[sdpd] SR1 applications for Micro Single Crystal Diffraction Beamline 9.8 station at the Daresbury Synchrotron, Cheshire, UK.

(As a powder can be a collection of small micro-crystals suitable
for being solved by synchrotron based single crystal hardware, am
also posting this here - Lachlan).

SR1 applications for Micro Single Crystal Diffraction Beamline 9.8 station
at the Daresbury Synchrotron, Cheshire, UK.

Originally from Simon Teat, station manager of Beamline 9.8 at
Daresbury. Of possible interest to UK academics (EPSRC, NERC and
BBSRC grant holders) and academics in EU countries involved in the
EU Framework 5 contract.

9.8 is a microcrystalline diffraction synchrotron beamline
for routine small and large molecule single crystal structure
solution and refinement, charge density data collection, etc
incorporating a Bruker SMART CCD system as per information
given at:

SR1 Direct Access Applications:

The closing date for SR1 applications is November 10th. SR1 applications
(Direct Access) are for new users (someone who has never been a principal
investigator at the SRS before) , time needed for an urgent study, an
exploratory study or to complete a student's research programme & training.
In applications for student training you should make a good case for the
training as well as the science case. Any evidence that shows the crystals
either too small to diffract or the data is too poor for a good refinement
on a lab instrument will aid your application.
EPSRC have added a new category to direct access for academics who hold a
fast stream grant or an advanced fellowship. It is a "grant-linked" direct
access scheme.
EPSRC's aim is to allow researchers establishing their independent research
career access to facilities to continue their programme whilst developing
full research proposals to EPSRC for tickets.

For BBSRC & NERC SR1 applications the closing date is, also, 10th November.

The closing date for SR2 applications is December 8th. SR2 applications are
for those who already have tickets awarded on an EPSRC grant and wish to
turn them into beamtime.

More information can be obtained from the following webpage:-

http://www.srs.dl.ac.uk/ulo/forms_reports.html

If holding an EPSRC grant for synthetic chemistry, which would
benefit from station 9.8 time and did not include funding for
tickets, you can apply to the EPSRC to have tickets added simply by
writing a letter rather than a full grant application. If you or your
colleagues are interested in doing this I would urge you contact the EPSRC
chemistry programme manager for more details or by going to the following
web address:-
