Of course, there is an active scientific software group at ESRF developing
data-analysis methods and programs for the ESRF, its users, and outside.
But we have around 30 public and 10 CRG beam lines which cover a wide range
of science. Powder diffraction is only a fraction of this. In the ESRF
powder-diffraction team, with the resources we have, we put our efforts
into trying to provide the best powder-diffraction data rather than
developing software.

We are not dependent on Accelrys. We have the same access to all the
public-domain software (e.g. via CCP14) that anyone else has, and we make
extensive use of public-domain programs. We also have commercial software,
from Accelrys and other suppliers, including data-analysis programs and
databases, and these allow us greater flexibility to choose the tool best
suited to solve the problem. This means that staff and users of ESRF can
optimise their chances of successfully extracting the required information
from the data.

Such as?

ESRF staff and ESRF users have access. Put in your proposal Armel and you
can use them too.
Or spend your next sabbatical leave here as a visitor.

I'll be looking forward to using it. As we all know, there is no technique
that works universally; every new approach helps.
