Excellent idea Lachlan. Perhaps you might also summarise how people
connect to and use newsgroups. As you know, it is just as easy and
automatic as email, with the advantage that you don't actually download
until you decide to read the article. For this reason usenet news is more
convenient than email if you access from home using telephone lines as I
often do.

The main advantage of usenet is that it should encourage people to discuss
more openly (without worrying about the volume of email), which was the
point of the original post, with which most people agree.

Anyway, I see this topic stimulated more discussion than I have seen on
this mail list for some time ;-)
