-blockers) must not be permanent, but allow a reharmonizing between expulsive strengths and urethral resistances.

Eighty percent of our patients who required adjuvant therapies have been improved significantly. This confirms the efficiency of adjuvant therapy and speaks for patience.

Abstract: Biomaterial can be defined as material with specific use in biological surroundings. Therefore, beyond toxicity aspects, biocompatibility is mainly due to adhesion phenomena (mechanical anchoring, dipole-dipole and acid-base interactions...). Only few molecular layers are concerned. Common materials treatment , such as cold plasma and radiation methods, leads largely to a modification of the surface chemistry which, for biological applications, must be taken into account. Different examples are given.

Abstract: The intensity and fate Of (CO2)-C-14-fixation in the dark are studied on Fucus serratus apices previously maintained under low illumination conditions using white, blue, red or yellow isoquantic lights.

In the case of a 180 s pulse, light quality affected dark carbon-fixation, with a higher level of incorporation into ethanol-soluble organic matter in the case of yellow light cultivated apices. After a 30 s pulse C-14 was mainly fixed into glycerate and aspartate-malate pools whatever the pre-treatment light conditions, with a higher level into glycerate when apices were pre-illuminated with blue or yellow light. After a 180 s pulse, C-14 was mainly transferred into amino acids (glutamate and alanine) at the expense of aspartate and malate in red and yellow pre-illumination conditions, as found in the white light reference experiment, and only at the expense of glycerate in blue light pre-illumination conditions.

The metabolic pathway of glycerate formation, principally enhanced by blue light preillumination, remains unexplained under these non-photosynthetic conditions. Results are discussed with reference to CO2-fixation via phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and light quality effects on its in vitro activity.

If k is odd and k less-than-or-equal-to (n+8)/6 or (n+8)/6 less-than-or-equal-to k less-than-or-equal-to n/2, and n/2 an odd integer, the result is the best possible. Abstract: This paper describes two methods for calibration of the frequency response of transducers used in acoustic emission testing of concrete. The first uses two transducers to be calibrated coupled back-to-back. One of the transducers is excited by an input signal. The frequency response of the transducers is then deduced from analysis of the output signal. Two types of excitation may be used: sinusoidal excitation, which makes it possible to obtain the response point by point, and impulse excitation, which gives the frequency response directly. The second method uses the breaking of a pencil lead on the transducer face. The response obtained must then be corrected. Three types of transducers, used in specific applications for acoustic emission testing of concrete, are then characterized by these methods.

Abstract: The rates of uptake of exogenous L[U-C-14] aspartate and glutamate into tissues of vegetative growing tips of Fucus serratus and their metabolism were studied in the dark. In these non-photosynthetic conditions, aspartate was fixed and metabolically converted more rapidly than glutamate. Radioactivity from C-14-aspartate was principally transferred into glutamate. On the other hand, metabolism of absorbed C-14-glutamate was very slow and its rate did not increase during incubation time, but produced more diversified soluble radioactive compounds. Thus in F. serratus, glutamate principally seems to be in the dark more a temporary (CO2)-C-14 storage product coming from beta-carboxylation than a rapidly turned over intermediate.

Abstract: The collection of Sphaeroma serratum natural populations along the part of Briton coast between Cancale and Saint-Brieuc enables to complete the map of distribution of major genes responsable for this Isopod polychromatism along the Channel and Atlantic coasts. 30 representative samples, including 40 046 individuals, were collected on this part of coast about 130 km long.

Though the analysis of results corroborates the genetic complexity of Briton populations, it does not show any significative correlations in the distribution of frequencies in lunulatum distinctly more numerous than any where else, and in ornatum, on the one hand, and in signatum and ''red''. on the other hand.

Abstract: A new approximate solution of the parallel whistler-mode dispersion equation in a weakly relativistic plasma is obtained under the assumption that the real part of the wave refractive index, N, predicted by this solution is close to the value of N predicted by the solution of the corresponding non-relativistic dispersion equation. Both the values of N and the values of the increment of wave growth or damping are closer to those obtained by numerical solution of the weakly relativistic dispersion equation than previously suggested approximations. The accuracy of the obtained solution increases with decreasing electron density, and/or anisotropy of the electron distribution function, and/or electron energy.

Abstract: We introduce the minimum sup-norm and the minimum L1-norm estimators of the parameters of diffusion type processes and study the asymptotical behaviors of these estimates as the diffusion coefficient tends to zero. It is established that, under regularity conditions, these estimators are consistent and the corresponding normed differences converge to certain random variables. For Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process these limit variables are asymptotically normal as time of observation tends to infinity.

Abstract: A novel simulation for the transfer function of high energy electrons with initial energy E0 (5 keV less-than-or-equal-to E0 less-than-or-equal-to 15 keV) based in an energy analysis of each stage of the diffusion, is presented for CEMS (Conversion Electron Mossbauer Spectroscopy). The numerical results are in good agreement with ICEMS (Integral Conversion Electron Mossbauer Spectroscopy) experimental data and with the results of previous simulations.

Abstract: QUIZ is a Distributed Intelligent Tutoring System for learning bridge bidding. A set of generic tasks is distributed among four specialists (a tutor, a problem solver, an explainer and a problem generator), who perform their tasks in parallel. These agents are heterogeneous. They own a private working memory and communicate by asynchronous messages passing. Increasing flexibility is a key point in improving the pedagogical capacities of ITS. The strategic level of flexibility results from the determination of the curriculum, the choice of the pedagogical strategy and the degree of expertise used in the problem solver. The choices made at this level must be based mainly upon the student model. The tactical level of flexibility results from the choice of exercise, the advising, the corrections and the explanations. In QUIZ the pedagogical actions are gathered and sequenced by means of plans, which are chosen by metarules and dynamically assembled from pieces that are memorized in libraries.

Abstract: Single crystals of (Pb2.8Fe1.2)Cu4O1.6(VO4)4(OH)2 are grown by hydrothermal synthesis (180 MPa, 773K, 72 h). The symmetry is orthorhombic with a = 7.525(7) angstrom, b = 5.900(3) angstrom and c = 9.640(5) angstrom, space group Pnma, Z = 1, R = 0.025, R(w) = 0.025. The structure of this new compound is built up of infinite Cu2+ rutile type chains linked by VO4 tetrahedra. Lead and iron are randomly distributed over the same crystallographic site leading to unusual seven-fold coordinated Fe3+. Structure relationships with the mineral Gamagarite Ba4(Fe3+, Mn3+)2(VO4)4(OH)2 [1] are presented, which show that the latter mineral is a defective form of the title compound.

Abstract: The crystal structure of the new hydrated fluoride KPbFeF6. H2O is studied by using a single crystal obtained by hydrothermal synthesis in HF solution. The cell is triclinic ( P 1BAR, Z = 2 ) with a = 5.955(1) angstrom, b = 6.125(1) angstrom, c = 8.694(2) angstrom, alpha = 86.35(1)-degrees, beta = 82.63(1)-degrees and gamma = 89.62(1)-degrees. The structure was solved from 2565 X ray reflections and the final reliability factors are R = 0.029 and R(w) = 0.028. The structure is described in term of (FeF6) octahedra linked by Pb2+ ions building a three-dimensional corner-sharing structure. Including two water molecules, the Pb2+ is eight-coordinated by a bicapped trigonal prism.

Abstract: The hydrological study of a productive borehole confirms that chalk aquifers in Normandy are of karstic type. After rainfall, underground water flow is rapid, it carries suspended particulate matter and becomes turbid. Turbidity recording was used as a natural tracer allowing analysis transfers between sinkholes and natural or artificial output. Such a study allows one to estimate the vulnerability of aquifers to accidental pollution.
