Abstract: The first three-dimensional magnetic ferric phosphate with an open structure [Fe-4(PO4)(4)F-2(H2O)(3)].[C6H14N2] has been hydrothermally synthesized (453 K, 24 h, autogeneous pressure) from a mixture of Fe2O3, H3PO4, HF, 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane (DABCO), and H2O in the ratio 1:2:2:0.5:80. The structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It is monoclinic (space group P2(1)/n (n degrees 14)) with a = 9.987(1) Angstrom, b = 12.275(1) Angstrom, c = 17.462(1) Angstrom, beta = 102.78(1)degrees, V = 2088(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 4. The structure, refined to wR(2)(F-2) = 0.062, R(F) = 0.026 from 5,286 reflections (I> 2 sigma(I), is three-dimensional. The complex framework is built up from two types of secondary building units. In the hexamer [Fe-3(PO4)(3)F-2(H2O)(2)],Fe3+ octahedra form via fluorine atoms corner sharing trimers that are capped by three PO4 tetrahedra. These hexamers share four vertices along [010] and form infinite columns. These columns are linked together along [100] and [001] by dimers [FePO7(H2O)] formed by the O linkage between a Fe3+ square pyramid and a PO4 tetrahedron. The resulting framework leaves large cages limited by 3-, 4-, 6-, and 8-membered windows in which the diprotonated amines are located. Upon heating, water molecules are lost between 150 and 260 degrees C. At 350 degrees C, the decomposition is achieved and leads to FePO4. The title compound orders antiferromagnetically at T-N = 10.7(1) K. Mossbauer spectroscopy confirms the presence of four distinct Fe3+ sites in the structure.

Abstract: Bovine beta-lactoglobulin is a globular whey protein that associates partly and reversibly in dimers in the native state. Static and dynamic light scattering techniques have been used to determine the relative amount of monomers and dimers, and to estimate their size and shape in different conditions. The effect of the ionic strength on the dimerisation has been studied at pH 2, where the protein is highly charged. A simple model, taking into account the monomer-dimer equilibrium and virial interactions has been used. The strength of the interactions depends on the amount of added salt, i.e. ionic strength, and influences the dimer dissociation. When the ionic strength decreases, the equilibrium is shifted towards the monomeric form. The dissociation, however, is only complete at very low concentration. The effect of temperature has been studied at pH 7 and low concentration where virial interactions are negligible. The dissociation increases with increasing temperature (5 degrees C-76 degrees C). At high temperatures, protein-protein aggregation is fast, even at low concentration. The temperature dependence can be described using a simple Van't Hoff model, even at temperatures where aggregation occurs. The ionic strength and temperature dependence both indicate that beta-lactoglobulin solutions have to be considered as a mixture of monomers and dimers.

Abstract: [Fe-3(PC)(4))(3)F-2, H3N-(CH2)(4)-NH3] has been synthesized hydrothermally (453 K, 24 h, autogenous pressure). Its structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It is orthorhombic (space group Pbca No. 61) with cell parameters a = 10.203(1) Angstrom, b = 18.670(1) Angstrom, c = 16.268(1) Angstrom, V = 3099(1) Angstrom(3) and Z = 8. Its three-dimensional structure, refined to R(1)(F-0) = 0.036 and wR(2)(F-0(2)) = 0.093 from 6821 unique reflections (I > 2 sigma(I)) is isostructural with the oxyfluorinated gallophosphate ULM-3. From a structural point of view, this leads to 10-membered channels along [100]. It is also an antiferromagnetic compound which orders at T-N = 37(2) K. Mossbauer data are consistent with the presence of two distinct Fe3+ sites in the high spin state: one corresponding to Fe3+ in an octahedral site and the other to two Fe3+ in trigonal bipyramids, Magnetic couplings are discussed in terms of superexchange and supersuperexchange interactions.

Abstract: Two compounds (AH(2))(0.5)V2O5 (A = ethylenediamine, piperazine) have been synthesized hydrothermally (180 degrees C, 24 h, autogeneous pressure). They are triclinic (space group <P(1)over bar>) with the following parameters: a = 6.253(3) Angstrom, b = 6.397(4) Angstrom, c = 7.470(4) Angstrom, alpha = 78.67(4)degrees, beta = 80.16(4)degrees, gamma = 77.20(4)degrees with Z = 2 for A = ethylenediamine; a = 6.3913(7) Angstrom, b = 6.4151(8) Angstrom, c = 8.2041(9) Angstrom, alpha = 94.508(7)degrees, beta = 105.934(7)degrees, gamma = 104.030(5)degrees with Z = 2 for A = piperazine. The inorganic layer are formulated [V2O5](-) with V-IV and V-V located on two different crystallographic sites. Vanadium(IV) realizes a square pyramidal coordination. Each (VO5)-O-IV polyhedron shares an edge with another one to ensure [V2O8] units in which the two terminal apices point respectively up and down relative to the middle plane constituted by the six equatorial oxygens. Vanadium(V) is tetrahedrally coordinated; each (VO4)-O-V tetrahedron is linked to three [V2O8] units, the fourth oxygen being free.

Abstract: A two-step mechanism for beta-lactoglobulin aggregation at pH7 has been reported in the literature. The first aggregation step is difficult to characterise, as small particles are formed with a strong tendency to further associate in bigger aggregates. Experimental evidence for a two-step aggregation process, using scattering techniques and size exclusion chromatography, is shown here. The effect of the ionic strength, the protein concentration and the heating temperature is discussed. The results show that the first step consists in the formation of small globular aggregates, whose size are only weakly, if at all, influenced by the parameters mentioned above.

Abstract: The evolution of the frequency dependence of the viscoelastic properties during the gel formation of polyurethane has been monitored as a function of time. Over the frequency range investigated, the frequency dependence of the shear moduli G' and G'' are well described by the power laws G' similar to omega(Delta') and G'' similar to omega(Delta''), for all the reaction times investigated. Gel times are taken as the critical times where a frequency independent loss tangent (tan(delta) = G''/G') is observed. At these critical times, the frequency dependencies of G' and G'' follow the same power law with: the same exponent Delta' = Delta'' = 0.69 +/- 0.04, which, within the experimental error, is independent of the initial stoichiometry r. Measurements of fully cured networks (far above the gel point) show that G'' follows a power law behavior with exponent Delta'' = 0.54, while in the same frequency range, G' has already reached its plateau value. This low-frequency behavior of G'' appears to be independent of r (for r > 0.6) and is not as yet included in the theoretical models.

Abstract: The acoustic wave most commonly transmitted and detected in the high-porosity absorbent materials used in noise control is generally the air-borne slow compressional wave. In a new experiment, the air saturating the sample is replaced by helium and the transmission is studied at ultrasonic frequencies (70-600 kHz). The experiment is quite easily performed using standard ultrasonics and vacuum equipment. The main purpose of this work is to propose a method to determine simultaneously both the viscous and thermal characteristic lengths with the same precision. These two parameters characterize the viscous and the thermal interactions between the frame and the fluid at high frequencies. The characteristic lengths are deduced from the high-frequency asymptotic behavior of either the velocity or the attenuation curves obtained in the sample saturated by air and by helium. It also appears that due to the properties of helium, the discrepancy previously observed between predictions and measurements is shifted toward higher frequencies. Abstract: The improvement of flame-retardation of thermosetted epoxy-amine resins was attempted by chemically incorporating phosphorus-containing reagents. By reacting 4,4'-diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with dialkyl(or aryl) phosphate, it was possible to chemically modify the epoxy resin and then cure it in the presence of 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) to obtain epoxy-amine resin with good flame-retardant and thermal stability behaviors. The quantitative aspect of the addition of dialkyl(or aryl) phosphate onto glycidyle oxiranes was evaluated by elemental analysis of the modified epoxy-amine resins. Flammability and thermal behaviors of modified DGEBA/DDS resins depend on the nature of phosphate groups (the best flame-retardation was observed on resins bearing phenyl phosphate groups) and their concentration in the material. In relation to DGEBA/DDS samples containing additives of the same structure [trialkyl(or aryl) phosphate], cured resins incorporating chemically bonded phosphate groups show a better flame-retardation. On the contrary to the nonmodified DGEBA/DDS [with or without trialkyl(or aryl) phosphate as additive], combustion of modified DGEBA/DDS resins is accompanied by formation of intumescent char. Chemical modification of DGEBA by dialkyl(or aryl) phosphates can be carried out in situ during the curing of epoxy resins without change in the fire behavior. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract: X-ray diffraction measurements in the region of small incidence and exit angles on thin polystyrene (PS) films deposited on laterally structured surfaces are performed. From fits of the data we obtain how the Fourier-components of the substrates are damped by the adsorbed films. The results are compared with theoretical predictions for liquid films. It turns out that PS-films of low molecular weight (less than or equal to 300k) behave like frozen liquids. Within films of a molecular weight of 1000k viscoelastic forces dominate over the substrate-adsorbate van der Waals-interactions so that even a 680 Angstrom thick film is not totally flat on top of a grating with a height of 130 Angstrom.

Abstract: The influence of argon plasma on polycarbonate (PC) was studied in terms of structural changes, reaction mechanisms, and adhesion, In situ ultraviolet-visible ellipsometry reveals formation of a surface layer with a higher refractive index than the untreated polymer. The increase in the refractive index is attributed to polymer densification, which in turn is attributed to crosslinking. However a decrease in the average molecular weight is also observed, and two populations of macromolecules of different sizes are detected by light scattering measurements, revealing a competition between crosslinking and degradation. The reaction mechanisms are investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance and in situ infrared ellipsometry. Degradation is caused by carbonate bond breaking, whereas crosslinking seems to be related to a decrease in methyl groups. In addition, an increase in surface acidity is detected by contact angle measurements and is attributed to photo-Fries rearrangements producing phenolic groups. The adhesion of a 1-mu m-thick silica layer on PC is evaluated by the microscratch test, and its enhancement by argon plasma pretreatment is analyzed. (C) 1996 American Vacuum Society.

Abstract: Two copolyethers were prepared by chemical modification of poly[3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxetane] with sodium 4-cyano-4'-biphenyl oxide, employing the concept of having the cyanobiphenyl species serve concomitantly as both the nonlinear optical chromophore and the mesogenic moiety in the polymer. Their thermal behavior was established by means of DSC and optical microscopy. Some preliminary Corona poling experiments were performed, and the second harmonic generation coefficients d(31) and d(33) were measured by Maker fringe analysis. The results showed that liquid crystallinity enhances field-induced polar ordering. The ratio d(33)/d(31) was found to be much larger than 3, in agreement with the theoretical models for electric field poling of liquid crystalline polymers where hyperpolarizable chromophores are attached as side groups to a polymer backbone.

Abstract: The synthesis and structural characterization of oxyfluorinated microporous gallophosphates with the ULM-3 type are presented. This material is hydrothermally prepared (180 degrees C, autogenous pressure, 24 h) by using linear diamines [H2N-(CH2)(3-5)-NH2] as templates. The structures of the phases obtained with the variable organic chain lengths were examined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and P-31, F-19, C-13 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This study showed that the relative flexibility of the C-3-C-5 diamines allows the preservation of the topology of the type ULM-3. In this series, the presence of fluorine, which is found in the bridging position between two gallium atoms, is strongly correlated to the existence of hydrogen bonds with ammonium groups of the organic molecules.

Abstract: Orange crystals of (NH4)(2)(VO)-O-IV((V2-xPxO7)-P-V) were synthesized hydrothermally. Their structure was solved by X-ray diffraction in the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal space group P4 (No. 75) a = 8.629(2) Angstrom, c = 5.648(4) Angstrom, Z = 2, R1(F-0) = 0.0495, omega R2(F-0(2)) = 0.1125 for 1747 independent reflections. The chemical analysis indicates the presence of phosphorus in the material with a VIP ratio close to 2. The X-ray structural determination confirms the fresnoite-type structure with a disordered occupation of the tetrahedral site by the V-V and P atoms. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

Abstract: The combustion method, a fast and simple way of preparing sub-micrometer sized particles from a solution of the corresponding metal nitrates and a reducing agent (ODH, TFTA) which is used as a fuel, was adapted to the synthesis of barium hexaferrite particles. Structural and magnetic properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electronic microscopy, magnetic measurements and Mossbauer spectrometry on nanostructured as well as on microstructured particles resulting from annealing treatments under different conditions. High values of the coercive field (5.3 kOe) and of the magnetization (57.8 emu/g), at 13.5 kOe, were obtained on well crystallized BaFe12O19 particles annealed at 850 degrees C.

Abstract: 3,3-Bis(4-cyano-4'-biphenylyloxymethyl)oxetane was prepared by reaction of 3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxetane with the sodium salt of 4-cyano-4'-hydroxybiphenyl. With highly purified dichloromethane, single crystals could be prepared. The X-ray patterns could be indexed in terms of a monoclinic cell a = 13,87 Angstrom, b = 14,74 Angstrom, c = 13,91 Angstrom and beta = 118,68 degrees. Some experiments were carried out to determine the cationic polymerization behavior of this oxetane. The initiating system BF3 . Et(2)O/dichloromethane was used and it was shown that unusually high initiator concentrations were necessary to observe polymerization. By means of steric exclusion chromatography and NMR spectroscopy, the formation of cyclic oligomers was evidenced. Upon heating, all the polymers showed a nematic phase. Some preliminary Corona poling experiments were performed and the second harmonic generation coefficients d(31) and d(33) were measured. It was shown that one can gain in net polar ordering by starting with a liquid crystalline system. The ratio d(33)/d(31) was found to be much larger than 3 in agreement with the molecular statistical models for electric field poling of liquid crystals.

Abstract: A qualitative description of a spinodal decomposition kinetics is proposed. It is made of a linear stage followed by two nonlinear stages, leading, respectively, to higher and lower frequency generation in the spatial order parameter distribution, then followed by the classical Ostwald ripening. This general scheme is supported by a specific experimental study. It concerns the two-dimensional thickness demixion of copolymer thin films made of three to four bilayers.

Abstract: Structural phase transitions have been found in the mixed fluoroperovskites crystals Rb1-xKxCaF3 (x=0.05, 0.2, 0.35, 0.5, 0.88, 1.0) by optical birefringence and X-ray diffraction.

Profile analysis of powder diffraction lines was performed to determine the change of lattice parameters versus temperature in order to establish the crystal symmetry of each structural phase and to measure the temperatures of the transitions. From the splitting of the 400 cubic Bragg line and consideration of Glazer's classification of tilted octahedra in perovskites, the various types of distortions were found. Sequences of CaF6 tilting octahedra occurring during the phase transitions are suggested and discussed for each concentration.

Abstract: The Raman spectra of RbAlF4 (phase II) and KAlF4 (Phase II and IV) at room temperature were measured under hydrostatic pressure up to 10 GPa and 4 GPa, respectively. While the frequencies of the former do not exhibit any significant singularity against temperature, in the case of KAlF4 a strong frequency jump is observed at 0.21 GPa. This is attributed to the martensitic phase transition already observed as a function of temperature. The pressure dependence of the frequencies in the two compounds is discussed in relation to their structure and the structural phase transitions.

Abstract: The Nd3+ ion energy level scheme in a LiYF4 crystal host is re-examined by absorption spectroscopy and Zeeman measurements. Some other Kramers doublets have been observed. A total of 137 experimental levels has been input in the fitting procedures before the application of the magnetic field. The calculations were performed assuming the approximate D-2d rare-earth site symmetry, and the correct S-4, With all parameters varying freely. In both symmetries we have obtained a rms deviation of 17.7 cm(-1). In the presence of a magnetic field B, linear and non-linear anticrossing degeneracy lifting, together with negligible Kramers degeneracy lifting, has been observed. In particular, with B perpendicular to c, the third component of the (4)G(7/2) level behaves in the former way with a splitting of 22 cm(-1), for B = 6.3 T, and (4)G(5/2) behaves in the latter way (B parallel to c). It was possible only to describe these features all together by introducing the magnetic Hamiltonian mu B(L + g(e)S) in the secular determinant before diagonalization. Then, the 364 eigenstates and eigenfunctions of the 4f(3) configuration are calculated. The isolated doublets in the energy level scheme and having a small value of the g-factor, split linearly. In this situation, the framework of perturbation theory was used to obtain satisfactory splitting s-factors. Those not isolated or with a large g-factor have a non-linear anticrossing behaviour. The splitting of the lowest component of the I-4(9/2) ground-state multiplet is observed through a transition which is present in the lowest Zeeman component of the F-4(7/2) level. This is quite well reproduced by the simulation.

Abstract: The EPR spectra of Gd3+ in two transition metal fluoride glasses (PZG and PBI) have been extensively studied as functions of temperature, Gd3+ concentration and microwave frequency (S, X, K and Q bands). The marked changes observed in the EPR spectra with temperature and concentration imply the existence of pairs of Gd3+ ions. The spectra of isolated Gd3+ ions were obtained at low temperature for samples with low Gd3+ doping concentration. Isolated Gd3+ ions are characterized by a fine-structure b(2)(0)-parameter distribution within the range 0.02-0.15 cm(-1). The simulations of these spectra are computed with a Czjzek finestructure parameter distribution (this solution prohibits the existence of axial symmetry sites). It indicates a decrease of the number of geometrical constraints compared to those for Cr3+ and Fe3+ (octahedral coordination in a fluoride medium), in agreement with the higher Gd3+ coordination numbers. Gd3+-ion sites are found to be more distorted in PZG than in PBI, suggesting that the glass network has an influence on the Gd3+ polyhedron distortion amplitude.

Abstract: Based on physical models of musical instruments and of the human voice, a new generation of sound synthesizers is born: virtual instruments. The models used for wind instruments are simple feedback loops in which a nonlinear sound source drives a linear filter representing the pipe of the instrument. While very rewarding musical sounds have been obtained with these models, it has become obvious that some essential phenomena escape such a description. In particular the brightness of the sound generated by trombones is expected to be due to the essential nonlinearity of the wave propagation in the pipe. At fortissimo levels this leads to shock wave formation observed in our experiments both from pressure measurements and flow visualization. A modest modification of the physical model could already take this phenomenon into account. The key idea is that the nonlinear effect is essential for the transfer of sound from the source toward the listener, but can be ignored in a model of the generation of the pipe oscillations. Abstract: A Brillouin scattering study of the relaxational processes above the calorimetric glass transition temperature T-g (in the 1.2-1.6 T-g temperature range) on polyurethane gels is presented. The specificity of this work is to investigate several samples corresponding to various crosslink densities. The relaxational process observed by Brillouin scattering is compared to low-frequency measurements of the relaxational processes by other techniques: in contrast to low-frequency determinations, the Brillouin scattering relaxation time exhibits an Arrhenius behaviour for all the samples; however, the characteristic parameter of the time distribution width is the same for the two processes. The low-frequency relaxation and the high-frequency Brillouin scattering relaxation seem to merge for temperatures higher than 1.6 T-g and these data are discussed on the basis of different models for the glass transition. The influence of the crosslink density yields an increase of the mean relaxation time with increasing connectivity and small variations of the apparent activation energy. In contrast, the distribution time width is not composition dependent. Nevertheless, the most striking results are that a rescaling to T-g fully accounts for the variations of the mean relaxation time with the crosslink density and a correspondence between the crosslink density and the inverse of the temperature is suggested.

Abstract: Tungsten trioxide thin films obtained by vacuum evaporation of tungsten oxide powder of high purity were analyzed using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RES) and elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) with He-4(+) ions of 2.85 MeV for W, O and H profiling. The films have been deposited onto either C or Si substrates. It has been found that the film stoichiometry depends on the pressure in the vacuum chamber before and during the evaporation process. The films contain water molecules which can be removed easily by heating the samples up to 180 degrees C: in vacuum. Most of the water is then weakly bound to the oxide. It has also been shown that the films mostly adsorb oxygen-containing species during storage in air.

Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to investigate the transverse cracking of cross-ply laminates, subjected to uniaxial tensile loading. For quasi-static tests, most cracks, initiated in the 90 degrees plies, instantaneously cross the entire test specimen width from edge to edge. In this case, the investigation of transverse cracking is reduced to a two-dimensional analysis. A finite element analysis has been implemented and the paper compares the results obtained by finite element analysis and analytical models. These comparisons show that a complete parabolic shear-lag analysis yields a fairly good approximation of the strain and stress distributions obtained by finite element analysis. The results deduced from this analytical model and from finite element analysis, for the longitudinal stiffness reduction as a function of the crack density, are in good agreement with the experimental results obtained for various cross-ply laminates. The complete parabolic shear-lag analysis is then used to develop a statistical damage accumulation process. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

Abstract: Recrystallization of fluoride glasses in the PbF2-ZnF2-GaF3 system (PZG), amorphous GaF3, and amorphous PbGaF5 have been studied by EPR and XRD. Cr3+ and Fe3+ are used as EPR probes for PZG glass. Fe3+ is the only probe used for the amorphous compounds.

The recrystallization of amorphous GaF3 leads to well-crystallized rhombohedral GaF3 (Rh-GaF3). We have determined the fine structure parameters of Fe3+ in Rh-GaF3 from crystalline powder EPR spectrum simulation. We have then studied the evolution of the fine structure parameters along the recrystallization process. Fine structure parameters of GaF3:Cr3+, AlF3, and InF3 crystalline powders (doped with CrF3 and FeF3) were also determined. The superposition model allowed us to compare lattice relaxation around Cr3+ and Fe3+ probes in these compounds. It shows that Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions are well adapted for the EPR studies of Ga3+-containing compounds. Amorphous PbGaF5 recrystallization leads to PbGaF5 powder, whose crystallinity, from a local point of view, is not as good as that obtained by direct solid state synthesis. PZG glass recrystallization leads to a mixture of compounds. EPR spectra changes versus heating time treatment are described and interpreted. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

Abstract: Monodispersed spherical particles (0.1 mu m diameter in the latex phase) of microgels with different crosslinking densities have been synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The theological properties of suspensions of these particles have been studied over a wide concentration range. It is shown that the viscosity (especially at low shear rate) and the dynamic moduli undergo a strong transition when the concentration is such that the particles are closely packed. Increasing the crosslinking density of the spheres leads to an increase of the elastic modulus when the concentration is above this critical concentration. The addition of linear species can be used to adjust the theological properties of the suspensions. Two competing effects are involved. Either the viscosity of the suspending medium is increased or the particles undergo an osmotic deswelling from the linear chains. Molecular weight and concentration of the linear chains can be chosen to promote the desired trend.

The result was reversed, from 4, with Payne's reagent Bromohydroxylation of 4 involved an intermediate bromonium ion syn to the substituents. Haloselenylations occurred with the syn-selectivity from 1, 2, 3 and 4, to the anti-selectivity from 6, and without selectivity from 5. NOE enhancement measurements and several chemical correlations led to the stereochemical assignments. Formation of the intramolecular reaction products 24 and 25 was also pointed out. Abstract: The formation of a transient network by alpha,omega-sodium sulfonato polyisoprene (alpha,omega-NaPIPS) and alpha,omega-lithium sulfonato polystyrene (alpha,omega-LiPSS) in toluene is studied using static and dynamic light scattering and dynamic mechanical analysis. It is shown that at low concentrations aggregates are formed with increasing molar mass and polydispersity as the polymer concentration is increased. Above a certain concentration well below the overlap concentration of the polymer chains (C*), a transient network is formed. This is characterised by a plateau modulus at high frequencies and a relatively narrow viscoelastic relaxation time distribution. The intensity auto-correlation function of the transient network shows two relaxational modes: a relatively fast diffusional mode close to the co-operative diffusional mode of semidilute solutions of the unfunctionalised polymers, and a slow broader mode which becomes independent of the scattering angle at concentrations close to C*. The relation between this slow mode and the viscoelastic relaxation is discussed.

Abstract: According to the Blot theory and other models of propagation, two compressional waves can propagate in a porous medium saturated by air. At low frequencies each wave creates displacements of the same order of magnitude in the fluid and the frame. It is shown that for the case of thin materials bonded onto a rigid impervious backing, at low frequencies the acoustic field can nevertheless be described by only one wave which propagates in the air. This simple description is related to a mixing of both compressional waves which leaves the frame motionless. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The polycondensation of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) bisanhydride with diols and diamines was investigated in order to obtain new complexing agents bearing aminoacetic groups along the polymer chain whose complexing properties should be better than their monomolecular homologues: EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), DTPA... Synthesis conditions have been studied to get linear water-soluble polymers destined to gadolinium complexation. Use of several types of comonomers has allowed us to obtain polycondensates having a varied density of COOH functions which will permit us to study its influence on their complexing properties towards different metallic cations.

Abstract: Caval filters have proved essential to the prog-ess being made in the prevention of recurrent pulmonary embolism. A prospective multicenter study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and possible complications relating to the LGM Vena-Tech percutaneous caval filter, which has been used in Europe since 1989. A total of 222 patients who had undergone LGM Vena-Tech filter placement between September 1989 and December 1991 were included in this study. Two hundred twenty caval filters were positioned via the percutaneous route: 154 of them via the jugular or subclavian vein and 66 via the femoral vein. Two filters could not be implanted. The in-hospital mortality rate was 1.7% (four patients), which included one patient who died of intraoperative recurrent pulmonary embolism. Mean follow-up was 15 months. Forty-one patients died during follow-up (actuarial survival 65.4% +/- 6% at 30 months). There were five cases of recurrent pulmonary embolism (cumulative freedom from pulmonary embolism 93.2% +/- 3.8% at 30 months). Ten patients had thrombosis of the inferior vena cava (actuarial caval patency 94% +/- 3.6% at 30 months). Eight filters (3.6%) migrated over distances that were less than the height of one vertebra. Shifting did not lead to any cases of thrombosis or recurrent pulmonary embolism. Ten filters tilted between 15 and 25 degrees in relation to the inferior vena cava axis. Recurrent pulmonary embolism never occurred concurrently with filter tilting. The LGM Vena-Tech caval filter ensures satisfactory prevention of pulmonary embolism with a low rate of complications. However, because its long-term fate is not known, its use should be restricted to cases in which heparin treatment has failed or is contraindicated.

Abstract: In the new composite materials made of lamellar diblock copolymer and ferrofluidics, the lamellar period L is experimentally shown to depend on the volume fraction Phi of nanoparticles according to: L = L(0)(1 + Phi/3), where L(0) = L(Phi = 0), while L = L(0)(1 + Phi) was rather expected. Knowing that the particles are exclusively located into one of the two polymeric components, we show that these two laws can be established in a simple way from two different assumptions about the spatial distribution of nanoparticles in the host layers. The hypothesis of particles confined in the center of the layers is finally rejected.

Abstract: The structure described is a new polymorph of the one-dimensional material [Pt(en)(2)I-2] [Pt(en)(2)]-ClO4 (en = 1,2-diaminoethane) that occurs when the en ligands are fully deuterated. This structure is novel in that it contains ordered MX chains, a structural feature absent in all MX structures to date. It also represents a rare case of a structural change induced by isotopic substitution. This system presents a unique opportunity to study the interchain interactions that might lead to a fully ordered MX system and the behavior of ordered versus disordered chain systems.

Abstract: Cercarial dermatitis is a parasitic impasse that has worldwide distribution. The condition manifests itself as a highly pruriginous skin rash and is due to penetration of the dermis by larval stages (furcocercariae) of avian trematodes. Many species may be responsible for this disease. In Europe the genus Trichobilharzia is widely represented, in particular by the species T. ocellata; the definitive host is the duck (Anas platyrhinchos); the intermediate hosts are snails of the genus Lymnea (L. ovata or L. stagnalis).

In France, cases of cercarial dermatitis were reported in June and July 1994 to the health authorities of three departements in the Pays de la Loire Region (western France). The epidemiological situation, common to the three maintained ponds that were concerned, is as follows: high level of eutrophication of the sites, colonization of the ponds by L. ovata, and settlement by many duck colonies. The simultaneous occurrence of these three phenomena, combined with long hours of sunshine in the summer, is responsible for most of the foci of cercarial dermatitis recently described in Europe.

Control of this condition is difficult, requiring strict maintenance of bodies of water and if necessary the use of molluscicides such as niclosamide. The use of praziquantel in baits for treating the definitive hosts appears to interrupt the natural cycle of the avian Schistosomatidae.

In the light of the observations reported here and the analysis of recent publications, cercarial dermatitis may be regarded as an emerging disease. Its public health impact needs to be evaluated at the global level.

Abstract: Latitudinal and altitudinal variations of bud burst in western populations of sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt) Liebl) are examined. The phenology of bud burst in 50 populations of sessile oak has been studied in four provenance tests located in France. The authors obtained large variations between populations and these variations are linked to altitude, latitude and spring frost tolerance. The northern populations and those close to the sea level are the latest. These populations are more tolerant to the late spring frost. Due to the geographical structuration, which is linked to adaptative characters, we advise foresters to use sessile oak of local origins.

Abstract: An electron microscopic study of sperm and spermiogenesis revealed the process of formation of the monoaxonemal sperm in Baltoplana magna. Two basal bodies are present in the zone of differentiation of the young spermatid, on either side of an intercentriolar body, but only one develops into a normal flagellum. The other remains as a flagellar bud that disappears after the spermatid has become elongated and the normal flagellum has fused with the spermatid shaft in a distal to proximal direction. The mature sperm has a single incorporated axoneme of the trepaxonematan 9+''1'' configuration, a full ring of longitudinal cortical microtubules, an elongate mitochondrial rod and an elongate nucleus with a number of dense longitudinal chromatin rods. There are no dense bodies present in the spermatids nor in any region of mature sperm.

Abstract: The photosynthetic characteristics of Haslea ostrearia have been studied using cells with or without marennine. The comparison of photosynthesis-irradiance mean curves and of different parameters (alpha, P-m, I-k, I-c, R) shows that photosynthesis of algae is strongly dependent on pigmentation. The maximum net photosynthesis rate (P-m) is higher (X 2.5) in non-pigmented than in blue-pigmented cells. The photosynthetic efficiency (alpha) is lower in pigmented algae and I-k is higher, corresponding, in natural conditions, to irradiance adaptation of photosynthetic mechanisms in relation with the planktonic and benthic stages of the diatom.

Abstract: The structure at 20K of fully deuterated [Pt(en)(2)]-[Pt(en)(2)I-2](ClO4)(4), where en=ethylenediamine, has been determined by neutron diffraction on a single crystal. It is shown that the symmetry is monoclinic with cell parameters a = 16.650(7), b = 5.760(2), c = 14.751(2) Angstrom and beta = 99.19(1)degrees, that is, with respect to the previously reported room-temperature structures, a doubling of the c parameter is observed. The space group is C2/c and the refinements lead to an R value of 0.0374. All the bond lengths (C-C, C-N, C-D, N-D and Cl-O) and angles are consistent with the expected values and the main difference with respect to the previously reported room-temperature structures results in an ordering of the stacking of the ethylenediamines. The iodines are distributed over two sites, which gives two Pt-I distances, 2.712(3) Angstrom, attributed to the Pt-IV-I bond, and 3.048(3) Angstrom, attributed to Pt-II-I. Actually, very weak diffraction peaks that provide evidence for an additional doubling of the a and b parameters are also observed and a space group C2 is therefore proposed. This could result from a very slight ordering of the chains with respect to one another, but, due to the weakness of such signals and the large number of atoms to be considered, no reliable refinement has been obtained in C2. On the other hand, on heating the crystal the diffraction peaks with I odd greatly decrease in intensity between 150 and 160K, which unambiguously argues for the existence of a phase transition presumably connected to an order-disorder of the ethylenediamines.

Abstract: Al-3(PO4)(3)F-2, N2C4H14 is obtained by hydrothermal synthesis using 1,4-diaminobutane as a template. Its structure is related to the ULM-3 type fluorometallophosphates: it is built up from corner-linked [Al-3(PO4)(3)F-2] units composed of three (PO4) tetrahedra, two (AIO(4)F) trigonal bipyramids and one (AlO4F2) octahedron. The subnetwork of the 1,4-diammoniumbutane cations induces a non-centric symmetry. Crystal data: orthorhombic, space group Pbc2(1), a = 10.023(2) Angstrom, b = 18.180(3) Angstrom, c = 15.841(3) Angstrom, V = 2,886.5 Angstrom(3), 2 = 8, R(F) = 2.84%, 4,263 observed reflections [F > 4 sigma(F)].

Abstract: The propagation of acoustic waves in waveguide with variable cross section is considered using multimodal decomposition. The approach adopted is to construct two infinite first-order differential equations for the components of the pressure and the velocity projected over the normal modes. From these an infinite matricial Riccati equation is derived for the impedance matrix, These equations are ordinary differential equations that can be integrated after truncation at a sufficient number of modes and take into account the coupling between modes. The stiffness of the pressure-velocity equations induced by the presence of evanescent modes is avoided by first calculating the impedance matrix along the guide. The method is checked using different examples where the solutions of the plane-wave approximation or the finite element method are known. Results show the method provides simple and accurate means to obtain the acoustic field with correct boundary conditions in a nonuniform guide with no restriction on the flare. Abstract: An X-ray scattering experiment at small angle of incidence from the laterally modulated structure of a grating is reported. The attention is mainly focused on the determination of the linewidth of the different diffracted orders observed in transverse scans parallel to the surface of the grating. It is shown that the width of the different orders decreases when the incident angle increases and that the evolution of the width is consistent with the evolution of the instrumental resolution. It is also shown that if the spatial coherence of the beam is defined by the angular apertures of the incident and outgoing beams a identical behavior is expected at least when the diffracted orders are well separated.

Abstract: Rheological properties of concentrated suspensions of soft spheres have been studied in a concentration range where all the volume is filled by more or less swollen particles. The suspensions appear as soft gels and show a dynamic modulus which is nearly frequency independent. Under shear, an orientation of the deformed spheres at 45 degrees from the velocity lines is observed. Since above a critical concentration, the elastic modulus appears related to the intrinsic softness of the particles, the modulus of the suspension has been calculated theoretically from a simple core-shell model of a swollen individual particle through a minimization of the free energy. A satisfactory agreement is observed with experimental data, using reasonable values of the fitting parameters.

Abstract: We present a formalism for calculating the surface magnon dispersion which uses the matching procedure for the first time, In the present paper this method is detailed and applied in order to calculate the (001) surface magnon dispersion in the [010] and [110] directions in the case of a Heisenberg cubic antiferromagnet. First, a secular equation is derived which is shown to contain particularly all the information on the dispersion curves, Dispersion curves of the surface magnons are obtained within a single framework by matching the evanescent and travelling solutions, respectively, of the secular equation, satisfying surface boundary conditions. A significant result is that the surface magnon is found to be the sum of evanescent waves.

Abstract: Magnetic excitations on the (001) surface of simple cubic crystal have been studied in the case of semi-infinite Heisenberg frustrated antiferromanets, using the matching procedure methods. A detailed application of the matching procedure is presented in order to calculate the surface magnon. The magnon dispersion curve is calculated as a function of the frustration parameter J(AB)(1 nu)/J(AA(BB)(2 nu)), where J(AB)(1 nu) and J(AA(BB)(2 nu)) represent the nearest and next nearest neighbour exchange interactions, respectively. In this paper, we focus our attention on the values of J(AB)(1 nu)/J(2 nu)/(AA(BB)) > 4, a range for which J(2 nu)/(AA(BB)) interactions are frustrated, while a magnetic phase transition is observed for J(1 nu)/((AB))/J(AA(BB)(2 nu) approximate to 4. When J1 nu/(AB)/J((AA(BB)(2 nu)) > 4, the behaviour of the bulk magnon as well as acoustic and optical surface spin waves are very sensitive to the surface exchange and anisotropy. The evolution of acoustic and optical surface modes are interpreted by means of a frustration parameter.

Abstract: This Note describes a method to determine the viscous characteristic length Lambda from an analysis and a linear regression of the dispersion curve. This approach is valid in the high frequency domain, above 20 kHz, where some asymptotic expansions simplify the theoretical equations. It is shown that there is a linear relationship between the squared propagation index and the inverse of the square root of the frequency which has a slope proportional to Lambda, the thermal characteristic length Lambda' and some physical constants. The value of Lambda' is determined using the Brunauer, Emmet and Teller (BET) method. Low frequency ultrasound, in the 40-200 kHz range, is used to perform the experiments. The computation of the dispersion curve from the experimental waveforms is done by using the phase spectrum method, as was outlined in a previous Note, i.e., Brown et al., C.R. Acad Sci. Paris, 319, Series II, 1994, p. 393.

Abstract: The influence of the Cl-35/Cl-37 isotopic disorder of natural chlorine on the Raman and infrared lineshapes of the vibrational modes in PtCl chains was calculated as a function of the interionic force constants in a one-dimensional model. It is shown that the fine structure of the Raman line is strongly dependent of the Pt-3+delta-Cl and Pt-3-delta-Cl force constants, and so it can be used to estimate the charge disproportion delta. From the case of [Pt(en)(2)][Pt(en)(2)Cl-2](ClO4)(4) it appears that the description of the high-wavenumber infrared line (v(2)) requires one to take into account interactions with more distant ions. It is also shown that the intensity of the low-wavenumber infrared-active mode (v(3)) is so weak that the corresponding line may have never been observed.

Abstract: A general Hamiltonian H of electrons in finite concentration, interacting via any two-body coupling inside a crystal of arbitrary dimension. is considered. For simplicity and without loss of generality, a one-band model is used to account for the electron-crystal interaction. The electron motion is described in the Hilbert space S-phi, spanned by a basis of Slater determinants of one-electron Bloch wave functions. Electron pairs of total momentum K and projected spin zeta=0,+/-1 are considered in this work. The Hamiltonian then reads H=H-D+Sigma(K,zeta)H(K,zeta), where H-D consists of the diagonal part of H in the Slater determinant basis. H-K,H-zeta describes the off-diagonal part of the two-electron scattering process which conserves K and zeta. This Hamiltonian operates in a subspace of S-phi, where the Slater determinants consist of pairs characterized by the same K and zeta. It is shown that the whole set of eigensolutions psi, epsilon of the time-independent Schrodinger equation (H-epsilon)psi=0 divides into two classes, psi(1),epsilon(1) and psi(2),epsilon(2). The eigensoIutions of class 1 are characterized by the property that for each solution psi(1),epsilon(1) there is a single K and zeta such that (H-D + H-K,H-zeta-epsilon(1))psi(K,zeta)=0 where, in general, psi(1) not equal psi(K,zeta), whereas each solution psi(2),epsilon(2). of class 2 fulfills (H-D - epsilon(2))psi(2)=0. We prove also that the eigenvectors of class I have off-diagonal long-range order, whereas those of class 2 do not. Finally, our result shows that off-diagonal long-range order is not a sufficient condition for superconductivity.

Abstract: Two numerical models, 20 and 30, have been developed in order to study the behaviour of cross-ply laminates during multiplication of transverse cracks. The displacement and stress fields have been evaluated by the finite-element method in an elementary cell which is characteristic of regularly spaced cracks. The longitudinal stiffness reduction has then been deduced as a function of the transverse crack multiplication. In the case of quasi-static tensile tests, the 20 model has been used to estimate the initiation and development of transverse cracking. The different numerical results obtained have been compared with experimental results. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited

Abstract: The results of high-resolution synchrotron x-ray-scattering experiments on the normal-incommensurate phase transition in Rb2ZnCl4 are reported. Measured critical exponents for the intensities of the first three harmonics of the incommensurate modulation wave below T-c agree well with theoretical predictions for the n=2, D=3 (SD-XY) universality class. The scattering observed above T-c corrresponds to critical fluctuations on two distinct length scales: the critical exponents for the short length scale component of the scattering agree with those expected for the 3D-XY universality class. The value found for the exponent of the inverse correlation length of the long length scale component is nu(s)=0.7+/-0.2. A comparison of data taken in Laue and Bragg geometries at different photon energies suggests that the second length scale scattering originates in the near-surface region. Possible explanations of the two length scale behavior are discussed.

Abstract: The present Note describes a comparison between experimental data and theoretical predictions for the surface acoustical impedance of fibrous materials used in the automotive industry. The theoretical tool used in this work is the standard Allard-Johnson-Cbampoux model designed for air-saturated materials, which includes 5 parameters, i.e. the porosity, the flow resistivity, the tortuosity, and the two characteristic lengths. The last three parameters are determined with low-frequency ultrasonic techniques. The present comparison, for the first time with fibrous materials, is done with no adjustable parameter, and the agreement is generally excellent.

Abstract: A new cesium zirconosilicate, Cs2ZrSi6O15, is obtained by hydrothermal synthesis at T=1083K, P=218MPa. Despite a systematic crystal twinning, the structure was determinated from X-ray diffraction crystal data. Cs2ZrSi6O15 is monoclinic, C2/m, a=26.61(1)Angstrom, b=7.506(2)Angstrom, c=11.602(4)Angstrom, beta=107.43(2)degrees, Z=6. The structure can be described from the stacking of silicate Si6O156- slabs linked by ZrO6 octahedra, or by a slightly distorted ABCA... compact type packing of ZrSi6O22 Secondary Building Units. Cesium atoms are located in large cavities with X, XII and XIII coordination; Cs-O distances vary from 2.98 Angstrom to 3.75 Angstrom. The connection of cesium polyhedra involves vertex or edge sharing along all the possible directions. This feature explains the low cesium release of Cs2ZrSi6O15 at high temperature.

Abstract: New mixed valence iron oxides (Pb(1-x)A(x))Sr4Fe2O9-delta have been isolated for the composition range 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5 and A = Cd, Hg. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) refinements and chemical analysis data demonstrated that both compounds exhibit a significant non-stoichiometry in intermediate rock salt-type [(Pb, A)O](infinity) layers. Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements performed at 4.2 and 300 K showed the existence of several iron sites which have been assigned to individual high spin Fe(III) and to a temperature-dependent intermediate valence state Fe(IV - Delta) due to electron hopping between iron sites.

Abstract: The energy cost of walking using a reciprocating gait orthosis (RGOII) with functional electrical stimulation (FES) was assessed in 14 patients with spastic complete paraplegia from six rehabilitation centres, Before and after training asing RGOII with FES, the subjects performed a progressive maximal test on an arm-crank ergometer to obtain their laboratory peak oxygen uptake (LVO(2peak)), heart rate (HR) and blood lactate concentration changes. At the end of the training session, oxygen uptake (VO2) was measured during a walking test with orthosis at different speeds (6 min steady state at 0.1 m . s(-1), followed by 2-min stages at progressively increasing speeds up to exhaustion). Of the subjects 4 repeated this test using orthosis without FES. At a speed of 0.1 m . s(-1), VO2 represented 47 (SD 23)% of LVO(2peak), mean HR was 137 (SD 21) beats . min(-1) and mean blood lactate concentration 2.4 (SD 1.4) mmol . l(-1). Maximal speed ranged from 0.23 to 0.5 m . s(-1). At maximal speed, VO2 was 91 (SD 18)% of LVO(2peak), mean HR reached 96 (SD 7)% and mean blood lactate concentration only 52 (SD 19)% of the maximal values measured during the laboratory test, Walking without electrical stimulation induced an increase in HR but there was no difference in VO2 and blood lactate compared to walking with stimulation. The training period did not result in any improvement in maximal physiological data, We concluded that the free cadence walking speed with orthosis remains much lower than that of able-bodied people or wheelchair users, The metabolic cost at a given speed is much higher even if, using a stimulation device, the cardiovascular stress is reduced.

Abstract: Musical sound can be generated from numerical solutions obtained from simple physical models of wind-instruments. We call such synthesizers 'virtual instruments'. Crude caricatures capture the global oscillation behaviour of original instruments, providing the musician with a means of expression comparable to that obtained when playing real instruments. Music is, however, produced by details of the flow which correspond to much smaller temporal and spatial scales than the control of the global oscillation. This suggests that one has to split the physical model into two distinct parts: a simple numerical oscillator followed by a complex sound production module, driven by the output of the first module. We illustrate the background of this idea by a discussion of the clarinet, the human voice, and the trombone.

Abstract: Our interest is the study of magnetic properties on organic compounds. We have previously reported a new class of molecular magnets based on aminonaphthalenesulfonic acid and aniline. In this work we explore theoretically a simple model based on superposed aniline molecules and the goal is to determine the mechanism that stabilizes the parallel alignment of the spin component. Calculations were performed within the local density approximation (LDA). The results obtained show a high sensitivity of the magnetic coupling relative to translations and rotations of one aniline molecule with respect to the other. Distances between both NH units have also a great importance in the spin stabilization. These results are in good accordance with some synthesis difficulties.

Abstract: A bound semi-infinite two-dimensional crystalline system is considered with an isolated inhomogeneity in the form of a semi-infinite linear atomic chain differing in elastic constants from the rest of the system. This is a precursor model to develop a method for determining the frequencies of the localized vibrational modes on the extremity of isolated inhomogeneities that break the translation symmetry in two directions in boundaries. To treat both the localized states and diffraction problems, the mathematical framework of the matching method is generalized from one to two dimensions. Only the localized modes analysis is presented. This formalism leads to a complete representation of the two-dimensional evanescent vibrational field in the neighbourhood of an isolated inhomogeneity, It is an analytical approach that is independent of the nanostructure of the isolated inhomogeneity, which makes it easy to extend to a variety of real problems. Numerical results for the frequencies of the modes localized on the extremity of the semi-infinite chain in the boundary are given for a case study. The method can be applied systematically to analyze the dynamics of extended surface defects such as steps, ridges or lines of substitute atoms.

Abstract: Solutions of polystyrene in DOP were studied as a function of the concentration (0.2-0.9 g/mL) and temperature (-10 to +130 degrees C) using static and dynamic light scattering. The concentration and temperature dependence of the cooperative diffusion coefficient and the osmotic modulus were determined. The concentration and temperature dependences of the cooperative diffusion coefficient are explained in terms of the concentration and temperature dependence of the osmotic modulus and the solvent mobility. At the concentrations studied, the effect of hydrodynamic interactions is small. Close to the glass transition temperature the solvent mobility is the dominant factor and can be treated in terms of the free volume theory.

Abstract: Introduction. In continental France, Hansen's disease is now a strictly imported disease. Native contamination is rare since the foyers described early in the century have totally disappeared.

Case report. A case of locally acquired diffuse lepromatous Hansen's disease was observed in a patient who developed acrocyanosis with distal necrosis over a period of several years. Late cutaneomucal signs led to the diagnosis of Hansen's disease after eliminating sarcoidosis and tuberculosis. Skin biopsy with Ziehl stain confirmed the lepromatous nature of the disease. In addition the patient had undergone splenectomy following trauma and also developed babesiasis (a rare protozoan disease in Europe-15 cases reported-similar to Texas fever).

Discussion. The source of infection in this case of Hansen's disease was not found. As in the other cases reported in the literature, late diagnosis due to lack of any suggestive context allowed the disease to develop into an advanced stage.

Abstract: The analysis of a growth kinetics y(t) is carried out using the generalized logistic model of Richards - Nelder. Two types of processes, termed mono- and multi-logistic, on be distinguished.

In a mono-logistic process, the phenomenon is adequately described by only one logistic function. The growth kinetics is then characterized by the properties of each of phases G(1) to G(4), with boundaries defined by the singular points Gamma(max), V-max and Gamma(min) (Buis, 1991, 1993). The growth structure (temporal or diachronic structure) is defined by the relative contribution of the various phases to the expression of the total growth (duration, growth amount, in relative values per phase, independently of y(max)). This temporal distribution of the growth activity is a discretized representation of the trajectory y(0) --> y(max).

A multi-logistic process corresponds to any growth kinetics which is the sum of 2 or several generalized logistics. The number of singular points (local extrema of V and Gamma), and therefore the number of phases G, are then higher than in the mono-logistic case. The growth structure defines precisely the kinetics of the phenomenon as well as the relative importance of the various logistic components in the course of time.

The application presented concerns the growth of the pleuridiophoral cells of the alga Antithamnion plumula (Rhodophyceae, Ceramiales). Cells elongation is of the bi-logistic type. The elongation growth structure characteristics afford a clear discrimination between the sporophyte and the male and female gametophytes. Whereas component 1 (which is the more important at the beginning of growth) hardly changes, component 2 varies dramatically with the thallus ploidy. In contrast, there are few differences between the two gametophytes.

The growth structure concept is thus liable to lead to original results. Beyond the example selected, the approach considered is put forward as a simple but precise characterization method for any growth kinetics based on temporal variations of the growth activity [(V, Gamma) couple].

Abstract: The dynamics for a model system of an isolated infinite step in a surface are presented. The model is simple, treating the monatomic step as the interface between two coupled semi-infinite and single semi-infinite atomic layers. The breakdown of translational symmetry perpendicular to the step edge gives rise to several Rayleigh-like branches localized in the neighbourhood of the step. It is seen that a step may lift the polarization degeneracy of the ordered surface Rayleigh mode along the atomic rows parallel to and in the neighbourhood of the step edge. Typical dispersion curves for these modes along the step edge are given with their polarizations. The vibrational Green functions are calculated for the system, and the spectral densities are presented numerically for atomic sites that constitute a minimum representative set in the neighbourhood of the step. A hyperfine resonance structure is obtained that permits the analysis of the evolution of the dynamics from one half-space to the other.

Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to investigate the progressive transverse cracking across the width of cross-ply laminates, subjected to uniaxial fatigue tests. First a finite element analysis is implemented for a crack partly spanning the width of an elementary cell. The influence of the crack length across the specimen width is studied. Then, it is shown how the results can be used in the case of a random distribution of transverse cracks observed in fatigue tests. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

Abstract: A Mossbauer study on powder samples of the two series of iron based oxides ASr(3)Fe(2)O(8) and ASr(4)Fe(2)O(9) where A is a 5d(10) cation (A = Tl3+, Pb4+, Hg2+) is reported. In both families, the thermal evolution of the Mossbauer spectra associated with susceptibility measurements provides evidence for a mixture of high-spin localized Fe3+ and Fe4+ at low temperature and of different mixed valence states at higher temperatures, which are interpreted in terms of a dynamical electron delocalization. The number of intermediate-valence iron sites observed by Mossbauer spectroscopy depends on the magnitude of the hopping frequency with respect to the characteristic Fe-57 Mossbauer frequency. This process, governed by both the temperature and the mean charge of the A cations, is also demonstrated by the electronic conductivity measurements. Because of the low dimensionality of the structure, O-9 compounds allow the electron delocalization to start at lower temperatures than in the O-8 family.

Abstract: An investigation of the incommensurate phases II and III of biphenyl by X-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in a photo-excited state of hydrogenated and deuterated phenanthrene probe is presented. Some results in the high temperature phase are recalled. The spin Hamiltonian parameters in the incommensurate phases are given and their analysis shows that the phenanthrene molecules turn round a perpendicular direction to the long axis while the biphenyl molecules twist around it. The EPR spectra of the phenanthrene allow us to give an easier conclusion about the Iq bi-domain structure of the biphenyl phase II than the naphthalene ones. However, other complexities arise. The comparison of the results obtained with the phenanthrene and naphthalene probes show that these two molecules are complementary.

In particular it is shown that the agreements arising from the bargaining cannot be equitable, and for that reason they include only a limited number of countries.

Abstract: The compression coefficient and the mean curvature coefficient of a composite of an A-B diblock copolymer charged with nanoparticles depend on the concentration of nanoparticles and on the dissymmetry of the copolymer chains. Concerning the curvature coefficient, a distinction must be done between an adiabatic and an isotherm coefficient when the copolymer chains are not symmetric or when Phi is not zero. Finally, the AB interfaces of the composite film present a spontaneous curvature that we calculate in the approximation of ''small'' nanoparticles.

Abstract: By using Monte Carlo simulation, polymer chains of various flexibility and thickness can be constructed inside pores of various geometries. This allows to evaluate the corresponding steric partition coefficient K and the chromatographic radius R(c) defined as the radius of the rigid sphere with the same K value. When comparing with R(eta) defined as the radius of the sphere with the same product [eta] M, R(c)/R(eta) is clearly different from 1, and is not strictly independent of the flexibility and the relative thickness of the macromolecule. However, this ratio is generally almost stable and experimentally, for flexible polymers, the so-called universal calibration (UC) is often found to work well despite the lack of academic evidence.

Abstract: Primary deep venous valvular insufficiency causes reflux syndrome. Angioscopy permits the surgeon not only to ascertain that venous valves have not been destroyed but to perform external valvuloplasty under visual control with the valves under pressure. We have performed angioscopy-assisted venous valvuloplasty in three men (mean age 36 years; range 30 to 38 years) and one woman (age 58 years). All four patients had class 3 disease (SVS/ISCVS classification). Descending phlebograms showed grade 3 reflux in one patient and grade 4 reflux in three patients. In all patients angioscopy-assisted valvuloplasty of the superficial femoral vein was combined with wrapping with a segment of polytetrafluoroethylene prosthesis, stripping of incompetent superficial veins, and subfascial ligation of perforating veins. Mean follow-up was 12 months (range 6 to 17 months). In three patients ulcers healed and did not recur; in the remaining patient nearly complete healing was obtained after skin grafting. In all patients ambulatory venous blood pressure improved significantly and venous filling time returned to normal (>15 seconds). At duplex ultrasonography and descending phlebography, no residual reflux was demonstrated. At final follow-up, all repaired valves were patent and competent. Our experience demonstrates that angioscopy-assisted venous valvuloplasty combines the accuracy of valvuloplasty by means of phlebotomy and the simplicity of external valvuloplasty and thus is preferred to either of these methods.

Abstract: beta-diketonic monomers derived from styrene, p-vinylbenzoyltrifluoroacetone (1), p-vinylbenzoylacetone (2), p-vinylbenzoylacetophenone (3), 1-(p-vinylphenyl)-5,5-(ethylenedioxy)hexane-1,3-dione (4) and 1-(p-vinylphenyl)-5-phenyl-5,5-(ethylenedioxy)pentane-1,3-dione (5), were prepared by condensation of p-vinylacetophenone with adequate esters. The homopolymerisation of these monomers essentially gives insoluble resins of low interest in the photoreticulation field. On the contrary, their copolymerisation with styrene and methyl acrylate affords soluble polymers with side chain enolised 1,3-diketonic moities allowing to expect their photoreticulation by a De Mayo reaction with p-divinylbenzene. Monomers and polymers, were characterised by H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopies. The C-13 NMR chemical shifts were used to evaluate the Alfrey Price reactivity parameters of the monomers and to calculate relative percentages of the enol forms in monomers and polymers. The molecular characteristics of polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography.

Abstract: Introduction. The glucagonoma syndrome is an uncommon but well-known entity associating erythema necroticans migrans (ENM) with glucagonoma.

Case report. A 43-year-old man with a past history of alcoholic cirrhosis and ascitis was hospitalized for skin disorders which had developed over the past 4 months. Centrifugal erythematous skin lesions were observed, some with non-turgid bullae and marginal desquamation, others with an erosive center. Lesions first appeared on the hands then diffused widely without involving the periorifical areas, folds and lower limbs. Laboratory results revealed an anemia, hypovitaminosis K, cholestatic liver failure, a beta-gamma block and low zinc levels. Histology study of the skin biopsy demonstrated a << Neapolitan trench >> image suggestive of ENM. A paraneoplasic syndrome and pancreas tumor were not found. Despite supplementation with zinc, amino acids and vitamins, the patient died from his liver disease.

Discussion. There have been 4 cases of ENM reported in the literature, all in cirrhosis patients, two of which had low zinc levels. Our case is thus the third with cirrhosis and low zinc. Bazer's syndrome, acrodermatitis enteropathica, annular chronic lupus erythematosis and annular superficial pemphigus were eliminated as possible diagnoses. The failure of zinc and amino acid supplementation would favor the secondary nature of the zinc deficiency and the predominant role of cirrhosis in this skin disease. The possible role of essential fatty acids in ENM is raised.

Abstract: The incommensurate phase II of biphenyl is a bi-domain one. The naphthalene paramagnetic molecular probes used in this experiment permit the differentiation of these two domains: each Electron Paramagnetic Resonance line of the high temperature phase of biphenyl gives rise to two incommensurate lines in the phase II. But by applying a relevant shear stress, one favours one domain; this behaviour is observed on the E.P.R. spectra which exhibit only one incommensurate line. These results complete the ones obtained about the domain structure of phase II of biphenyl.

Abstract: A theoretical and experimental study is presented of the aeroelastic instability of the human soft palate, which can explain the occurrence of snoring. The soft palate is modelled by a beam clamped at its leading edge and free at its trailing edge. The continuous and discrete cases are investigated. Only the two first modes of vibration of the soft palate are taken into account. The flow is incompressible, inviscid and one-dimensional. Structural damping and flow nonstationarities can be considered. Theory shows that the soft palate loses its stability by flutter and that this instability is mainly controlled by a single dimensionless parameter which can be easily interpreted from a medical point of view. An experimental apparatus which produces sounds very close to human snoring is described. Agreement between theory and experiments is good. (C) 1995 Academic Press Limited

Abstract: We demonstrate that the superposition model is applicable to the calculation of the zero-field splitting [ZFS] Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) parameters b(n)(m) for the Gd3+ ion in ThBr4 host crystal. The ZFS parameters are also calculated on the basis of a relaxation model which takes into account distortions of the Br--Gd3+ bonds. The temperature variations of the b(n)(m) indicate precursor effects near the temperature of transition between the normal and incommensurate phase. The possibility of calculation of b(n)(m) by the superposition model of the parameters measured at 103 K has also been discussed.

Abstract: A theoretical formalism for calculating the spin-wave spectrum, as well as the spin-wave density of states, is developed in the case of an infinite frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet. These systems are described as two ferromagnetic cubic lattices, antiferromagnetically coupled, and the magnetic frustration results from the competition of antiferromagnetic interactions between first (J(1)) and second (J(2)) nearest neighbours. The mathematical description of the Hamiltonian proposed in the present paper includes exchange interactions extended to second-nearest neighbours, external magnetic field, anisotropic field, and antisymmetric exchange (Dzyalozhinsky-Moriya coupling). The spin-wave spectrum and the density of states are analyzed as functions of the magnetic frustration through the ratio J(1)/J(2). The soft magnetic spin-wave mode which is evidenced for J(1)/J(2) approximate to 4 is consistent with the presence of a magnetic phase transition previously predicted by computer simulations.

Abstract: We study the static properties of solutions of randomly branched poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) obtained near the gelation threshold by measuring their structure factor using static-light scattering experiments. The picture of the initial (not yet diluted) system is consistent with a hierarchical interpenetration of the aggregates, as predicted by the percolation theory. The dilution creates in the system a characteristic length dependent on concentration, beyond which excluded-volume interactions are screened. This length is proportional to the apparent radius of gyration R(ga). The concentration dependences of R(ga) and the apparent molar mass M(a) associated with R(ga) are determined by a Guinier analysis of the light scattering data. The self-similarity of the size distribution of the aggregates is clearly shown by the master curve representing the static structure factor of the system S-z(q) as a function of q . R(ga).

Abstract: Electron paramagnetic resonance and Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements of phosphate glasses doped with Fe-57 isotope enriched Fe2O3 have been carried out. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra have been computer simulated using an approach based on the eigenfield method applied to the 'rhombic' spin Hamiltonian, which contains only the Zeeman and quadrupole fine structure terms, In order to account for the structural disorder in glass, different distribution densities of fine structure parameters D and E have been tried: a two-dimensional Gaussian function of D and lambda = \E/D\ and 'Czjzek's and related functions'. An agreement between the experimental and computer simulated spectra found with the Gaussian distribution density suggests the presence of a large fraction of Fe3+ sites with axial or feebly rhombic distortions (lambda less than or equal to 0.08), The mean value of the axial fine structure parameter D is consistent with a highly distorted environment of Fe3+ ions in the phosphate glasses (but somewhat less in comparison with the berate glasses), It is shown that the g(ef) = 2.0 absorption in the phosphate glasses consists of two different features: a narrow one results from Fe3+ ions isolated in the glass matrix, while the broad one is due to crystallite inclusions.

Abstract: A Nd:GdF3 single crystal is investigated in terms of absorption and emission properties. It is found that the absorption spectrum around 796 nm has a bandwidth broader than in Nd:YAG or Nd:YLF. As a matter of fact, the absorption band is well fitted to the emission of AlGaAs pump diodes. In the 1050 to 1070 nm region, the emission spectrum is strongly polarized and high peaks are observed at 1051 and 1064 nm. Room-temperature laser emission was achieved under Ti:sapphire pumping for different orientations of the Nd:GdF3 crystal. An optical efficiency of 25% with a 33% slope efficiency was measured. Then Nd:GdF3 could be a serious candidate for microlaser applications compared to standard materials like Nd:YVO4.

Abstract: A new form of K2AlF5 . H2O has been prepared under hydrothermal conditions, i.e., 650 degrees C, 1800 bar. It is monoclinic: a = 6.133(3) Angstrom, b = 7.475(4) Angstrom, c = 6.142(3) Angstrom, beta = 97.17(2)degrees, rho = 2.59 g cm(-3), Z = 2, space group P2(1)/m. The crystal structure has been determined using 737 independent single-crystal X-ray reflections (R = 0.030, R(w) = 0.028) and is isotypic with the low-temperature form of K2MnF5 . H2O. It is characterized by slightly kinked endless chains of aluminium octahedra sharing opposite corners and running along the [010] direction. The water molecule is not coordinated to the aluminium atom, but is linked by two hydrogen bonds, O-H ... F, to two successive [AlF6] octahedra of the same chain. The potassium atoms are 12-coordinated by 10 fluorine atoms and two water molecules. K2AlF5 . H2O can be easily and reversibly dehydrated at 80-100 degrees C to tetragonal K2AlF5: a = 5.965(1) Angstrom, c = 3.699(1) Angstrom, Z = 1, space group P4/mmm. Its crystal structure is deduced from that of the monohydrated form and both are described with the same framework.

Abstract: The physico-chemical stability and the compatibility between a 2.5-mg/ml methotrexate solution and plastic syringes were studied over a 7 day period at +4 and 25 degrees C. During this study, pH was determined and MTX degradation products were assayed by HPLC. The compatibility study consisted of the titration of reducing substances, TLC of extracted additives, assay of extracted ions by AAS, resistivity measurement, dynamometric test and UV, visible and IR absorption spectrophotometry. Stability and compatibility studies showed that 2.5 mg/ml methotrexate parenteral solution remained chemically stable in a plastic syringe over a period of 7 days under the tested conditions.

We shall characterise the 4-regular plane graphs which contain two orthogonal A-trails, that is to say two A-trails for which no subtrail of length 2 appears in both A-trails. Our proof gives rise to a polynomial algorithm for deciding if two such A-trails exists. We shall also discuss the corresponding problem for graphs in the projective plane and the torus, and the related problem of deciding when a 2-regular digraph contains two orthogonal Euler trails. Abstract: 0K Magnetic configurations are discussed in the case of infinite ferrimagnetic cubic systems, without accounting for quantum fluctuations effects. Two kinds of magnetic frustrated configurations originating a magnetic phase transition, were evidenced according to the values of exchange interactions between first (J(AB)(lv)) and second (J(AA(BB))(2v)) nearest neighbours. We report on the evolution of the constraint function F-c, versus ratio J(AA)(lv)/J(AA(BB))(2v), for each set of values (S-1, S-2), and the use of present graphic representation in order to predict some 0K magnetic configurations.

Abstract: The modifications of the crystallographic structure of PrNiO3 associated to the decrease of the metal insulator temperature T-M-I with external pressure (P-max approximate to 5 kbar) have been investigated by means of neutron powder diffraction. The most interesting finding is the unexpected evolution of the tilt angle phi of the NiO6 octahedra which, in contrast to the results reported for other isostructural compounds, decreases under pressure. A simple charge-transfer scheme is used to relate the evolution of phi to the decrease of T-M-I upon pressure.

Abstract: The present work concerns the photodegradation of macromolecules having phenyl and carbonyl groups along the main chain. The photochemical behaviour of different polyketones is expected to give useful information about the mechanisms of the reaction. With this purpose we have considered polyketones constituted of 3-oxo-1,-1 diphenylbutane-1,4 diyl (I) units regularly head to tail linked, and polyketones of 3-oxo-1-2-diphenylbutane-1-4 diyl units (II and III). The synthesis of I by hydrolysis of polymers of 3 acetoxy-1,1-diphenylbutane-1-3 diene 2a and II, III by hydrolysis of polymers of 3-acetoxy-1,2 (and 1,4)-diphenylbutane-1,3 (5a, 8a) were successful. The tests of polymerization of trimethylsiloxy monomers have not been conclusive; the photochemical behaviour of these polyketones is in good agreement with the previously observed mechanism of degradation of polyketones having alpha phenyl or beta phenyl carbonyl groups.

Abstract: For every matroid M, H. Crape defined an invariant beta(M) which reflects some connectivity properties of M. We adapt the definition of this invariant to isotropic systems. As an application we study the properties of an invariant beta(4)(H) defined by P. Martin for any 4-regular graph H,and we show that beta(4)(H) is related with the cyclic edge-connectivity of H.

Abstract: Detailed EPR and x-ray studies of the static critical behaviour in KGaF4 are reported. All measurements were performed on single crystals. Dilatometric experiments have allowed us to characterize the II-->III phase transition. It is accompanied by a contraction of the a and b parameters, which is consistent with a rotation of the GaF6 octahedra around the c axis, and by an anomaly along the c direction. The first-order character of the structural phase transition has been demonstrated using EPR and diffractometric measurements. DSC experiments have allowed us to conclude that this discontinuity is weak. In addition, the interpretation of the phase transition in the continuous or quasi-continuous approach (i.e. beta=0.140+/-0.006 for 0.10x10(-4)less than or equal to 10.53x10(-2) and T-C=201.83 degrees C) has allowed us to conclude that this latter is essentially of a 2D character.

Abstract: We have carried out a theoretical study of the (001) surface magnon dispersion curves. Their localized energy states are calculated by the Green function and matching procedure methods which are used simultaneously in the case of semi-infinite cubic frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets. Magnetic frustration phenomena originate from competing effects between first neighbour (J(AB)(1 nu)) and second neighbour (J(AA(BB))(2 nu) interactions. This magnetic frustation is quantized by the J(AB)(1 nu)/J(AA(BB))(2 nu) approximate to 4, a magnetic phase transition also exists at the surface, as previously observed in the bulk, in accordance with the results predicted by computer simulation.

Abstract: Hydrosoluble poly(3,6,9-trioxaundecamethylene phosphonate) with attached cytotoxic bis(2-chloroethyl)amine in the side chain was synthesized by chemical modification of the corresponding polyphosphonate via the Atherton-Todd reaction. The structure of the product was confirmed by H-1, C-13 and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. Preliminary in vitro cytotoxic studies revealed that the polymeric derivative exhibited an eight fold more cytotoxic potency against human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG2 than against murine leukemia cell line L1210.

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the energy transfer process which takes place in LiYF4 codoped with a lanthanide Nd3+(4f(3)) and an actinide U3+(5f(3)). Excitation spectra and decay profiles of the Nd3+ provide evidence of resonant non radiative energy transfer from Nd3+ to U3+ ions. From the analysis of the fluorescence decays of Nd3+ for several codoped samples, the microparameter C-DD, linked to the energy migration of Nd-3+ and the microparameter C-DA, related to the direct interaction between Nd3+ and U3+ ions have been obtained using the Yokota model. Moreover, the C-DA parameter deduced from the fit is compared to the one obtained with the calculated oscillator strengths.

Abstract: We make a theoretical study of the (001) surface magnons dispersion curves. Their localized energy states are calculated by Green function and matching procedure methods which are used simultaneously in the case of semi-infinite cubic frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets. Magnetic frustration phenomena originate from competing effects between the first neighbor (J(AB)(1 nu)) and second neighbor (J(AA(BB))(2 nu)) interactions. This magnetic frustration is quantized by the J(AB)(1 nu)/J(AA(BB))(2 nu) ratio. It is the first time that such a detailed application of the matching procedure is presented in order to calculate the surface magnon dispersion. It is found that, when J(AB)(1 nu)/J(AA(BB))(2 nu) approximate to 4, a magnetic phase transition also exists at the surface, as previously observed in the bulk, in accordance with the results predicted by computer simulation.

Abstract: Microcristalline material of CuRuO2(OH)(4) has been synthesised by precipitation and the X-ray powder diffraction pattern was measured. By automatic indexing an orthorhombic cell was evidenced with a = 4.2081(2), b = 8.4872(4), c = 3.0331(1) Angstrom. In the space group Cmmm ''\F-obs\'' amplitude structure factors were extracted by the LE BAIL method. Direct methods permitted to locate one metal and two oxygen positions with the entire data set. RIETVELD refinements of 19 parameters, using 123 reflections, lead to R(WP) = 0.08 and R(Bragg) = 0.03.

The metal position is occupied statistically with copper and ruthenium and is surrounded by a nearly regular octahedron of anions. The square base plane of this octahedron consists of hydroxide-anions, the apical positions are occupied by oxide anions. Each of these octahedron shares two opposite edges of the square base plane with two other octahedrons, so that linear chains are built up. Each octahedron is also connected to two others by sharing the apical corners, so that the chains construct two-dimensional planes, which are not connected to each other, but by possible hydrogen-bonds. Several models of local ordering are discussed.

Abstract: The new oxomercurate BaHgRuO5 is synthesised by oxygen high pressure technique (5000 bars). Its structure is determined ab initio from conventional X-ray powder diffraction data by the direct methods. The cell is hexagonal (space group P6(3)/m, Z = 6) with a = 10.1760(1) Angstrom and c = 8.4121(1) Angstrom. Electron microdiffraction confirms the Laue class. Refinements of 34 parameters by the Rietveld method, using 541 reflections lead to R(Bragg) = 0.040 and R(p) = 0.096. The structure is built up from RuO5 trigonal bipyramid groups sharing the two apical oxygen atoms exclusively with dumb-bell like HgO2 groups. Three of each of these groups form isolated [OHgO(RuO3)](3) rings between which the barium atoms are inserted either in tricapped trigonal prisms or icosahedrons, both distorted. A relationship with the Ba[RuO3(OH)(2)] structure is evidenced. This structural similarity of an hydroxide and an oxomercurate leads to an alternative synthesis technique by precipitation. By this way also isotypic SrHgRuO5 and structurally related Sr3HgRu3O11(OH)(4) are produced and characterised by X-ray powder diffraction.

Abstract: The entropy Delta S-c needed for confining an ideal chain with a natural size R(0) between two plates depends on the polymer concentration. It scales as (R(0)/D)(2) in a dilute solution and as R(0)(2)/alpha D in a melt. In the intermediate semi-dilute regime, Delta S-c also depends on the semi-dilute correlation length xi and scales as R(0)(2)/xi D. The dilute and the melt behaviours are correctly recovered in the Limits where the monomer concentration tends towards xi(-3) and alpha(-3), respectively.

Abstract: In the case of cold plasma fluorination we analyzed effects of the main processing conditions (power, exposure time, nature of gas, and number of fluorinated faces) on gasoline permeability of polyethylenes. Optimization of processing conditions gave us a permeability reduction of 30% compared to untreated polyethylene. XPS analysis of fluorinated specimens before permeation experiments shows the PE to be highly fluorinated at the surface with a F/C ratio up to 2. Fluorination appeared to be homogeneous over the disk surface with a concentration depth profile showing a step decline below the extreme surface. However, significant fluorination is achieved only up to a few tens of nanometers (20 to 30). A more interesting effect is the evidence for chain breaking during the process suggests the creation of short chain segments at the surface. These segments would be highly fluorinated but easily leeched out by the diffusing molecules. Leeching seems more important with alcohol containing gasolines. These data show clearly that fluorination by cold plasmas in the conditions under studies has not a permanent effect. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract: The new solid solutions BaMn1-xZnxF4 have been investigated by different experimental methods in the temperature range 10 K-300 K. X-ray and calorimetric measurements show that the incommensurate phase characteristic of BaMnF4 is also observed for x less than or equal to 0.25. Raman spectra were obtained for BaMn0.5Zn0.5F4 and BaMn0.25Zn0.75F4. Two low-frequency, temperature-dependent bands were observed over the whole temperature range investigated. These results are discussed in connection with structural disorder and the presence of precursor effects of an incommensurate phase transition.

Abstract: This is the first report on innervation of the crustacean androgenic gland (AG). This kind of innervation might be typical of species in which the AG and the oviduct have the same origin. The AG of Sphaeroma serration becomes totally functional just before the puberal moult. We suggest that androgenic hormone may be packed in dense granules and released by exocytosis. The negative control of the AG by neurohormones is also discussed.

Abstract: Treatment in alkaline medium of a gamma-bromotrifluoroacetylaminocyclopentane derivative affords a bridged oxazepine whose cleavage led selectively to trans substituted compounds. This anchimeric assistance reaction due to a trifluoroacetylamino group beared by a cyclopentane ring is similar to those observed with the opening of aziridines in homologous structures.

Abstract: Low temperature magnetic properties of (NH4)(2)FeF5 . H2O have been investigated via iron-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and ac susceptibility measurements. The high temperature ac susceptibility data can be fitted to a Curie-Weiss law with C = 4.22 +/- 0.05 emu K mol(-1) and Theta = -3.9 +/- 0.5 K while the fit of the low temperature data to a Heisenberg linear-chain model yields g = 1.97 +/- 0.02 and an intrachain constant J/k(B) = -0.40 +/- 0.02 K. At lower temperatures (NH4)(2)FeF5 . H2O exhibits a crossover to three dimensional magnetic ordering with T-c = 2.2 +/- 0.05 K and 1.61 +/- 0.05 K from Mossbauer spectroscopy and ac susceptibility, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements suggest a first-order structural phase transition centered at T-c = 139 +/- 1 K on heating and T-c = 125 +/- 1 K on cooling for (NH4)(2)FeF5 . H2O. No such transformation is suggested by scanning calorimetry studies of the corresponding K+, Rb+ and Cs+ analogues. The limiting internal hyperfine field, H-n(0 K), is 45 T, indicating some 25% zero point spin reduction consistent with significant 1-d magnetic behavior, All the experiments reported here have been performed following varied and careful thermal treatments. A particularly interesting result is the observation of a persistent rapidly relaxing fraction that the Mossbauer spectra of (NH4)(2)FeF5 . H2O clearly exhibit below T-c but which is not seen in previous studies of the K+, Rh+, and Cs+ compounds. A probable explanation for this is the loss of magnetic equivalence of the Fe3+ sites as a result of the structural phase transition. This behavior further calls into question the still common practice of interpretation of low temperature magnetic phenomena largely on the basis of ambient temperature structure determinations.

Abstract: For an abrupt heterojunction between two otherwise homogeneous semiconductors in one dimension, the effective-mass Hamiltonian

H=-<(h)over bar (2)>/2 m(z)(alpha) alpha(z)(v) d/dz m(z)(beta) alpha(z)(-2v) d/dz m(z)(alpha) alpha(z)(v)+E(c)(z)

is examined with 2 alpha+beta=-1, where m(z), a(z), and E(c)(z), are the position dependent effective mass. the local lattice parameter, and tile local conduction band edge, respectively. Tile exact Schrodinger equation is compared with that for the effective-mass equation in the case of an analytically solvable model. In the asymptotic limit of the energy close to the hand edge, the conclusions obtained are shown to be dependent on tile parity of the bands.

Abstract: We demonstrate the advantage of using the so-called generalized exponential (GEX) function for the analysis of relaxation functions characterized by a monomodal broad relaxation time distribution. We give a number of characteristics of this function and compare it to two functions that are currently widely used for this type of analysis: the Kohlraush-Williams-Watt and the Havriliak-Negami functions. The main advantages of the GEX-function are that it can be used easily both in the time and the frequency domain, and that it has a relatively simple expression for the corresponding relaxation time distribution. Three important applications are discussed: the glass transition dynamics, and the relaxation of concentration fluctuations in dilute and concentrated solutions of broad distributions of selfsimilar particles. In the latter two cases the relation between the parameters of the GEX-function and the molecular characteristics of the solutions is made explicit.

Abstract: The u.v. radiation-induced copolymerization of polyethyleneglycol diacrylate (PEGDA) with 2-hydroxyethyl-oxazolidone acrylate (2-HEOA) in acetonitrile solution and in bulk was investigated. The copolymerization reactivity ratios of each monomer and their Q and Q values were calculated and compared to those obtained under the same conditions with PEGDA and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP). The composition of the resulting copolymers was statistical; however, bulk polymerization of thin films showed that the PEGDA/2-HEOA system had a greater reactivity than the PEGDA/NVP system.

Abstract: Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus, first described in 1988. It is responsible for about 20 cases of infective endocarditis. A new case of infective endocarditis on prosthetic aortic valve is described. Despite its susceptibility to all specific antibiotics tested, its high virulence and capacity to make vegetations should incite valve replacement precociously. Abstract: The discovery of a natural Gerbich antigen (anti-Ge2) in the serum of a propositus prompted us to study his red blood calls (RBCs) by using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) directed against glycophorin (GP) C and GPD. An mAb directed against the Ge4 antigen (mAb NaM10-7G11) agglutinated both untreated and trypsin-treated cells, demonstrating the expression of a trypsin-resistant GPC (namely GPC of the Gerbich type: GPC(Ge)). Surprisingly, an anti-Ge3 antibody (mAb NaM19-3C4) agglutinated untreated cells, showing that they also express the Ge3 antigen that may be carried by normal GPC and CPD or by the abnormal GPC of the Yussef (Yus) type (GPC(Yus)). Immunoblotting analysis performed with an mAb directed against the C-terminal portion of GPC showed that the propositus' RBCs do not contain normal GPC and GPD but both GPC''' and GPC(Yus). Analysis of RBCs from the family demonstrated that. like the propositus, 2 of the 3 sisters had inherited both the GYPC(Ge) and the GYPC(Yus) alleles from the patents, who carried either the GYPC(Ge) or the GYPC(Yus) allele, The third sister had inherited the normal GYPC alleles from her parents, whereas the child of the propositus had inherited the GYPC(Ge) allele. interestingly, natural anti-Ge2 antibodies were identified in the serum of 2 of the 3 Ge-negative individuals.

Abstract: Measurement of parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) associated with that of parathyroid hormone, allows to establish, in most cases, diagnosis of hypercalcemia of malignancy and more exactly of patients with Malignancy Humoral Hypercalcemia (MHH). Because of the variety of molecular forms of PTHrP, linked to its catabolism, its immunoassay remains difficult. After a study evaluating the methodological reliability, we measured the contribution of PTHrP to the hypercalcemia by 2 assays : a N-terminal RIA and a 1-72 IRMA in samples from 47 control subjects, 10 patients with chronic renal failure (IRC), 13 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT), and 48 patients with solid tumors classified by their level of calcemia: 48 normocalcemia and 23 hypercalcemia. We noted a strong correlation (r = 0,92) between the two assays. They do not show increases in renal insufficiency; they have a good diagnostic discrimination between HPT, normal subjects and patients with MHH. Elevated levels of PTHrP are similar in both assays. Howewer, IRMA appears to be more sensitive and more practical than RIA. Moreover, it shows the best correlation between serum calcium and phosporus in patients with MHH.

Abstract: The new oxomercurate BaHgRuO5 is synthesized under high oxygen pressure. Refinements of 34 parameters by the Rietveld method using 541 reflections lead to R(Bragg) = 0.040 and R(p) = 0.096. The structure is built up from RuO5 trigonal bipyramid groups sharing the two apical oxygen atoms exclusively with dumb-bell-like HgO2 groups. Three of each of these groups form isolated [OHgO(RuO3)](3) rings between which are inserted the barium atoms either in tricapped trigonal prisms or icosahedron, both distorted. A relationship with the Ba[RuO3(OH)(2)] structure is evidenced and discussed. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
