Well I guess I am sympathetic to both views. I just passed through
a week of off-line in Japan and found 101 messages when I got back. Happily
more than half were University shit that I could simply delete but I am
beginning to get concerned about the number messages that need a reply (I
am also delighted with the corresponding number of letters that no longer
need to be written). I think that on the whole I prefer extra junk in my
in-box, that can be deleted, than info that passed me by. On the other
hand a general response telling someone about a public domain program in my
FTP library did, on one occasion in the recent past, got interpreted as
some kind of advertising and resulted in flames and counter-flames.
(Hugo...welcome to internet lingo - hope your old retired bones can
translate!).
I guess that anyone with a special address just for Federal Express
(to the tune of: Building SM-30, Bikini Atoll Rd - reminding us of the good
old days when the US competed with France in vaporizing Pacific islands)
should be listened to! I'm with Dave - give me more junk to rapidly delete
from my in-box.
