The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory <br>
(ORNL) invites applications for a Powder Diffraction Group <br>
Leader.  With the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron <br>
source for condensed matter research (the High Flux Isotope Reactor) <br>
and the world's most intense pulsed, accelerator-<wbr>based neutron source <br>
(the Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL is becoming the world's <br>
foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities <br>
encompasses the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and <br>
medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2000 <br>
researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and <br>

PURPOSE:<br>
The Powder Diffraction Group Leader is responsible for ensuring the <br>
efficient operation and availability of the neutron scattering <br>
instruments in the group and for developing the instruments in the <br>
group to meet the changing scientific needs of the neutron scattering <br>
community.<br>
<br>
ROLE:<br>
Ensures the efficient and safe operation and continued availability <br>
of neutron scattering instruments in the Powder <br>
Diffraction.  Organizes and leads efforts to continue development of <br>
instruments in the group to meet the changing scientific needs of the <br>
neutron scattering community. The Group Leader encourages the <br>
development of the scientific programs of those scientists in the <br>
group, seeking opportunities for establishing collaborations within <br>
and outside the group and participation in ORNL and external funding <br>
initiatives.<br>
<br>
QUALIFICATIONS:<br>
The successful candidate should have an excellent track record, <br>
typically achieved after post doc attainment, with a minimum of 10 <br>
years of experience. An international reputation in the use of <br>
diffraction techniques in neutron and/or synchrotron facilities is <br>
highly desired. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated <br>
experience in leading a research team. The candidate must be willing <br>
to work in a team environment on technically and scientifically <br>
challenging problems.<br>
